Effexor and triptans

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor and triptans

effexor

Avatar f tn When I was taking the triptan Axert, and I was on a different antidepressant, Effexor... I once got very sick and my doctor thought it might have been Seretonin Syndrome and changed my triptan to Zomig (Axert only comes in a very high dose). I never had any problems with the Zomig, and I took it while I was on the Effexor for a very long time.
1125820 tn?1265284446 Statistically, compared to the other triptans, Imitrex Injection, Zomig Nasal Spray and Maxalt-MLTs have the highest success rates for total pain relief in the shortest amount of time. Although, everyone is different and all of the triptans on the market have been proven effective in clinical trials, so which one is best for you is really a personal choice that should be made by you and your doctor.
Avatar m tn Triptans constrict blood vessels in the brain and relieve swelling and is used to effectively and quickly relieve headache pain, sensitivity to light and noise, and nausea and vomiting associated with migraines. They are indicated for moderate to severe headaches. Migraine management, however, may vary from one person to another. And what works for one may not work for another. It is best that you check with your attending physician also for proper management. Take care and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn I did a little homework on this and this is what I found..You can copy/paste the link into your address bar to view all the info: Serotonin syndrome most often occurs when two drugs that affect the body's level of serotonin are taken together at the same time. The drugs cause too much serotonin to be released or to remain in the brain area.
Avatar f tn Although in my research of late, as I am really trying to get to the bottom of this most annoying condition, I have found that the description for complicated migraines seems to fit my symptoms rather well and I am concerned as I have come to rely very much on triptans to help lessen the severity of the attacks (I get no less than 6 migraines per month) and after reading about complicated and hemiplegic migraines and the risk of stroke triptans may present in this type, I am concerned.
1102283 tn?1257817472 d personally suggest getting a few triptan prescriptions or samples at once if possible due to the fact that you do not have insurance and triptans can be very expensive and you may want to be able to have a selection of price-points to choose from once at the pharmacy. The fast acting triptans such as Zomig Nasal Spray and Maxalt-MLTs are some of the best triptans on the market, but they are also the most expensive triptans on the market.
Avatar f tn A small percent of people cannot take triptans, and then NSAIDS are often considered as an alternative to triptans. If the Panafren Plus is currently working well to abort your acute migraine attacks and you are not getting rebound headaches or frequent migraine headaches then there would probably be no reason to consider switching to a triptan...
Avatar f tn Metoclopramide is an antiemetic that stops nausea/vomiting and also increases the effectiveness of other migraine medications such as triptans and pain killers. If you find that you cannot take triptans, you might want to ask your doctor about a combination of Metoclopramide and Tylenol with Codeine. Never mix a prescription medication with an over-the-counter medication unless your doctor has instructed you to do so, always ask a pharmacist prior to purchasing and combining medications.
Avatar m tn It could be a migraine triggered by exercise as a "bright light" in your vision could be a migraine aura and then followed by a headache could be a "migraine headache". This is what doctors would call a "Migraine with Aura". Migraine can be triggered by intense exercise... or any stress to the body at all. So, that explains why it could be happening after exercise. BUT, it could also be other things.
476246 tn?1418870914 Some common SNRIs are Cymbalta® (duloxetine) and Effexor® (venlafaxine). Some common triptans are Axert® (almotriptan), Imitrex® (sumatriptan), and Relpax® (eletriptan).
1100598 tn?1413127426 After a concussion last summer, I started getting them almost daily, where I would get blurry vision, tremors in my hands, nausea, difficulty speaking, pain in the left temple, and falling. My doctor started me on Topamax, 100mg, which has helped with the symptoms, although I still fall occassionally. She was able to rule out epilepsy. I was wondering if anyone else has these symptoms when they have a migraine?
Avatar f tn Other combinations of pain killers with anti sickness medicines like domperidone and metoclopramide. The prescription medicines like triptans, rizatriptan and zolmitriptan come in various forms like nasal sprays, injections and tablets that dissolve on the tongue and can be used for you since nausea and vomiting is an issue. Prophylactic medicines like propranolol, pizotifen and valproate can be tried.
190673 tn?1259203266 I have been taking Effexor XR 450mg and Buproprion 450mg for a couple of years. I'm weaning off the Effexor, going onto Pristiq and continuing the Buproprion.

