Common Questions and Answers about Famvir zoster

famvir

Avatar m tn Been tested and results are positive for HSV. Also getting zoster herpes. Taking FAMVIR 125 mg x 2 and/or zovirax (400mg x 2) every day as preventative but it is not working. Why is this not working anymore? What could be triggering this? Could I have another sickness causing this? I am getting desperate now. Doctors are just telllng me to take zovirax and disbelieve me. I will go and see a specialist again but is there anything that can be done except for taking these drugs?
Avatar n tn Started approx. 3 yrs. ago with quarter sized itchy rash with blisters at bottom of spine. It reocurrs approx. once a month--with pain going to hip and down the leg, with numbness and tingling in foot. One dr. took blood test & advised it was zoster; a dermatologist took a skin sample (after rash had dried up) and said it was simplex. I'm now having a endoscopy to test for celiac disease. The celiac panelI had for that showed elevation, but not conclusive.
Avatar m tn 4gms/day (from Pentasa 4gms/day) one month ago. I was started on Famvir today-500mg tid. I am leaving for Hawaii on Wednesday and am scheduled to swim with the dolphins on Thursday. I have completed my first full day's dose of medicine and will continue until the prescription is completed. I am then staying on a maintenance dose of 250mg/day until I can get the vaccine in 6mos at age 60. My question is if it is safe for me to go ahead with my scheduled dolphin swim.
Avatar m tn I have had two outbreaks of Shingles, herpes zoster. My first was when I was in my early 20s and was on my stomach and back on my right side. The second case was last year, age 42, and was on my shoulder, neck, and face right side. This was very uncomfortable and lasted for about 6 months. I did some research and found out about the immunization, zostavax, for shingles. My question - 1) The handbook said zostavax is for people over age 60.
Avatar m tn She told me that they were due to herpes. She referred to them as herpes zoster?? She prescribed me famvir and zithomax. I am seriously freaking out right now. I have had a horrible three years worrying about std's and thought i was finally done with that part of my life. I thought since i had taken the tests and they came back negative I would be fine??? Should I have gotten them to swab it and test it that way? Do I have throat herpes? Please help....
Avatar n tn I think I detect a cluster of blisters at the top of the photo. That would make shingles (zoster) possible or possibly herpes simplex, regular herpes, though that is less likely. I think you should see a doctor right away. This is not because shingles or herpes is very serious, but because you need to know what this is so you can be treated for it, and so you'll know whether you're contagious. Go tomorrow. Take care. Dr.
572909 tn?1218268531 First you should be on an oral antiviral such as acyclovir, famvir or valcef. Second it would be very unlikely that you would have Herpes Zoster on two different places like you back and eye. You should consider leaving your contacts out and just wearing your glasses until the shingles has dried up and gone away.
6562593 tn?1391182775 I still kept getting the outbreaks so I went to a Infectious disease doctor and he prescribed Famvir 500mg 2 x a day while I had a break out and 500 mg every day for the rest of my life! It has helped some but I still get some break outs. Does this virus stay with you forever? I am so confused.
Avatar n tn This time, the doctor told me that he has NOW found some scars on my cornea and that is definitely not due to zoster virus, and Shingles had nothing to do with it since they had already checked my cornea earlier when the virus was active. I was also being asked to start wearing glasses if my blurriness became bothersome. And was giving those OTC “blink” tear drops again, saying that this is temporary blurriness due to dry eyes.
Avatar f tn If it was a canker sore, why did it react to the Famvir? Does Famvir still have an effect on canker sores then, as well as cold sores? Am I contagious? Was I ever contagious? And can I actually kiss my husband again? Thanks for any advice! Much appreciated.
Avatar m tn Did you tested for HHV 6 ?? It is know to cause neuropathic symtoms. Hope you feel better soon.
Avatar n tn My doctor said its very unusual to have outbreaks all the time on medication. She has prescribed Famvir for me now. Can you tell me if this is normal?
Avatar n tn Abcess in tooth was discoved and removed and tooth crowned. At same time began course of Famvir 250mg daily as titers of HSV1 and coxsaccie still very high. This seemed to help for a few months. Pain was definitely better although left side of face served by facial nerve feels "tight". Concern is that I began in November to have flareups of small herpetic vesicles around mouth, on tip of nose. For one month( Feb) I have had sore throat due to cancker type sores in throat.
Avatar m tn You can have a PCR from scrapings to determine if this is zoster. From what ive read breakouts do have a distinctive stripe pattern that can be visually diagnosed but testing is the best determination.
Avatar m tn In the following years (2007-2009) i have only had 3-4 outbreaks. when i get an outbreak i use famvir, 2 tablets at first then 1 every 12 hours for 3 doses. these always worked quickly and the outbreaks were never severe and didn't last longer than a week or so start to finish. In the last 2 weeks (jan 2010) i had a small outbreak that i immediately took my usual dose of famvir for and it cleared up, almost totally within 5-7 days.
Avatar n tn are u sure it is zoster? It is unusual to get zoster every month, especially if u r taking valtrex, Are u immunosuppressed eg taking steroids, chemotherapy or are u very run down?
Avatar f tn I hope someone can help. I've had horrible recurring pain in my right eye for over a year. Went to Optho. multiple times and was told it was an infected oil gland. I was put on low dose antibiotics for over 6 months and told to apply warm compresses and scrub eye with a baby shampoo/water solution. I developed a rash on my buttocks months into this that my GP diagnosed as shingles and prescribed Famvir.
Avatar m tn have been now 5 months outbreak free (leading a really healthy lifestyle). My doctor prescribed me for my outbreaks famvir, 125 mg twice a day during 5 days. I have a girlfriend and we have talked about this and both of us would like to make sex without condoms. We have sex each 2/3 weeks. I wouldnt like to take suppresive therapy daily, if we are having sex each 2 / 3 weeks (wich is very little). Taking this in mind what would be considered an effective suppresive therapy?
Avatar m tn It should've been 2 500mg famvir tablets to take 2x/day for 1 day. Is that what you were given or just 1 500mg pill?
