Effexor xr vs lexapro

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor xr vs lexapro

Avatar f tn I am in the process of changing from 75 mg. Effexor to Lexapro after 4 months on effexor. My Dr. said for one week to cut down effexor to 37.5 and take half a 10 mg. Lexapro. Then second week to take half the 37.5 and 3/4 pill of Lexapro, then stop effexor completely and take the full 10 mg. of Lexapro. I also take 1 mg. Klonopin three times a day and 50 mg. Tenormin for the MVP/anxiety. For the first 10 days I felt great. Very relaxed, sleeping great and no anxiety at all.
Avatar f tn I have tried weaning off the effexor XR a couple times and have gone into Panic Attack mode when I do. I only will get a panic attack maybe 2-3x a year, so I know that the medicine has helped (for 6 years), but I have to say that it definetly has decreased my sexual relationship with my husband (I have heard this is a common side effect). I have heard that lexapro or wellbutrin do not do this.
Avatar n tn There really is nothing that needs being done about it. It's no secret that SNRI drugs such as Effexor, Pristiq, and Cymbalta do have a higher risk of what is called Discontinuation Syndrome. SSRI's can also be nasty buggers to discontinue. Paxil being one of many. I hear a lot of people complain about antidepressant Discontinuation Syndrome, but I never hear then speak of the flip side. I used to take Effexor XR at 300Mgs a day for about 4 years.
Avatar n tn My husband will be going on antidepessants and I would like comments on Lexapro and Lexapro vs Effexor Xr. All comments are heplful. Thank you!
Avatar n tn I have been on Effexor XR for 3 1/2 years following a hysterectomy. I have no energy (VERY tired all the time!), no sex drive (NONE!), & have gained lots of weight (about 35 pounds!). All medicines affect people different ways. This is the way Effexor affected me!
Avatar n tn In that respect, my Hep Doctor is recommending that I switch from zoloft which I have been taking for a couple years to Effexor XR. He thinks that would work better. My Psychiatrist on the other hand prefers the Zoloft as it has fewer side effects when being weaned off it. Has anyone else dealt with this as an issue? Thanks in advance for your help / input! Have a great weekend everyone!
Avatar n tn the weight gain with effexor and then even more so with lexapro. I was on effexor for approx a year+, then on lexapro for only 3months...I started to gain weight and it's taken me 7 months after not taking any of the meds to lose 7 pounds. I've always been obsessive with excercise and dieting, yet none of this has helped....soooo frustrating. I just got back on prozac and the weight is starting to drop...
Avatar f tn I was on that for 12 years and loved it, it pooped out on me last year and I am just starting it again!! I have also heard Effexor XR is good for anxiety and panic!!
Avatar f tn memory pproblems, trouble focusing, brain fog, brain zaps, muscle twitches all over my body, balance issues, mood swings, and bone crushing exhaustion and body aches. I am just now thinking that all of this started within two months of coming off Effexor XR, I;ve been off for 9-10 months and it;s not getting better. Blood work was normal except low Vit D. Lyme test came back clear.
Avatar m tn So did the Dilouxetine help you better than the Effexor? I want to get off of Effexor and return to Lexapro because for me there were little to no side-effects on the Lexapro. With the Effexor I have a hard time getting through the day without some kind of anti-anxiety medication to back it up. I hope I don't have to rely on this stuff for the rest of my life. I am going to hang in there, and I hope I will feel normal again sometime soon. Thanks.
Avatar n tn iv been on effexor xr iv gained 50 lbs.my biggest concern for you is the withdrawl symptoms when stopping it.just 2or3 days without it is hell.moodswings ,headaces, vomiting, flu like feeling, hot flashes. please talk to your doc about that.they dont tell you when you start it.
Avatar m tn Can I react differently to the Celexa than the Lexapro? Is it possible that with the Celexa I will have less side-effects since it's a more dirty version of the Lexapro it's suppose to have more side-effects no? Also, the only one SSRI who work in the past for my panic disorder is the Paxil... but hte Paxil do nothing for the social anxiety, like all the antidepressant meds I try...
Avatar f tn It is very frustrating and discouraging. I had a similar experience on Effexor XR - lost 65 lbs when I came off of it with diet and exercise.
Avatar m tn I have taken in the past Zoloft, Paxil, Effexor XR, BuSpar, Ativan, Xanax, Wellbutrin. I hate SSRI and SSNRI's they make you lose yourself and lose emotion. Like a robot. I won't take them, no matter how much a doctor tries to downplay the side effects. i'm 23 years old, and have had drug problems in the past.
Avatar n tn I had to try several meds and get through the side effects. finally the one that helped me was effexor xr. It got me up and funtioning again. It's not perfect but it keeps me out of that hell. I've recently talked to my doctor about trying to up my mood level a little higer and he recomended trying lexapro to maybe elevate the level of seritonin a litle higher so I'm going to try it and see what happens. I am no longer afraid of the meds.
