I was effexor xr 150 mg for 9 years, thought it was not working anymore, so asked the doctor to switch meds, I have been on a roller coaster every since. I have tried wellbutrin(too much anixety), Zoloft(again to much anixety) and now I am on paxil, started at 20 mg but still have aniexty so the doctor said I should go up to 40mg paxil now I am all space out but no aniexty.
I can't imagine just stopping an SSRI without weening off of it. I am NOT a fan of them (even tho I still take 75mg of Effexor XR but every time I even look at a dr they want to push it up up up). I was placed on Paxil when I was 9 (they gave it to kids then and it was pretty new as were SSRIs I think) and didn't manage to get myself weened off of it until I was 25 despite the fact it only worked, if it worked at all, for a few months.
I mentioned about switching from Effexor Xr 225mg (which on my own I lowered to 150mg) He said that Effexor XR affects two different areas of the body whereas Zoloft only affects one area. Now he mentioned NOTHING about keep taking the Effexor Xr in lower does while I make hte switch to Zoloft. Am I supposed to just switch right over to Zoloft and discontinue the Effexor Xr??
I am trying to come off my meds (wellbutrin xl 150 and effexor xr 75) as I would like to become pregnant this year. All my Dr.s say I need to come off the meds. My DR. has me taking my wellbutrin 150 mg once every 3 days and had me take 1 37.5 mg of the effexor for 5 days and no more effexor just wellbutrin. I am feeling tired, nausea and headaches I asume due to no effexor. Should I have been prescribed the effexor diffrently?
no, i went several months trying natural things like 5htp and omega oils. i do think it's much easier going from one antidepressant to another. i went from paxil to effexor with no problems, now i'm back on paxil. if you start the celexa then the withdrawal will probably go away. for me effexor was the worse antidepressant i've ever taken. if you take celexa i hope it works for you. take care.
I then took Effexor and later ther Effexor XR. Effexor XR allowed me to live a reasonably normal life raising a child and having a career. For at least 3 years my depression has slowly gotten progressively worse. My counselor and I believe it is time to add an additional medication, possibly welbutrin or change to a different antidepressant. Currently I take 300mg of effexor XR. This is the same level I have taken for the entire time I've used effexor. I would like input and advice.
Hi, I don't know the answer to your question but I understand because I just went from Paxil to Lexapro and am feeling miserable. I think it's due to Paxil withdrawel and the Lexapro doesn't seem to be working for me. Have you ever gone from one antidepressant to another?
This is to help those coming off of Effexor XR. I have been on antidepressants for 20 years, and have weaned off of antidepressants before. However, I have never been totally off of taking an antidepressant. It was decided by me (and my headache practitioner) to stop taking Effexor XR, as it might be exascerbating my 24/7 excruciating migraines/eye pain. Getting off of Effexor XR has been the worst HELL I have ever been through -- much worse than any depression.
I, personally, like Effexor. After being on Effexor XR for about 7-8 years, my psychiatrist switched me to Pristiq (which is Effexor Lite) last year because it was cheaper for me to get than the Effexor was. I can tell you this, it is the best medication for me. I'd been on Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, Zoloft, and some old-school MAOI's. But nothing, nothing, worked as well as the Effexor for my anxiety disorder.
Paxil began losing effectiveness and after seven years, doctors tried new medications like Lexapro which was less helpful. Finally I began Effexor, then Effexor XR, then increasing the dose last year. Though depression bleeds through occassionally, (feels more like the blues than a dark suicidal hole), I think I'm doing very well on Effexor XR 150 mg. But I can not help but wonder .... Will I eventually need 225mg? What will it take after that?
My anxiety got a bit better for a few years, then came back with a vengeance. I went back to the doctor and we tried Effexor XR; aside from not being able to sleep for the first few days, it didn't make me feel too bad, and eventually it helped quite a bit; I was on it for about 2.5 years with only occasional, relatively mild anxiety.
During those times I took Xanax, which worked WONDERS. It really seemed to do the trick for nearly all my symptoms, even more so than the Effexor.
I have been on antidepressives since 2000. For the last 3 years, it has been Effexor XR...following my daughter's death, my dose was increased to 225mg/daily. Well, when my medical insurance changed...I determined that I had to switch to a generic...could no longer afford the copays.
In January, my MD directed me on how to wean myself from Effexor XR...so I could begin a generic form of Celexa.
My God. If this is what withdrawal is like, I am fortunate that I never abused drugs.
There really is nothing that needs being done about it.
It's no secret that SNRI drugs such as Effexor, Pristiq, and Cymbalta do have a higher risk of what is called Discontinuation Syndrome.
SSRI's can also be nasty buggers to discontinue. Paxil being one of many.
I hear a lot of people complain about antidepressant Discontinuation Syndrome, but I never hear then speak of the flip side.
I used to take Effexor XR at 300Mgs a day for about 4 years.
I had anxiety which got treated with effexor xr. I was on effexor for two years normal. I went to my psych and said that I am normal taper of seroxat and I want to be medicine free. He suggested me not to do that. On my request again and again he tapered off effexor. Last month I was on 50mg effecor and suddenly started to get all the anxiety symptoms back. The doctor put me on Zoloft 50 mg 2 tab day and 2 tabs evening starting from one tab and tappering off effexor plan.
