Effexor and lithium

Common Questions and Answers about Effexor and lithium

Avatar n tn That is why I was hoping to be able to exchange notes with someone else who had just started on lithium. As for me on my day 1 without Effexor and day 2 on 600 mg of lithium, I feel better than I have in the past 3-4 weeks. This is a good sign even if it is just a coincident. I am very interested to read about your experience with lithium and other medications you are taking. Thank you very much, and good luck.
329165 tn?1515475590 Lithium (225+450) and 300mg Seroqual. Now, 2 years + later, my Thyroid is under active due to Lithium and my Psychiatrist wants to change Lithium to something else. My challenge: I start a new job next week (after being unemployed for 7 months and really need this job!) and a few weeks ago I went low on my Lithium (skipped a few morning doses and ended up in mixed episodes and had a spider-related psychosis!) I am really anxious about one day changing my Lithium.
540310 tn?1343627720 I am still taking effexor and will start Lamictal in a few days. The lithium seemed to stabelize my moods and i felt quite calm now i am slowly going back to swinging up and then way down hopefully the new med will help fingers crossed.
Avatar n tn I'm currently taking Lithium, Depakote, and Effexor for bipolar disorder, as well as synthroid for hypothyroidism. I'm likely to be on all four drugs for the rest of my life. What kinds of long-term side effect could there be? I've put on weight, but I'm slowly taking that off. Will these meds affect my liver or my blood pressure or anything like that?
599945 tn?1240385954 ) before i started lithium. i have just come off effexor. and pdoc is talking about lamictal. i am ready to give up on meds. have been low now for nearly a year.
Avatar f tn So I added Effexor and then Abilify. Now Clonopin as well. I didn't have any negative side effects from the Lithium other than weight gain. It's a pretty old med, been around for awhile. It's a good place to start. Just discuss it again w your doc if you're worried and commit to getting you're blood work done.
Avatar n tn I have taken Effexor and Lithium for mood problems (depression and some bi-polar-like mood swings) for many years. My husband and I would like to have a child in the next few years. Is it possible to take this combination of meds and not have birth defects? What is the likelihood of this happening? Is there anything safer I could take instead? Has anyone had good results with any other med or combination of meds in place of Effexor and Lithium?
607502 tn?1288251140 Lithium and Effexor. Effexor will deplete the drive for intimacy and completion. Effexor and Lithium both, over time cause minor hand shaking intermittedly. I just want to care. Get out. Read. Drive. Be with my intimate (as in deep'\close) friends and family. I don't want to watch my Mom and Dad deminish any more. I want to be the "Mom" I can be to grown kids and grandkids. I want to be a wife not a dependent. Relate?....from the other side/male?
Avatar f tn I was suicidal, had been for 3 months, stopped eating, just anxiety and fear 24/7 all that time. Effexor plus lithium stopped that stuff, took 6 weeks for me but I'm told I was in extreme condition. For me not to eat and not even think of it is certainly a big sign. It's by far the most effective med for both D and anxiety in my experience. Many worry about coming off but I've been on it now for the third time. First time off, bad side effects, second nothing at all, third, still on it!
Avatar m tn I am not taking Effexor, but I take Lithium and have read all the bad side affects and stories on that drug and it's working great for me, so I would just ignore it, that's what I did, its working great for me and that's all that really matters in end....
Avatar n tn Where I'm leading to is that Effexor was the drug, with lithium, a mood stabiliser, which brought me back. Took about 6 weeks but the anxiety has never been anywhere near those levels since. A lot of talk therapy and so on since too of course. You have been on FX for 4 years and only to 225 mgs. It would surely have stopped helping probably years ago in my experience at those levels. I went to 550 mgs and it took a while but it still reached exhaustion levels so I had to change.
Avatar n tn When I was hospitalized, they kept me on celexa 20mg and added Lithium 600mg. I had a fantastic immediate response and actually had euphoric feelings for a few days! But then they increased the lithium to 900mg because my level was 0.44 and he wanted to get it between 0.5 and 1.0. At 900mg. i began having difficulty concentrating, hand tremors (mostly intention tremors), drowsiness -- I just felt "drugged." So we are lowering the dose back to 600mg/day.
Avatar n tn I want to be put on lithium . Is lithium better? Im also on effexor zyprexa ativan. im very impatient now with my doctor. HE said at my next appointment if I was not better he would just start taking me off effexor im getting pretty desperate here I fill I can not keep waighting months to get better. can you please help.
Avatar n tn I've been on effexor with Tegretol and it's not working....so we're changing from effexor to either prozac or lithium. I don't know which one I should try....I'm tired and have no libido. The side effects of Prozac are just that. But Lithium has more dangerous side effects. I need help deciding!
190673 tn?1259206866 I have been taking Effexor XR 450mg and Buproprion 450mg for a couple of years. I'm weaning off the Effexor, going onto Pristiq and continuing the Buproprion.