Avatar f tn Well, effexor xr did work but it took awhile and alot of increases. When I got up to 187.5. I was doing better. Oh and btw the withdrawls were not as bad as everyone would have you believe. They were very manageable. I had a decent day yesterday but today the morning anxiety is back! Ugh I hate this!
Avatar n tn The reason I'm switching to Klonipin is that I feel that Xanax XR is not working well anymore for me. I take Effexor XR for depression and anxiety, and I also take Lyrica for headaches and anxiety as well. So, you can see, I'm a mess as far as anxiety issues go! Can you shed some light on Xanax XR vs plain old Xanax? Thanks so much!
Avatar n tn Anyway, then he put me on Wellbutrin XL instead which doesn't seem to be helping. He just added Effexor XR. I asked if it causes weight gain and he said no,. But since he said the same with lexapro, I am concerned. I can't afford to gain more weight. I'm 5'2" and up to 140 now and nothing fits. Its making me more depressed! Am I more likely to gain weight with the Effexor again? I really wish there was something that could work without these side effects.
Avatar n tn i came off of lexapro once and i was fine but now i know i need the medicine for the rest of my life probably....i also take valium sometimes due to epilepsy to stop seizures or t help me sleep ....thats also another med i will be on for eternity lol......plus numerous others...im on like 4 or 5 different antiseizure drugs ......cant beleive my liver is ok...but it is...
Avatar f tn Have suffered with Anxiety and Depression for the last 4 years, in that time I have been on Lexapro,Effexor and Cymbalta. About 8weeks ago Idecided to taper off Cymbalta as have felt that the medication seems to worsen my symptoms as well as making me extremely tired - I could sleep up to 16hrs a day which is not good with 2 young children.
Avatar n tn I am supposed to switch from celexa to effexor xr I have no sex drive and have gained 65 very unwanted lbs this last year since quiting crystal meth and two major surgeries after four months smoke free I started again. I took effexor on the past and it worked for me I did have flu like symptoms when I ct from it. Did I read the tread wrong are ADs addictive?
Avatar f tn //www.*************.com/anxiety/c/question/69804/36013 http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Depression/is-generic-venlafaxine-the-same-as-effexor/show/1094320 I emailed my doctor to swap me over to the Brand Name Effexor no matter what it costs and I'm hoping he is okay doing so. I will let everyone know how this all turns out! The sad fact now is that after all these turn of events, my fiancé is content with just one baby.
Avatar n tn She also suggested Biofeedback which my insurance does not cover and I cannot afford otherwise. I said no more benzos so I tried Effexor XR, I only took 37.5 mg yesterday and I was anxious all day, heart pounding, severe headache. I want to find something that works and I am at a loss, PLEASE HELP!
Avatar n tn He changed me to Effexor XR. It worked okay for the depression part but I continued with mild panic attacks. I was sent to a psychiatrist. He added xanax to help with anxiety. I then however started to have short term memory loss. So the Doc. put me on Zoloft. It worked great for my depression and anxiety however I packed on 25-30 lbs in a month. I was constantly starving on it. So he decided to try me on Celexa which I have been taking for the last 3 months.
737515 tn?1252556023 So different drugs may work better for you vs for me. It's a trial and error. I like Lexapro, it's supposed to be one of the easier SSRI's. =) Good luck to you.
Avatar n tn just started me on 10mg Lexapro last week to help with my bad anxiety/panic disorder. I am having a hard time adjusting to the Lexapro, (more anxious, very tired, zoned out, light headed) and was just curious if anyone else with svt has anxiety disorder and takes anything? I've tried Xanax, but it just makes me depressed, but does take the panic away. However; she won't prescribe me Xanax anymore, only an SSRI. My psychologist thinks that is ok for me to try the SSRI, so he is backing my Dr.
Avatar n tn I switched from Lexapro to Wellbutrin because of weight gain and high blood pressure and have had wonderful results. Blood pressure is normal again and I have lost weight. Hopefully this medication will work for you too..
Avatar f tn As I'm also on Abilify, Lamictal, and Effexor XR and have a very hard time losing any of the weight I really need to lose, I talked to her about it, and she ended up giving me a script for Metflorpen. It's a med that's technically for pre-diabetics, but is often given to people dealing with *severe* weight gain from side effects. It changes how the body uses the calories that we eat. I would definitely as your doc about the weight gain, and ask what they would recommend.
96108 tn?1197694930 He put me on Lexapro which sent me to the ER with a panic attack. I was then put on Effexor XR with the same problem and was referred to a Psychiatrist. Since seeing the Psychiatrist due to problems with the meds worsening anxiety or not working. I have also been on Zoloft, Celexa and am currently on Cymbalta. I also have Xanax as needed. I have also been to many specialists for physical problems since January, Urologist- for bladder control/urgency.
Avatar f tn I am right there with you. I take Effexor XR and feel like it's not working but I also know I am mourning the loss of my drug. I am a lost little soul right now just plugging along. Like Vickie said it takes 2-4 weeks to kick in. I would say if it doesn't seem to help at all either try to increase back to 40 mg or go back and try something else. I do know a lot about antidepressants from personal experience as well as being a psychiatric nurse for 20 years.
