Avatar f tn I hope someone can help. I've had horrible recurring pain in my right eye for over a year. Went to Optho. multiple times and was told it was an infected oil gland. I was put on low dose antibiotics for over 6 months and told to apply warm compresses and scrub eye with a baby shampoo/water solution. I developed a rash on my buttocks months into this that my GP diagnosed as shingles and prescribed Famvir.
Avatar f tn I have Multiple Myeloma (similar rare cancer) as part of my treatment I was taking Famvir to both prevent herpes outbreaks, and also shingles. He may be already on an anti viral, it's part of the cocktail of meds given in support of chemo.

Avatar n tn Antiviral prescription medications such as FAMVIR® (famciclovir) can help reduce your symptoms and help shingles blisters heal faster. However, the medication should be started within 72 hours (3 days) after the rash of shingles appears, so it is important to see your doctor right away. Without treatment, the symptoms of shingles (eg, rash, blisters, and pain) usually go away in about 3 to 5 weeks.
Avatar n tn I had shingles, and it is extremely painful. I do not think burning at the penis is typical for shingles. I had shingles across my torso, and it was the most painful feeling I have ever endured. (I had the pain in my side several days before the lesions appeared) I went to the doctor immediately after seeing lesions (only 2 or three popped up) He gave me famvir which haulted them in their tracks, and they went away a week or so later never to return Thank GOD!
Avatar n tn Advised to take two 250 mg. Famvir every day now--it makes me nauseas. The last rash moved from the lower spine area (the quarter sized) to a larger rash in the periformus area--moving closer to the hip. Rash starts as a lump, then breaks out into the blisters. How can I find out for sure if it's zoster, simplex, herpetiformis--do I go to a dermatologist to do a test with the tissue sample, or is there a definitive blood test?
Avatar n tn You were right Doc. I went to the doctor today and he said it was Shingles. He prescribed 500mg Famvir 3x a day for 7 days. That sound reasonable? Thanks so much for your help.
Avatar f tn I'm not sure why you are either, and you're on the highest dose possible of Valtrex. It an be rough at first, but if you've already tested positive on a blood test, that means your body has made antibodies already, and that should help calm things down (obviously, that isn't happening). There is another antiviral, Famvir. It's more expensive, and it's usually used more for shingles than hsv, but it's worth a try. Maybe you'll respond better to that.
Avatar n tn I HAVE HAD TWO NERVE DECOMPRESSIONS ON THE L5-S1 LEVEL, AFTER MY SECOND OPERATION IN 2007, WHICH WAS PERFORMED AFTER A PEACE OF BONE CAME OUT OF THE INJURED DISC AND LODGED ITSELF THROUGH A MAIN NERVE, I HAVE BEEN GETTING ON GOING OUTBRAKES OF SHINGLES. MY SECONDSURGERY WAS NOT AS SUCESSFULL AS THE FIRST, AND I HAVE HAD ONGOING PROBLEMS AND HIGH PAIN LEVELS.
Avatar m tn Have you discussed the option of getting the shingles vaccine? Even if you have had shingles, it can help prevent future outbreaks.
572909 tn?1218268531 My question is about shingles and the eye. I have shingles on my middle left back. The Blisters have appeared ,a nd they are very itchy. 6562593 tn?1391182775 I still kept getting the outbreaks so I went to a Infectious disease doctor and he prescribed Famvir 500mg 2 x a day while I had a break out and 500 mg every day for the rest of my life! It has helped some but I still get some break outs. Does this virus stay with you forever? I am so confused.
651674 tn?1224452312 For cold sores the famvir dose is 1500 mg once as soon as you notice the start of a cold sore. All the herpes antivirals only help to speed the healing of a cold sore by a few days on average but it shortens the duration of shedding as well in many folks if you take it soon enough, can even ward off a full blown cold sore. Probably you are fighting off another viral infection that triggered the cold sore from the sounds of things.
Avatar m tn I have had two outbreaks of Shingles, herpes zoster. My first was when I was in my early 20s and was on my stomach and back on my right side. The second case was last year, age 42, and was on my shoulder, neck, and face right side. This was very uncomfortable and lasted for about 6 months. I did some research and found out about the immunization, zostavax, for shingles. My question - 1) The handbook said zostavax is for people over age 60.
Avatar n tn How long have you been taking the valtrex? What dose are you taking? Headaches are a normal side effect of the herpes antivirals but they typically will go away in a week or two. What mad eyou start suppressive therapy? You might want to consider switching to acyclovir or famvir instead and see if you do better on either of those. You can even start off at a low, subtheraputic dose and gradually increase your dose over the course of 2-3 weeks and see if you tolerate that better too.
Avatar m tn In the last 2 weeks (jan 2010) i had a small outbreak that i immediately took my usual dose of famvir for and it cleared up, almost totally within 5-7 days. that period was from friday 15th jan until the following weekend. however today, 24th jan, a week since my last outbreak, the herpes has come back in exactly the same place and same symptoms as last week! this has never happened before with only 3-4 outbreaks in 3 years, and now 2 in less than 2 weeks! how can this happen?!
Avatar f tn you might want to switch from famvir to valtrex - probably the 1gm daily dose or even the 500mg 2x/day dose and see if that works better for you. are you on steroids for your cf?
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed of Shingles. The virus was around my right eye, on my eyelids, forehead and scalps. 2/17/10: Knowing the seriousness of this virus and being concerned about my vision, I immediately went to see an Ophthamologist. According to him fortunately, there was no infection in my eye yet. My vision was 20/20, eye pressure was normal and the cornea looked good as well. 2/24/10: I visited the doctor again, and everything was fine too.
Avatar n tn I just remember vaguely that nerves are where the shingles are, and it can goof them up. If your shingles goes away and you've tried various means of getting your digestion going, but it's still a problem, I agree with the poster Mammo about going to the ER, or go to a Gastoenterologist, or possibly even a Neurologist if it comes down to nobody having any answers, in case that paralysis thing with the shingles would affect your digestion.
Avatar f tn ( your provider is once again prescribing you the wrong dose of famvir too. It is 1gm twice a day for 1 day to treat herpes recurrences. They are prescribing you the shingles doses which aren't needed for genital herpes. There is no benefit to treating for 7 days - most recurrences are almost healed on their own during that time. side effects are the same with all herpes antivirals actually - they aren't higher with acyclovir.
Avatar n tn Is it possible to get outbreaks while on treatment? After the initial outbreak which was treated with single-dose famvir, I had no symptoms for 3 weeks except sore throat/adenopathy. My doctor gave me acyclovir 250mg 3x a day, 7 days to see if it would treat the adenopathy and after a few days on it i had an outbreak. He said that was almost impossible to have an outbreak on a treatment dose.
Avatar m tn I've had chronic Epstein-Barr Virus(mono) for 30yrs---but last 10yrs on FAMVIR which is an anti-viral formulated Specifically FOR both shingles and EBV.
