Effexor vs paxil

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor vs paxil

effexor

Avatar f tn t really matter what you do, but the cautions are for those who have a difficult time. With Paxil and Effexor, this is most people. Paxil also has a very strong effect on choline receptors, which no other drug probably approaches in this category. But again, first you taper almost completely off the first drug, then if the person is having a difficult time you can try Prozac to see if it will help. Even then, it is often used in very small doses in the liquid form just to get people past it.
1423357 tn?1511085442 Her oncologist placed on the SNRI Effexor. Getting off Paxil and onto Effexor had some problems. She slowly ramped down on the Paxil BEFORE starting the Effexor. There were episodes of crying for no reason and several weeks of other slightly odd behavior before things smoothed out. But my wife says she has never felt as good as being on Paxil. So our physician has suggested that she return to Paxil.
Avatar f tn in the case of Effexor (Venlafaxine) it is ok to start most SSRI meds (Including Paxil) without first tapering down on the Effexor. In fact many people take Effexor along with an SSRI med as part of their treatment. Effexor is different enough from Paxil that the odds of an adverse interaction is very uncommon. Now you would not be able to do the same with another SSRI like Zoloft, Lexapro, Prozac, ect.
Avatar f tn My own advice is to taper down very slowly on the Paxil if you want to stop taking it before taking another med. Effexor will not necessarily substitute for Paxil, so you could find yourself suffering Paxil withdrawal and thinking it's a side effect of Effexor, nor should you be taking both at the same time since that could lead to an overload of serotonin. Do you have a psychiatrist or a regular doc?
1110049 tn?1409402144 I have found a difference in the generic form of Effexor. I have asked to be put back on Effexor, and feel much better for it. The doctors and pharmacists may not agree, but my body tells me what it feels. We are all different, and what works for one person, does not work for another. A doctor told me there is little difference in the price, but then I am lucky, as I don't have to pay. In UK under 16s and over 60s do not pay for their medication. One good thing about the NHS.
Avatar n tn I took Paxil for years, now have to try something else for anxiety and depression, tried Zoloft but after 4 days I realized I was feeling the side effects too much, try Effexor after 3 days of nausea and on the third day hanging my head in the toilet from the nausea. My head felt better but it just made my stomach and guts feel retched. Now I am wondering about something herbal but don't know what would control these brain zaps. One week before I can see a dr.
Avatar f tn Effexor is a lot worse than Paxil come on , if you have been on 300 Effexor for years it will take for ever to detox and every day will be BAD. that's why there are still people on 75 mg Effexor all there life they cannot shift the last 75mg without extreme with drawl that a lot would sooner not risk , I lost my hair to with drawl this med, it grew back , I joined a forum venlafaxine .
693786 tn?1227636912 Paxil and Effexor are not necessarily interchangeable medications. Please contact your physician and ask what the best course of action would be. Your doctor may be able to call you in an emergency supply of Paxil at a local pharmacy or give you some samples until your order arrives.
Avatar n tn Paxil and Effexor both have a ton of side effects, so who knows? A question though: why did your doc skip 30mg of Paxil and go right from 20 to 40? I believe 30mg is the average dose. And remember, both Paxil and Effexor can have a bad withdrawal, so whatever you do, do it slowly and carefully.
Avatar n tn Does anyone out there take effexor xr for aniexty and depression? I am on paxil right now but I am thinking of going on effexor xr. Any insight will help.
Avatar f tn I'm confused -- are you saying that you're on Effexor and Zoloft and Paxil at the same time? Or Prozac and Paxil at the same time? You can't do that unless you've tapered down slowly off the Paxil -- you can't take two drugs that target serotonin at the same time if you're still at a medicinal dose of the first one.
Avatar f tn I understand what you are going through although it seems you are having a much tougher time going off it than I did. I went on Paxil after I got off Effexor and it is a God Sent for me. I was leary because I didn't hear good things about Paxil but I have to say it was worth going through the withdrawls from Effexor to be put on somethineg that really works for me with none of the side effects that Effexor has. I'm crossing my fingers for you.
Avatar n tn I weaned off effexor 37.5 mg and stopped taking it 10 days ago. Then I went on Paxil for 5 days it didn't sit well so I stopped it, I am now having horrible headaches, and I am very out of sorts. Is it possible to start withdrawal effects 10 days later?
Avatar f tn For me, my weight gainer was Paxil, which is more likely to be a big weight gainer than Effexor because Effexor is a stimulating drug that affects norepinephrine as well as serotonin, while Paxil only affects serotonin, but I gained 50 pounds over a period of years. When I stopped I almost immediately lost 30 of those 50 pounds, but not the other 20.
