Famciclovir medication

Common Questions and Answers about Famciclovir medication

famvir

Avatar m tn When I started prophylactic treatment with acyclovir, I saw a reduced occurrence for a few months, then they came back to about 4-5 outbreaks/year. I recently switched prophylactic medication from acyclovir to famciclovir, and had a 18-month period free from outbreak. Come yesterday, I had another terrible outbreak (worse than usual)... will these become more commonplace now? Is this a sign of HSV-resistance to the drug? Are there any other courses of action I can consider?
Avatar m tn m not a doctor but I have no idea why you would need prescription medication in this case (Famciclovir) when you are not experiencing a herpes outbreak.

Avatar m tn There are 3 antivirals (oral medication) generally prescribed for treating HSV. These are Valtrex/valacyclovir, Famvir/famciclovir, and acyclovir. They require a doctor's prescription. There are also several topicals that you can get over the counter. Some of these are Abreva, Releev, and Dermoplast. In addition some people use natural remedies such as honey, which has been found to have antiviral properties.
Avatar m tn they won't work if you don't take them. in your post to Terri, you wrote that they gave you valtrex. which medication are you taking? if your diarrhea was from the medication, it's not likely to continue. there was no reason to stop taking whichever medication it was you had started taking.
Avatar m tn Hello and hope you are doing well. Herpes infection is of two types, Herpes simplex type I & II . The virus can lie dormant and can get reactivated at intervals producing symptoms. Hence there is no permanent cure. But anti-viral medications like acyclovir, valacyclovir and famciclovir are known to shorten out breaks and improve symptoms. It depends on one’s immunity also. If it is good the person may have less number of reactivations.
Avatar m tn Several studies in humans and mice provide evidence that treatment with the antiviral drug Famciclovir soon after the first infection with herpes can significantly lower the chance of future symptomatic outbreaks of herpes. Use of Famciclovir in this manner has been shown to reduce the amount of latent herpes virus in the neural ganglia.[5][6][7] A review of human subjects treated for five days with Famciclovir 250 mg three times daily during their first herpes episode found that only 4.
Avatar f tn A week after contact I started experiencing numbness and an odd sensation on my fingertip. I immediately started famciclovir the next day (8 days post potential exposure) My finger still feels numb/ slightly cold/ very mildly swollen with red spots and hyperaensitivity at the tip (havent been touching anything with that finger) which is 1.5 weeks. Avatar m tn We stopped talking after awhile and until recently she invited to her place with some friends, while using her bathroom I saw she had a priscription bottle for famciclovir in her medicine cabinet. I looked it up on my phone and saw that this is medication for genital herpes. I am now freaking out because i performed oral and had unprotected sex. I'm also scared of HIV since she lied when I asked her if she had anything. I have felt some periodic burning in my groin and the tip of my penis.
Avatar n tn So to be sure, he did a swab test that came back negative. He prescribed me famciclovir. After 3 weeks, the lesions were still there but smaller. So I went back at the clinic to see the same doctor. He made another swab test and the result was still negative (but I had take famciclovir 1 or 2 weeks before). The doctor didn't give me something else. He told me to take famciclovir for a second time. In total, lesions lasted for almost 4 weeks. No crust at anytime was formed.
Avatar m tn I've asked that your post be transferred to Dr. Handsfield's board. I'm sure this will be taken care of soon.

Avatar f tn I have had oral sex with my partner who has Genital Herpes 2 and I thought we did everything 'right' in preventing it being passed on to me. He hasn't had it for some time. I now have burning when going to the toilet, incredibly itchy skin and a few 'sore'. My doctor has taken a swab and is getting tested and gave my the 3 day internal canisten cream and i'm on tablets...Famciclovir 250mg twice a day. I've tried Vagisal....no go. I've tried Eylocaine Jelly...
Avatar m tn Just 1 week before sexual exposure, I had finished taking Famciclovir 250mg for HSV-1 outbreak. And it cured. After 123 days(4 months) from last risky sexual exposure and 130 days from FAMCICLOVIR completion, I took HSV2(IGM and IGG) test and it turned out negative. I did not got any symptoms on genital area. Can I consider this as confirmatory for HSV-2 in my body? Should I need to go for more test? if so when to take the test? It is 4 months now completed from risk.
Avatar m tn I've had HSV-1 since my college days. 15-20 years or so. I get outbreaks on and near my lips every few months, but after going on antivirals (Famciclovir 250 mg 2x/day) it's been lessened. My first question, being: if I have had the virus for this long, is there still a chance of me cross-contaminating myself with my own infection to other parts of MY body? (e.g., it's on lips to moving to my eyes, or hands, etc.
Avatar m tn Over the next few hours the entire area was burning worse and was extremely uncomfortable. I went and saw a doctor at 72 hours that prescribed me famciclovir for 5 days without doing any testing whatsoever. i got the prescription the next day. It was then i noticed the groin folds rash extended onto both inner thighs with a small group of red dots. I began the medication and the rash was gone the next morning. The symptoms all died down over the next week.
