I have been taking Effexor and Hydro....Trazadone for several years. I was away for the weekend and forgot to bring my Trazadone with me and my friend suggested I go to a health food shop to see if they had something to help me sleep. I was recommended Magnesium and 5HTP - to be taken together which I started taking a few days ago. Today I started feeling very depressed and couldn't figure out why until I spoke to a friend who said I shouldn't be combing 5HTP and anti-depressants.
im in the process of trying to get funding to see two specialist in these feilds to examine me and more than likely switch medications,i thought i was taking the risperidal for an underlying sleep issue,and the effexor xr for depression,i caught this bout with phenomonia early on

I am on 150 mg Effexor XR and have started taking 50 mg 5-htp twice daily as well since the 150 mg Effexor was not completely helping. I have noticed an reduced libido, specially ejaculation poblems. Can 5-htp cause this? I am planning on tapering effexor completely and use 5-htp in the near future. I also take klonopin and buspar. Any suggestions, comments will be really appreciated.

I got a private Dr who deals in withdrawal to treat the symptoms so he gave me 40 mg's of propananol I took it every morning to stop the palps he also gave me clonidine I take 150 mg's every night they give it to people coming off drugs.
I have been on 40 mg of Celexa for 8 months, but was still having bad anxiety so today my doctor prescribed me 37.5 mg of Effexor XR. He was going to prescribe me Welbutrin, but I had been on that in the past and it didn't work so instead he prescribed the Effexor.
Maybe I am going through withdrawal symptoms too from Effexor too. I was on Effexor and Lyrica. Effexor for depression but also for neuropathy pain in my fee also. It seemed the Lyrica and Effexor combined worked for the pain, I went to a neurologist and he took me off the Lyrica, which made me gain 60lbs! lol... and put me on Zonisamide. It has been great for my pain. But now that aI have been on it awhile I am feeling sick to my stomach every morning and my head feels fuzzy.
i'm sorry you are still feeling bad. I am just under 2 weeks off effexor and i feel like i am losing my mind. But i have heard thats expected. But a year off and you are still struggling? At this point, if I do start feeling better soon, I may need to get on something else too, but It will not be effexor again. There are many other ones out there if you think u need one, but I personally wouldn't get back on effexor. Did you have a hard time getting off it?
1st week on Zoloft, with no Effexor, there were some withdrawals, but minimal and they passed quickly. 2 days now off everything and I feel fine. The final question will be once the Zoloft is out of my system in a few days.
FYI…my physician, who seems to be experienced and knowledgeable with the Effexor, informed me that even if I tried to taper down, I would go through withdrawals. He said “why go through it? Take the Zoloft for 10 days.” Bear in mind, I was only on 150 mg.'s for 6 mo.
Just think long and hard before you commit to taking an antidepressant.
Trust me I have had to take them for 17 years. I take them because I can not fuction even on a basic level without them.
IMO, if I was not suffering severe Major depressive dissorder, then NO WAY would I ever touch an antidepressant.
Having trouble sleeping is no reason to alter your brain chemistry.
To treat an anxiety problem, he was on antidepressants (Lexapro and then Effexor for the last year) plus a daily dose of Klonopin for five years (.25 mg), between the ages of 22 and 27. We read a lot about the negative effects of antidepressants on sperm, so he tapered off the medication (under his doctor's supervision). We gave it a few months before trying to conceive. Studies say that effects of antidepressants on sperm are reversible after about three months time.
All meds come with side effects. It's wonderful that we have them to help us but we could sure do with those side effects. Wellbutrin is different from Effexor, it's a stimulating med. I took Effexor myself and was sleeping way too much just like you. I think that's why your Dr prescribed the Wellbutrin, to give you more energy.
Are you only taking the Ativan once a day? If your still feeling agitated and irritable at this dose don't be afraid to tell your Dr.
I went off of Effexor CT and it was a huge mistake. You should wean off of it. I didn't realize it at the time. I was really naive and didn't realize that all I needed to do was slowly taper instead of going CT. I almost went to the ER but my daughter was young and I had no one to take care of her. I had brain zaps really bad. Have you had those?
On march 7th I was put on Effexor for anxiety, depression and trouble sleeping. I was also put on Restoril to help with sleeping. It worked for a couple weeks, but the prescription ran out. Total insomnia happended where i just could not sleep all night and just stayed up, the whole night. I flet like I was going crazy. I was put on trazadone 50 mg for sleep. I have taken it for 2 nights now, and I sleep but both nights woke up soaked with night sweat.
Someone may have already said this (this is my first post) - but when I was on Effexor and wanted to get off it, my doctor did a replacement of Effexor with Prozac. No weaning. He said one can replace the other with none of the horrible side effects people can experience in trying to get off of Effexor. For me, this worked. I got of Effexor in one day, and then weaned off of Prozac over a period of weeks, with no yucky side effects whatsoever.
Two things you can try for the sleep problem -- melatonin and Calm's Forte. You can find them in a good health food store. Good luck.

Your husband is having bad withdrawals when you take these drugs they switch off adrenaline and when you stop them it goes into over drive. Withdrawals mimic depression he could take 5HTP this converts to seretonin in the morning and melatonin of an evening you can build up to 400 mg's and it is natural and not addictive. Ask in the health shop how to take it.
My Dr quit me off effexor cold turkey and it has not been easy, tell your husband to do some exercise.