Avatar f tn no, i went several months trying natural things like 5htp and omega oils. i do think it's much easier going from one antidepressant to another. i went from paxil to effexor with no problems, now i'm back on paxil. if you start the celexa then the withdrawal will probably go away. for me effexor was the worse antidepressant i've ever taken. if you take celexa i hope it works for you. take care.
Avatar m tn I would talk to your pharmacist or doctor about the combination of paxil and buspar. Perhaps you can time when you are taking them better. As far as withdrawel, that is easily remedied with all ssri's. You titrate back down. If you were on 25 mg, you'd cut back by 5 or 10 mg over the course of a few weeks. With all ssri's---- never stop cold turkey. (but there isn't a big difference in 20 mg of paxil vs 25 . . .) I think 20 mg is the usual dose of paxil, however.
Avatar n tn I have been taking Paxil for PTSD for several years. It has also markedly helped with my fibromyalgia , irritable bowel syndrome, and urinary incontinence.. When I first started taking it, it caused me to lose 27 pounds. I have heard from doctors that after a while the Paxil can "turn on you" and start causing the same symptoms it was alleviating, such as weight gain, anxiety, etc., as well as new symptoms.
Avatar m tn I had been on Paxil for about 10 years and I believe it just wasn't working well enough. I tapered off of it in about 3 months without any problems. I have been off of it for about two months. Two weeks ago our air condition system conked out and I had to replace the whole unit. Spending $3000 kicked off an episode of anxiety that has lasted since then. I'm coping but, I do notice that I don't feel the same as when I was on Paxil, so I guess it was helping a bit.
1128643 tn?1262483649 Prozac, Zoloft, Effexor, amitryptiline, Paxil, trazadone, Serzone...all but MAOIs. They either had no effect or the averse effects outweighed the positive (zoloft kept me afloat by making me numb to all feelings altogether). Finally, in 2003, I was in a study for treatment resistant depression and Lexapro quite literally saved my life. I was later switched to Celexa for financial reasons. I had no problems transitioning and have taken it for the past six years.
Avatar m tn Just a cautionary note on Effexor. My wife switched from Paxil when it was discovered that it severely reduced the effectiveness Tamoxifen she was taking following breast cancer. She switched to Effexor which did not interact, but now that she's on it, getting off of it to go back to Paxil is very difficult. While she's not "hooked" on it, stopping Effexor can cause some wild effects. There is lots of web reading on this, so just be careful.
Avatar m tn Go see a different psychiatrist. If what you say is true, the one you have needs to have his license revoked. If all these drugs were the same they all wouldn't have been able to get a patent and FDA approval -- you can only do that by proving it's different than what's already on the market.
Avatar m tn d want to say that you should consider each very carefully before starting either family of drugs. My wife was on Paxil (Alprazolam) for many years before switching to the SNRI Effexor (Venlafaxine) following treatment for breast cancer. It was found that SSRIs interfered with the Tamoxifen that she was taking. Both drugs have serious withdrawal symptoms if stopped for any reason, and it can show up within as little as 24 hours from ceasing the medication.
Avatar n tn Which has more side effects, Paxil or effexor?? Which is easier to ween off of Paxil or Effexor? When you ween off of a med. do the side effects subside?? I am so scared. Somebody please answer. Thank you so much.
611559 tn?1233776445 I have taken Effexor XR for about 5 years, which followed a course of Paxil. The Paxil was preceded by a course of Zoloft. The anti-depressants were given to me because I have a physical disability with chronic pain, and anxiety that began at the same time as the pain. Anxiety was the worst, but as my life tanked from inability to do many things, the depression grew. Zoloft did not help much; I gained 60 lbs. on Paxil. When switching from Paxil to Effexor, I lost about 20 of the 60lbs.
Avatar n tn Its disgusting! Unfortunately, it IS a side effect of the Paxil. I was on Effexor from 1987-2001. I was switched to Paxil (because I had moved and my new insurance wouldn't cover Effexor any longer) after a week long withdrawal period to get the Effexor out of my system. I have been on Paxil ever since (11yrs.) and I have only experienced the sweating issue for the past 2yrs. I had a COMPLETE hysterectomy in 2001 (age:31, 185lbs.
Avatar f tn I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a good anxiety drug other than Paxil, Effexor or Lexapro. I was on Paxil for years and it worked well for me but my doctor switched me to Lexapro which made me extremely sick as did Effexor. Anyway, now I am about to go back on Paxil because it was the only drug that really worked for me and didn't make me sick but I have one problem.
Avatar m tn I, personally, like Effexor. After being on Effexor XR for about 7-8 years, my psychiatrist switched me to Pristiq (which is Effexor Lite) last year because it was cheaper for me to get than the Effexor was. I can tell you this, it is the best medication for me. I'd been on Prozac, Paxil, Celexa, Zoloft, and some old-school MAOI's. But nothing, nothing, worked as well as the Effexor for my anxiety disorder.
Avatar m tn I took Paxil for a few months then switched to Effexor because it was giving me too many side effects (and I was on a low dose)
