Common Questions and Answers about Effexor in pregnancy

effexor

173732 tn?1226758694 According to the manufacturer of Effexor, there are no available reports on the use of Effexor during human pregnancy. Effexor should be used in pregnancy only where the benefit to the mother clearly outweighs any potential risk to the fetus. Alternative agents should/may be considered. If the doctor and patient decide to continue venlafaxine during pregnancy, discontinuation symptoms should be considered in the newborn at birth.
Avatar n tn Effexor is a Cat C drug, crosses the placenta near the end of pregnancy..there is an increase chance of low birth weight and unknown demise (very low, but there). It will show up in your breast milk. Being a Cat C, it is considered safe to a point (which apparently is third trimester). NEONATAL SIDE EFFECTS: Restlessness, hypertonia, jitteriness, irritability and poor feeding occurred in a neonate after maternal use of venlafaxine for depression during pregnancy.
958812 tn?1268764172 ve heard that zoloft, especially a low dose, is a lot safer to take than effexor. if anyone has taken it during pregnancy please give me some feed back. i want to make an educated decision. i'm posting this in the depression forum too.
Avatar f tn I was on effexor 75 mg for almost 7 months. Now that I am pregnant, my doctor stopped the effexor gradually and it is been now 5 days that I stopped completely the effexor. I have bad withdrawl symptoms. like anxiety, I cannot sleep at night, mood swings, dizziness, and i cannot sleep at night. can I switch to prozac ?. my doctor's opinion not to take any anti-deppresants medications for at least the first 3 months of pregnancy are completed.
Avatar f tn Congratulations on your pregnancy. I understand you wanting to get off the Effexor quickly as you are pregnant, but if you do not withdraw slowly, you will get withdrawals, as you are experiencing. I was on 150mg for years, but I am lucky and could withdraw slowly, so it took 10 months, and I was fine with no withdrawals. You do not have that option. I did go cold turkey off Effexor once before, and was bad for 2 weeks, and then fine until depression returned.
Avatar f tn Effexor can raise your cholesterol. I went through the same thing as you several years ago when I was taking it. Now they put this as a possible side effect of this med in PDR's. Once I got of this med my numbers went right back to normal. I would recommend getting one more test done and if your numbers are still high get off the Effexor.
Avatar n tn Zoloft is a one trick poney and effects only Serotonin. Effexor effects both Serotonin and Norephinepherine. Big difference in the two drugs. I am pretty sure you will find Zoloft much less effective, as most people do.
Avatar f tn So I am in the process of weaning myself off Effexor. I started at 225mg and just went from 150 to 75. My first step down was not too horrible, but I think this step may be a little worse. And I worry that the final step will be unbearable. Any advice for dealing with the symptoms? I keep telling myself how wonderful it is going to be to not be on meds after 6 years on them to get myself through. And if I do need to go back on meds, that's okay too, but it will not be Effexor again!
Avatar n tn I feel for you!!!!!!! :( I have panic disorder, and thankfully don't take Xanax every day. I only take it when I'm starting to actually have a panic attack. I take Effexor every day, though. It's been the only daily drug that's helped me control my panic, and thankfully my doctor says it's okay to take during pregnancy. I'm 11 weeks and I'm down to 75 mg of Effexor and only .25 mg of Xanax only as needed (which is about less than once a week). Good luck, girl!!!
Avatar n tn FDA pregnancy category C. Effexor may be harmful to an unborn baby, and may cause problems in a newborn baby if the mother takes the medication late in pregnancy (during the third trimester). Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Effexor can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Avatar n tn I have an appt this week with my doc. I have noticed that once in awhile I am very sad in the mornings. Like I am missing someone is the only way I can describe it. The only thing I can think of is the few times this has happened I have had two or three beers the night before. Does this make sense and is this something that has to do with the diabetes? I am also on effexor for anxiety. Oh, and, I have HOT and SWEATY alot. thanks!
Avatar f tn As with other serotonin reuptake inhibitors, these effects are generally short-lived, lasting only 3 to 5 days, and rarely resulting in severe complications. Use of Venlafaxine in pregnancy should be considered on a case-by-case basis. Venlafaxine use during pregnancy increases the risk of spontaneous abortion.
