Famvir versus valtrex

Common Questions and Answers about Famvir versus valtrex

famvir

Avatar n tn no famvir isn't stronger than valtrex. they both work about the same, you just have to take famvir more often to get the same results as you do with valtrex. Your spouse having herpes isn't going to trigger ob's in you. You will still get ob's even while on suppressive therapy, you just get less of them.
Avatar n tn i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.
Avatar n tn I dont get headaches from the valtrex. I get lack of appetite though! You can take l-lysine! Its sorta the same thing as valtrex but with out all the side effects. Some say it works some say it dont work.
Avatar m tn Well valtrex is generic now everywhere so it shouldn't be a money issue for most folks if they have decent prescription coverage with their insurance. Acyclovir is still way cheaper but if you have insurance coverage that makes generics low cost, valtrex is, as of this month, going to be WAY cheaper for you now :) the technicality to the answer to your question is this - only valtrex has been studied for reduction in transmission to a partner.
Avatar f tn Since being diagnosed two years ago, I still get an outbreak every two months. I only use valtrex when i have an outbreak (twice a day for 5 days), but my doctor says that even so my outbreaks should get less frequent over time. Anyone else have this problem?
Avatar f tn I was on valtrex for awhile and my hair was thinning so now I am on Famvir I was wondering if anyone has noticed hair loss with this drug? And is hair loss common with antivirals?
Avatar f tn I do. I have for years but have never had this problem. Possibly I'm just more sensitive with the HSV? They called in Famvir for me to start but I think I might take a medication vacation for a few days. If I start showing sx of an outbreak, I'll go get the Famvir. I've read that Famvir isn't as effective at suppressing viral shedding as Valtrex. I'm not in a relationship right now, so that's not a pressing issue, I just like being informed.
Avatar n tn Has anyone ever had an outbreak worsen or have more intense outbreaks while on Valtrex? Just wondering. Thanks.
Avatar n tn I have the same problem. Now I take Cymbalta to ease the tingling, it works like the commercial says! And Valtrex didn't work for me so I take Famvir. Get some Zovirex ointment to apply to that area too. Good Luck, I feel for you!
Avatar f tn Is hair loss a side effect of Valacyclovir/Valtrex when taken for suppressive therapy?
Avatar f tn Is it possible for a person to become resistant to the antiviral meds, like valtrex and famvir? Like could it have previously worked and no longer does?
Avatar f tn you might want to switch from famvir to valtrex - probably the 1gm daily dose or even the 500mg 2x/day dose and see if that works better for you. are you on steroids for your cf?
Avatar n tn You have to take it twice a day, but it may not have the same effects as Valtrex does. There is also Famvir that you could try. Talk to your doctor about it.
Avatar f tn Call your provider and ask them to phone in a prescription for the cold sore doses of one of the herpes antivirals. Famvir and valtrex both have 1 day cold sore doses.
Avatar m tn thank u and i have one more question i have the clear and white bumps on my hands i know they are not herpes i just wondering if u had any idea what they are
Avatar f tn After 10 days on valtrex I switched to suppressive dose of famvir. While on famvir I had some occasional pain and redness. I told my GCP and urologist about my response to valtrex and each said that was unusual. I took another blood test at 9 and 11 weeks and still negative. So my GCP and urologist convinced med to stop taking famvir.
Avatar f tn I've had hsv 2 for 7 years and have started suppression therapy on Valtrex for 6 months to prevent transmission to a new partner. It seems like i have way more outbreaks taking valtrex daily compared to in the past where i would take it just for an outbreak i would get maybe once a year. Has anyone else reported this? Should i stop taking it daily?
Avatar f tn now I read that this seems to be more common aide effect than manufacture is aware of. Have read that valtrex also has the same side effect. how about Famvir? This is soo depressing and is the hair loss permanent?
Avatar m tn are you taking valtrex or acyclovir? Are you taking acyclovir 400mg 2x/day or just 800mg once a day?
Avatar f tn I have read in various places that Valtrex is the only suppressive medication that has been proven in clinical trials to reduce transmission. I am under the impression, however, that this is simply because Valtrex is the only drug that has been tested for reduction in transmission. My question is....since Acyclovir also suppresses the HSV-2 virus, is it likely that it will also reduce the risk of transmission? Or, is Valtrex a more effective drug and should I consider switching to that?
Avatar m tn Like most I cannot afford Valtrex any more. I have switched to Acyclovir. I've used it effectively for the couple of outbreaks but it seems to be taking considerably longer. I am taking L-Lysene as a suppressor and only take the Acyclovir at the first sign of an outbreak. I was taking 1000mg Valtrex at onset and then 500mg twice a day and everything was clear in 3 days. To get the same effectiveness from Acyclovir how much should I be taking daily during out breaks?
Avatar f tn I'm on famvir for suppression, I had a cultural swab done a year ago at a clinic, I pretty well knew I had contracted the virus because the initial outbreak was crucial. The babies father knows of me having it, and got tested his hsv1 and 2 have came back negative.