Avatar n tn So far I'm doing very well on this combination of effexor + lithium (only 4 days after I began taking of lithium 600mg a day , I was back to my normal self).I was really impressed by the results and my doctor told me that lithium potentializes the antidepressant. I have put on some weight maybe 15-20 pounds. Since I"m 48, I thought that it might be because of age. I naturally like to eat so I thought that it might be the reason.
1564087 tn?1308951118 heya, i've been diagnose with bipolar 1 and suffer from hallucinations at times. doctors put me on sequel xr.. but wasn't happy with it. now they have me on abilify and effexor but i'm worried about side effects... guess i'm just wondering what peoples experiences have been with the medication?
Avatar m tn I have Bipolar and have been recently taking Lithium Carbonate, Effexor XR, Geodon, and Klonopin. My psychatrist has been lowering my Effexor dose over the last few months. And I have been having issues with some dizziness with each decrease in dose. A little over two weeks ago, I took my last Effexor dose. Since then I've been having problems with severe vertigo, nausea, and "brain zaps.
728480 tn?1312063530 I have tardive dyskinesia and Lithium can't cause it. If you have tardive dyskinesia then it came from the anti-psychotics you took. But Clozaril is an antipsychotic that cannot cause tardive dyskinesia. That is an option. And it can help with suicidal ideations. And as for treatment for tardive dyskinesia, I am on Zofran which is very helpful and that's being used as an adjunct (additional) antipsychotic for schizophrenia as well.
Avatar n tn You should reduce the dose of Effexor and start wellbutrin at lowest dose, and then raise it, and either leave the effexor at lower dose or lower it more depending on what you are feeling.
Avatar f tn I've not heard of tremor as a reported side effect previously, for Effexor. Lithium? Certainly. Maybe there are other meds you've had that started that or even a natural problem, they do happen. Good luck and do see the doc.
Avatar n tn I have been on Effexor for about 7 years. It has been a godsend and tho I have a few of the side effects, they never come up unless I miss a dose. I recently lost my job and can no longer afford my medication so I'm having to go 'cold turkey'. This is my 3rd day without it and I'm doin ok. a little dizzy and a 'muggy' feeling in my head but I know it gets worse, I've missed as many as 4 before and I know I need to literally crawl in bed and lock my door until the worst is over. But....
Avatar m tn I have been on Wellbutrin (450mg) and Effexor (300mg) for at least a couple of years now. I was on the Effexor and then teh Wellbutrin was added. I had a mild improvement for awhile and then nothing. My doctor then added Abilify. Unfortunately that also was ineffective. I'mat a point now where I will try another path,. Over the years I have been on many different medications with no long term success. Celexa, Zoloft, Lexapro, Cymbalta and I am sure others I can't recall.
Avatar n tn You can get off Effexor and using a schedule can help. I stopped taking Effexor without adverse side effects, but that is not to say you will not have them. My doctor left it up to me because she knew I would exercise caution on the weaning process. Does your doctor know you are weaning? There is a basic schedule used when weaning from any antidepressant. In your case you could try: Week one: Full dose (75 mg) / half dose (37.5 mg)/full dose /half dose etc. for the week.
540310 tn?1343627720 After being on effexor then on zoloft and dexamphetamine then off zoloft back onto effexor now off dexamphetamine till i have been on lithium for a while and my moods are more stable. i have also been on aropax, edronex and tegretol. effexor aggrivates my liver and it was helping with the depression until now. so i really have no faith anymore and this is hopeless so i want to make sure i am aware of the side affects because the med probably won't work and may have serious side effects.
Avatar f tn My doctor old me that because these two meds work on different parts of the brain i was experiencing w/d from the Effexor- needless to say- I stopped the Wellbutrin and started taking th Effexor again. Now I want off all meds and am really not looking forward to the dizziness, crying fits, emotional outbursts and brain zaps. Here's to a hopefully short withdrawl!
607502 tn?1288251140 I know you are a fan of lithium, in fact all commonwealth countries start by the 3 classicals (valproate, tegretol and lithium). In all sites it says lithium is good for both mania and depression but your case is a counterexample. I bet everyone here tried all the possible AD's: tricyclics, SSRI, I don't think the MAO's too ancient, but there is something called SSRE (select.. sereto.. reuptak...
8958586 tn?1481364312 I love my lithium! Along with the lamictal and effexor I live a completely normal life. Only close family and friends know. I make sure to listen to them if they see changes because they are the only advocates that can see changes and inlisten to them. Wishing you luck and success in finding what works best for you. Just remember everytime you quit your meds...the harder it is to get to a stable level again.
599945 tn?1240385954 stopped today. no problems at all.
Avatar n tn I am on day 4 of the withdrawal from Effexor and I feel horrible. I have extreme vertigo, cold sweats, and of course the crazy crying for no reason. I would have been on day 6, but my mother convinced me to take a little to feel better. That only brought me back to zero. Anyone attempting this: DO NOT go back to taking a little if you are this far ahead of the game, it will only cause you frustration... I called my mom my and let her have it - she didn't deserve it.
