Avatar m tn Hi, I recently was diagnosed with Narcolepsy. Im 15 years old and for the past couple years Ive been struggling with falling asleep ALL the time. Ive gained quite a bit of weight, and thats basically ruined my life. I just started treatment about a week ago. I would take Ritalin LA first thing after breakfast, and then 3 more short acting 10ml doses throughout the day "as needed".
631119 tn?1222782326 First time I had these symptoms were actually back in 2003 when I was taking Effexor for some depression and low energy. I know Effexor affects/increases specifically 2 chemicals: Serotonin and Norepinephrine. When I told my doctor about these "brain zaps" or "brain shocks" I was getting, he took me straight off the effexor and right on to Paxil (which only affects serotonin alone). But today, 2022, is a whole NEW problem.

Just want to help my baby sister...
Avatar n tn During my first visit with him it seemed as if he was questioning whether or not I really have narcolepsy. He then said that I have to be retested for narcolepsy before my next visit. Is it normal to be retested every few years or so?
Avatar f tn It sounds like he needs to get a sleep study done, especially an M.L.S.T study, this will test for Narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is when a person can be wide awake and talking one minute and then just fall asleep for no reason. Does he only do this at night while he is driving home?? Or does this happen during the day as well?? If it happens a couple times during the day then I would say he should be checked for Narcolepsy.
2018891 tn?1329003897 Hi everyone I was diagnosed in 2010 with Narcolepsy & Cataplexy. One thing that I've been wondering, does anyone here get a severe headache after a cataplexic episode/sleep attack? I was in the hospital for a week in october because I kept "passing out" although that's not what I called it. I would feel strange, fall over, and be completely limp for 30ish seconds. Then I would get up and sometimes have trouble walking and a few hours later I would get a MASSIVE headache.
807506 tn?1248649733 Can dopamine or steriod levels be tested for example. I have narcolepsy with cataplexy but I think there is somethin else wrong. I have been on experimental drugs as well as very hih doses of prednisone(as much as 100mg boosts as a child) and drugs like adrenaline, susphrine, theophilyn etc. I m concerned that its affected me. Ive read that prednisone has eliviated eds in narcolepsy, and I tke codeint to stay awake. Im thinking certain levels may have been affected. My Dr.
746058 tn?1248344665 Hi, My name is Lois (Groggyfroggy) I'm new here. My OBGYN also put me on Effexor for hot flashes and night sweats because I wasn't a candidate for hormone therapy and I'm going thru' menopause. I happen to have POTS, but wasn't put on the medication for the POTS. I became very sick after that with nausea, shakiness, and a most terrible moodiness. I had to be taken off the medication and it took quite a while to get out of my system.
429925 tn?1203905115 What is the maximum dosage for Effexor XR? Also, is it advisable to take with Lorazapham?
Avatar f tn My physician did not call in a temporary refill and I could not get any pills sent to me before next week so I had no choice but to withdraw suddenly. I have been without the Effexor for 5 days and I do feel horrible. I have not been out of the house and it is all I can do to wash the dishes and pick a few things up around the house. I too am suffering from dizziness, nausea, constipation, panic-like attacks, and now today I feel like I could cry all day.
Avatar f tn I have Narcolepsy- My vitamin B 12 level is 235- should it be higher for my condition?
Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
Avatar f tn I have a month until I see my neuro- but does this sound like narcolepsy?? My need for sleep has taken over my life, and it *****. I am determined to overcome this!
1287446 tn?1313947638 Hi everyone. I am not familiar with Narcolepsy or sleep disorders in general but my sleep has always been different. Typically, I fight daytime sleepiness with caffeine. In prior years, the caffeine has been a lot but I’ve lowered it significantly.
Avatar n tn The combination of this study and my first MSLT nap study produced a perfect pattern for diagnosis of Narcolepsy. Has there ever been a study to look at the coorelation between the 2 diseases. Would many CFS sufferers be classified narcoleptic if they took the appropriate test? Narcolepsy leads back to hippothalmus and lack of production of hypocretin/orexin(?). Seems like all things lead to hippothalmus. Thank you!
Avatar f tn Has anyone else taken this combo with Effexor to help with the insomnia? I am open to other suggestions for natural supplements to take with the effexor. It seems to help with the migraines so far. I had only 1 so far in the past 3 wks. Before that, the dr. put me on Celexa and it caused 3 day migraines every week.
Avatar f tn i was wondering if i should be tested for narcolepsy, or if diagnosed with narcolepsy would they prescribe me to something similar to adderrall? if this were the case, being tested would not matter much if they would give me the same medications anyways. I just dont want to be misdiagnosed and on the wrong medication for the rest of my life.
Avatar m tn s a stimulant that is used to treat sleep disorders like narcolepsy. While researching it, I found that it was being used as an adjunct for the treatment of depression. It really helps me combat the side effects of the other meds that I am taking. My pdoc was skeptical when I suggested the Pro but he seems to be an advocate now.
2164295 tn?1337019528 He takes Ritalin for the narcolepsy and clomipramine (generic for Anafranil) for the cataplexy. The Ritalin helps, but he can only take 3 pills a day (insurance won't approve more), and he really needs at least 2 more a day to stay awake and function. He has bad nightmares and yells out in his sleep when he does not have the clomipramine.
Avatar m tn I have been suffering from chronic pain. My doctor has prescribed Effexor for the depression that goes along with the chronic pain. I've read a little about Effexor and am not sure this is right for me. The dose now is 25mg once a day with food and increasing to 2 times a day as "tolerable". Any one here have experience with this stuff?
Avatar f tn Have you consulted the sleep specialist to get the sleep study? Hope you have got lot of information on the narcolepsy. Thanks to mastkids for having shared his experience and valuable thoughts. Hope you too are able to get adequate sleep and following up with your doctor. Avatar f tn Stopping Effexor can be very hard for most people. Now, if it hasn't done anything for you, it will probably be easier, but you want to do some homework if you're going to rely on medications for your treatment. You need to know how they're used most safely. Cymbalta and Effexor work in a similar way, and target the same neurotransmitters, and that can cause problems.
Avatar n tn t go to sleep or if I go to sleep I wake up in the middle of the night. I was only taking the effexor for a few months and then I stopped because my family scared me into thinking that I would never be able to get off of it. While I was taking it I was so relaxed and I slept through out the night. I loved it. When I stopped nothing happened. I was prescribed 37.5 mg, which my doctor told me wasn't addictive. Would I be okay with a low dosage like that?