Avatar n tn Frovatriptan belongs to a class of medication called triptans, and triptans are used to treat acute migraines. There are many brands of triptans on the market (Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, Axert... to name a few) but Frovatriptan is different from all of them and is used specifically for menstrual migraines. Frova is the brand name of the medication and Frovatriptan is the generic name of the medication.
Avatar n tn I switched from effexor to wellbutrin. I had to be on both medications at the same time for a long time because of the effexor withdrawal... it was so hard to come off the effexor, I was at the lowest dose for a very long time, 25mg, because I couldn't get off of it the withdrawal symptoms were too bad for me.
Avatar f tn I take Effexor for depression and forgot to bring it with me on a 3 day getaway with my 2 young boys. My girlfriend who was also there offered me a Xanax for the 8 hr. drive home just in case I lose it (my mind that is). I only took half and it seemed to work great. The drive was a breeze. Today however, I took my usual dosage of Effexor and now I'm feeling extremely detached. Like I just don't care about anything that is happening - good or bad.
Avatar n tn My doctor has suggested that I come off effexor (which i have been on for over 2 years) and start taking Wellbutrin XL. I was to take both of them for 1 week and then stop the effexor and take Wellbutrin only. I have not been feeling very good very tense, anxious, lightheaded and chest pains. I spoke to a pharmasist who suggested stopping the effexor straight away and continuing with the Wellbutrin.
616582 tn?1225068601 Apart from NASAID and opiates, there are no further choices as triptans and ergot derivatives you cannot take. You could however try the preventive group of medications which include beta blockers and certain antidepressants. Even Botox injections are supposed to be helpful in some cases. I think you should discuss this with your doctor and try and find which combination will work better. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar m tn I have been weaning of 37.5 mg of Effexor for a week and a half taking it every other day. When can I start taking 25-50mg of 5Htp. Will this be safe to do? The Effexor is driving me crazy (sweating, fatigue, nausea..etc)..
701581 tn?1279136038 When the migraines get bad I become very dizzy, vomit frequently and have loose stools-I also shiver, my toes and fingers turn white and sometimes have numbness and pain in my joints/muscles. I am presently seeing a neurologist and am on nortriptyline 40mg daily and take Imitrex 100mg when I get migraines-I also sometimes take excedrin migraine. . I am really at a loss what to do next. Ialso get very tired and achy before a really bad migraine and feel completely spaced out.
Avatar f tn Do you think the PN was always this bad and reducing the Effexor is allowing the pain and numbness to come through, or do you think the additional issues are side-effects of reducing the Effexor?
Avatar f tn hi,My DR,switched me from ativan to xanax on this past Thurs,I feel kinda more depressed and nausted,He also gave me Effexor 75 mg to take i took it on Friday and i dont know if it was the mixture of meds but my blood pressure dropped as well as my heart rate dropped, usually when i was on ativan heart ratewas in 90s it is in the 60s now,Im so afraid i havent taking another effexor,,,,i take the xanax because my anxiety is bad but i feel so emotionless has anyone taking the combination and how di
190673 tn?1259203266 I am quitting effexor (slowly but surely) and am down to 50 mg from 150. The only problem I have is depressed mood which my shrink says is a withdrawal symptom. I plan to be med free as long as I can and if I have to get back on meds ever again (been on them for 11 years continuously) it will be lexapro first because I used to take celexa and it was working better than others. My doctor said if I get too depressed to start lexapro right away. He gave me samples.
Avatar m tn Triptans were developed to constrict the cerebral blood vessels because at that time the leading theory was that the blood vessels dilate to much during a migraine. Today we know that the blood vessels do not dilate and the vasoconstriction of the triptans is seen as an unwanted side effect. Now we think they work because of the serotonine agonist mechanism. Point is; nobody knows anything!
940358 tn?1245207998 I also was on Effexor and had a incident that my eye got a bump behind the lid and turned purple (The lid ) I also had dark circles under my eyes a few days before this.
