My phys assistant says herpes over the phone, told me to increase famvir and use an acyclovir cream. I am still waiting to see if there is a result.

In your first sentence are you referring to a supressive regiment of 2x/day every day? and at 200 or 400mg per dose? I don't have many obs as it is so I've never really done supressive theropy. I've had good results with Valtrex but as I said it's unaffordable now so I'm adjusting to Acyclovir. Thanks for your help and input.

We assume the other 2 antivirals, acyclovir and famvir , have similar results. anything you do that reduces shedding of the virus reduces the amount of times a partner is likely to come into contact with active herpes and all 3 herpes antivirals reduce shedding similarly.

i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.

Ask your provider for a prescription for oral acyclovir, famvir or valtrex in the cold sore doses and use an otc pain relief topical instead if the cold sore hurts. Even cheaper yet, hold an ice cube to the cold sore !

I'm on famvir for suppression, I had a cultural swab done a year ago at a clinic, I pretty well knew I had contracted the virus because the initial outbreak was crucial. The babies father knows of me having it, and got tested his hsv1 and 2 have came back negative.

It also only has to be taken once a day which is a bonus for suppressive therapy long term. Both acyclovir and famvir need to be taken twice daily for suppressive therapy ( acyclovir is 3x/day for ob's and famvir is still 2x/day for ob's ). Acyclovir is the cheapest choice.

The NEW Doctor tells me that the only difference between taking Valtrex (what I have been taking) to Acyclovir (What they now want to prescribe) is the number of times a day you take it. I looked online...they say that Valtrex does a better job of helping you not to transmit the virus (most of this information provided by GlaxoSmithKline of course). The supression study has them identical. I am in a relationship where I really enjoy our "personal time".

Even though valtrex is an acyclovir prodrug ( the body converts it to acyclovir), you get less active acyclovir in the actual acyclovir pill which is why you take it more often. Some folks do have pain from valtrex and getting less acyclovir in the actual acyclovir pill controls your herpes without causing you as many side effects.

What mad eyou start suppressive therapy? You might want to consider switching to acyclovir or famvir instead and see if you do better on either of those. You can even start off at a low, subtheraputic dose and gradually increase your dose over the course of 2-3 weeks and see if you tolerate that better too.

Have been on acyclovir for a couple of years and my hair has gotten extremely thin on the sides and top. So depressing as this works for suppression. now I read that this seems to be more common aide effect than manufacture is aware of. Have read that valtrex also has the same side effect. how about Famvir? This is soo depressing and is the hair loss permanent?

t really know but it does happen ( nothing officially listed on the prescribing info about this - just things folks have mentioned over the years on the various boards ). You can try switching to acyclovir or famvir and see if you have less issues with them if you don't have a vaginitis going on causing increased ob's. also if you are using any of the "heated" or "his and hers" lubes , might want to stop those too.

If valtrex is too pricey for you on your insurance - look into famvir or acyclovir - both are available as a cheaper generic and is usually more affordable with insurances. give the doc a call and ask for a prescription for herpes antivirals to keep on hand for future cold sores. she can use either 1 day famvir, 1 day valtrex or 2 day acyclovir to treat cold sores. acyclovir is the cheapest option - 800mg 3x/day for 2 days.

It causes me endless vertigo and jaw swelling. I have been on Famvir for 34 days - which does alleviate the symptoms a little - but the virius is still active. It takes monts for it to go into remmission. Since HSV1 and 2 are similair, my question is does anyone have any insight as to why it does not go into remmission within the standard 2 weeks??? I'm not HIV nor do I have Lyme disease and I canot take acyclovir. I cannot exist like this anymore. Thanks.
