famvir dosage for herpes

I was not comfortable with the dr so i went to see another one, he prescribed me famvir and told me to come back in 6 weeks for testing for herpes, though he saw nothing he could culture or anything indicative of herpes. The famvir relieved my symptoms though every time i go off it i get about 5 days of relief before symptoms start to come back. I also have had general (and painful) adenopathy since early feb. but dr dismissed it as no big deal.

how long did you take the famvir for? are you sure that you haven't done anything else along with taking famivir that could have helped the symptoms? simply from being at rest for example. there are some new strains of Influenza virus that can trigger immunological problems and weaken the muscles and spinal cord. do you have any other symptoms?

t know what herpes expert you are talking about, but starting Famvir at day 14 after contact would have absolutely no impact on contracting herpes. If you had come in direct contact with herpes and had taken the Famvir within an hour or two for several days, then maybe, yes. Yes, a western blot at 16 weeks would be conclusive but will likely not be different than results now. The western blot picks up more HSV 1 than the ELISA does.

t know if it is all in my head, because I just tested postive for this, and I have been dealing with this for about 15 yrs. I am still shocked. I have been to several doctors who blew it off as a yeast infection. Does anyone know of any alternatives that work?

BTW, my blood test was 10.5 for the IgG test, for HSV2, which my PA says is high. I am continuing to take Famvir 500 mg 2X per day.

In the following years (2007-2009) i have only had 3-4 outbreaks. when i get an outbreak i use famvir, 2 tablets at first then 1 every 12 hours for 3 doses. these always worked quickly and the outbreaks were never severe and didn't last longer than a week or so start to finish. In the last 2 weeks (jan 2010) i had a small outbreak that i immediately took my usual dose of famvir for and it cleared up, almost totally within 5-7 days.

My doctor said its very unusual to have outbreaks all the time on medication. She has prescribed Famvir for me now. Can you tell me if this is normal?

My advice is for you to speak with your health care provider(s) about this, and discuss whther to stop taking the Famvir. The main reason for suppressive treatment of genital herpes is to prevent transmission to people who are not yet infected; or to preven frequent outbreaks. If either of you starts having frequent outbreaks after the drug is stopped, he or she can restart it. But it definitely isn't needed to prevent transmission to each other.

For cold sores the famvir dose is 1500 mg once as soon as you notice the start of a cold sore. All the herpes antivirals only help to speed the healing of a cold sore by a few days on average but it shortens the duration of shedding as well in many folks if you take it soon enough, can even ward off a full blown cold sore. Probably you are fighting off another viral infection that triggered the cold sore from the sounds of things.

acyclovir needs to be taken 2x/day to effectively suppress hsv2. All 3 herpes antivirals suppress hsv2 about the same amount except for famvir doesn't work as well in folks who are asymptomatic in their infections. the herpes handbook is free to read online and has info on all 3 antivirals.

It should've been 2 500mg famvir tablets to take 2x/day for 1 day. Is that what you were given or just 1 500mg pill?

Also my doctor prescribed famvir but I don't have genital herpes. Can Famvir help with penis pain?

i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.

Definitely the next step is getting your man tested for herpes. He'll need a type specific herpes igg blood test for hsv1 and hsv2. Once you know his status then you can better decide what precautions to take together ( if any ). Just to err on the side of caution - I'd call the clinic and ask them if they can mail you a copy of your herpes lesion culture results. The other option is to ask for a clinic nurse there to go over it with you.

The recommended dosage from Terri Warren for famir is 1000mg orally twice a day for one day for recurrent outbreaks and for suppression would be 250mg twice a day every day. Usually the first outbreaks are the worst. You might want to have a blood test just to confirm.

What sort of work up have you been thru? Have you been evaluated for a fungal infection at all or treated for one during this time?

Hi I have had herpes for the past 6 years and me and my boyfriend are trying to have a baby but we ALWAYS have sex with a condom because I do not want him to get herpes.

no reason to think your throat symptoms are hpv either. very unlikely a std is the cause of your throat symptoms. I'd see an ENT specialist if it's not better in a week on the antibiotics. Honestly I wouldn't even bother continuing with the famvir. herpes symptoms wouldn't last "for awhile now".

After that, you could go right into the suppression dose, which is 250 mg twice a day. That said, I wonder if this is all herpes. You wouldn't get herpes on your torso.

Do you have a copy of your swab test results that you can look at? Have you had any blood testing at all for herpes? Could you get a copy of results of the most recent swab from your mouth and post me here exactly what the test print out says?

I went to my PCP today and he said the rash was not herpes. He did a IgG and IgM blood test for herpes anyways to see if that was causing my sharp pains. He knows I have type 1. He felt, like you, it would be against odds to get type 2 using a condom, but did say he sees it. Condoms don't cover the whole genital area and I did get her fluids on me and did touch my genital area to her's some. He also wondered about the Famvir helping prevent a new HSV infection?