Avatar f tn I've been taking Effexor IV at 150 mg. in the a.m., then plain Effexor 75 mg. in the evening for @ 2 years. Then a few months ago my hair started coming out terrible, and it, too, became very fuzzy like cotton candy, wiry and dry. I thought it was from Miralax which is the only "new" thing that would have entered the equation. I wonder after reading these responses if the Effexor can cause hair loss that long into use as 2 years. Any ideas?
629668 tn?1222914854 congrats on ur pregnancy! yay, maybe ill look into that ativan and ya your right once if i do get pg maybe i wont need them anymore, that would be great!
Avatar f tn i went to the pharmacist to ask what affects they have in pregnancy..pharmacists know more about actual medication than drs..i stopped taking mine but my sister has been on the same ones as the drs decided she needed them..shes got a perfectly healthy 3 week old baby girl now..
Avatar f tn While I believe you DO need to get off the Effexor during your pregnancy, I think your OB/GYN was in error telling you stop this medication abruptly. I personally would recommend that you see another doctor immediately. You could also speak with your local pharmacist, who is a Doctor of Pharmacology and tell him/her your situation. He/she cannot change your dosage, but they CAN tell you if what your original OB advised was the best/only route for you to take.
Avatar n tn I've been trying to get off Effexor for months now. I tapered down over three weeks, but when I stopped completely, the withdrawal symptoms were terrible. I didn't know what was happening to me until I found this website. On the basis of something I read online, I had my doctor prescribe tablets instead of capsules. I've been cutting these down slowly, not going to a lower dose until I don't feel the dizziness for over a day. I'm down to 1/8 of a tablet, once a day.
Avatar f tn I am currently 10 weeks pregnant with my second child. I was diagnosed July 2017 with GAD ad was prescribed effexor. Originally 75 Mg but after finding out I was pregnant my doctor changed me to 37.5 for 2 weeks and then stopping or switching to zoloft(its safer while pregnant) I decided to give it a try and just get off meds. The withdrawals of effexor has been brutal. Between the vomiting, nausea etc and being pregnant, it has been brutal.
1252901 tn?1271131868 As I go through your set of symptoms,it seems to have some relation with your pregnancy and drug history..Its better you take the pregnancy test and confirm that you are pregnant no way.If you are pregnant then every symptom seems to have a relation with it.But as per the drug history it drives me towards the adverse effects of Effexor drug which causes anorexia, headache, and GI problems like the one you stated. So why have been using that prescription for?
Avatar n tn My husband and I want to start a family in the next year or so. My doctor said that I must start weaning myself off the effexor as it can be harmful to a baby. Secondly, she said that I will probalby need fertility treatment in order to get pregnant because of the cysts. I feel totally freaked out by all of this. I can't imagine going off the Effexor, it changed my life for the better. And having to go through all the fertility treatments on top of it all is really scary!
Avatar f tn Hi. Out of curiosity. What's highest dose allowed for Effexor extended release capsules? I'm at 150 at 180lbs and my anxiety wanted to know before I called someone..
Avatar n tn I have been on effexor rx 75 for ten or so years. In '97, when I moved home to care for aged parents, I was on Paxil, but my parents thought it made me too talkative and I got off it. Cold Turkey (the doctor didn't know about slowly changing dosage) - talk about emotional WRECK . . . I was angry/nervous/crying/and felt on edge and zappy.
2036568 tn?1330482758 I am wondering if anyone else out there has been on Effexor XR 75 mg before and had to be taken off of it. My OB doctor switched my med's recently because my anxiety in this pregnancy has been way too extreme and I am wondering if some of the feelings I have been having could be from changing the med's. I have been dizzy and light headed .. sometimes feel like the world is spinning and I am getting headaches.
1176402 tn?1278321169 Sorry, but I need to step in and warn people that if they want to wean off Effexor, they absolutely should NOT do it like you did. It is NOT the "best ever" method for weaning off a potent antidepressant. Anybody who wants off their antidepressant should first consult with their doctor about the best way to accomplish this and to keep in close contact during the withdrawl process. I hope you continue to "feel great and on top of the world.
Avatar f tn How do I find a neurologist who is educated in Effexor withdrawal? I have a mild seizure disorder, my Mother was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia, and I am "addicted" to Effexor, which I have taken for 10 years and cannot seem to break free from. Put that all together and I feel as though my worsening memory issues spell our DEMENTIA in big, bold letters. Can anyone make any suggestions? Thanks...
