I am taking 300 mg of Effexor XR day and have been for about 4 years. My problem is after a period of time I seem to build up a tolerance for the medication. This is now happening with the Effexor XR. Has anyone had any luck combining this med with other ones to help me with the depression with is quickly worsening again. My psych. is also trying to work out something but it is getting to the point where I am just ready to quit trying because nothing seems to be helping. Any suggestions?
m sure your dr has you increasing the dose because at higher doses it has some effects on dopomine. Stay with effexor xr do not switch to regular effexor- bad side effects!!! If for any reason you stop taking effexor xr, taper down your dose to avoid w/d feelings. Hope this helps and please post any other questions you may have. Good luck!
I was put on effexor and Geodon for ptsd. They were working, put it seems they've stoped. I hate going to sleep. Its hard to be relaxed enough to fall asleep.
I got back on regular effexor and began to feel positive effects but not totally. I switched to XR Effexor and it worked better. But still not full remission. I started th regular effexor 13 weeks ago and have been on the EFFEXOR XR for 2 weeks. But I still don't feel like myself. I feel better but not consistantly good. I feel best in the PM. Mornings are the worst part of my day. I take 1 150mg dose at 9PM. Should I ask the doctor to increase my dosage to 300mg.
Is the paxil not working or are you having undesired side effects? I have not taken effexor but people have in the forum. Medications are definitely a personal endeavor in my opinion. While some may reallly like one type, others may really dislike it. In my experience, sometimes it does take a little trial ande error to find out which one is a good 'fit' for you. As long as you do this under the advice of your doctor, you are doing the right thing in my opinion....keep us posted!
I recently switched from Pristiq to Effexor XR in order to taper down. 50mg of Pristiq=150mg of Effexor. I found Pristiq did not cause as much low libido as Effexor has for me. I also didn't gain weight on it. Same might be true for Effexor for me (who knows?).
I gained weight on Celexa and felt significantly more blunted emotionally by it.
My personal experience with Effexor XR ( I was on it for 1 year for depression) is that it does not take as long to kick in, as some of the other antidepressants. I would think that you would know by now if it is working for you. I'm hardly an expert on this subject,

I'm currently taking both Effexor XR (Venlafaxine XR) and Lithium Carbonate to treat co-morbid my mental illnesses.

I tried Pristiq in an attempt to help with menopausal symptoms. I was (and am) on Effexor XR, and Pristiq is almost identical to Effexor XR. I think the only difference is in their molecules. I didn't find Pristiq any better (for me) than Effexor XR, so I went back to Effexor XR. I wish you the best of luck with it. I hope it works for you.
These things built up slowly so I did not realize it was the effexor for a long time. Extreme hostility-everyone and every thing that doesn't go my way sets me off, (I have never ever been this kind of person); gained 60 lbs. (of course you do when you're eating chocolate and sweets all day and night); sleeping 12 hours a day; exhaustion so extreme it was hard to get through the work day. I couldn't even clean the house in one day because I had no stamina.
I went to the pdoc and told him I was interested in trying the new Pristiq, he said it was longer lasting, which is a good thing in my book, but he said thats all he knows about the drug, I was stunned he didnt know any other information!!! So he told me to just stop taking my Effexor xr of .75mg x 3 pills a day and start taking pristiq .
The whole antidepressant weight gain or loss issue is still a big debate.
On one hand scientific studies show that SSRI and SNRI medications do not alter the bodies metabolism, on the other hand you see reports by people saying they gained weight on them.
In the last 16 years I have taken nearly every SSRI and SNRI medication on the market and did not experience weight gain or loss on any of them. Now, obviously I am about 25Lbs heavier than I was when I was in my 20s.
All my anxieties and panics have gone, along with the depression. I know not everybody gets the same benefit as me from Effexor. I also do not know if there is much difference in the original, and the generic form. I may have felt just as well on the generic. I do know that because I have been well on Effexor in the past, I am relieved I am on it now.
