Avatar f tn Hospice does its best to prevent suffering from the pain of cancer, and methadone is an excellent pain medication. Morphine is preferred for the treatment of COPD because a doctor can better control its effect on breathing, however, both morphine and methadone work in similar ways -- it is just that methadone suppresses the breathing longer. At end of life, it doesn't matter much which medication you use.
Avatar n tn Many anesthesiologists and doctors/surgeons are unfamiliar with the proper equalanegesic dosage of morphine for patients on methadone maintenance, or using methadone for pain. As a result, they make the mistake of giving you too little morphine when they are using that in place of or in addition to your methadone dose for pain. Sometimes they even think that the methadone you normally take will help address your post-surgical pain. This is in fact NOT the case at all.
662972 tn?1270166301 weight gain, thristy, stomach acid ( have take anti acid daily), monthly cycle is off Hope hear from you any info always helps
Avatar f tn The methadone will make you tired and this will last for a month or so until your body becomes accustomed. I tried it years ago and I could not stay awake at all no matter how hard I tried. I told my doctor that I just could not function on it and he changed it for me. Talk to your doctor as the others have suggested you may be having an allergic reaction besides the tiredness. I hope it works out well and you can find something else for your pain, some people just can't tolerate methadone.
Avatar m tn No, none of my doctors would ever give me anything like that to help. Sometimes I wish they did LOL.
Avatar f tn t having to raise the dose to meet th epain need of their patient. And also methadone has shown to be a good pain med used for long term chronic pain relief becauuse of the above reason (and it's much cheaper). I do have to say you were on a heavy dose of oxy if i understand correctly..20mg 1 in the am, 2 in the afternoon and 2 in the evening.
Avatar f tn This is my first time asking a question online, but Im not finding very many useful answers on my own. I was put on methadone for an addiction to my prescribed pain killers 4 yrs ago. I am currently on 8mg of methadone and being weaned down 1mg every 4-6 weeks. It has been very difficult for, I have not been myself since Ive been on methadone and I have no energy, cant sleep, irritable, and in alot of discomfort/pain and sooo much more.
Avatar f tn Actually there are several very good articles on the use of methadone for long term treatment of chronic pain. It is beleived to be the narcotic least apt to be abused and has the least side effects. I'm sorry I forgot the author (a respected PM Physician) of the best and most informative article but maybe someone here will remember. I found it by goggling it. Dosage may have to be increased in time but again they beleive not as often as other opiates.
175734 tn?1225134440 I don't know if there is one specific drug. A lot depends on how the drug effects you. I have heard methodone has little side effects but getting off it can be a horror story on it's own. There will be more experienced ppl on the forum that can better answer your question. I too am working with my CPC to find a long lasting pain med that "works" for me without side effects.
Avatar f tn are these the side effects of someone on methadone????cause i dont understand how i can be so talkative in the past and have such a strong personilty.. then turn into a zombie with no emotions, is this what happens after taking the pill for a while.. as i said im a 26 beautiful women.( i dont feel that way but i have men talking to me constantly,) get compliments daily.
Avatar n tn 20 mgs of methadone is do-able...it is equal to a bit more of oxy or hydro but not a high dose..one thing u have in ur favor is u r not popping pills all day long...probably only twice a day so the habit to break is not like some who take the equal amount...about 50 mg of oxy or hydro/in my jurnal and can not recall the exact conversion/ but many take 3-4 dose a day...
Avatar n tn Opiates effect everyone differently- and the side effects and half lives of the medication can increase interactions/side effects. That being said - it sounds as if your prescribed dosing is 1-5 mg OxyContin and 1-5 mg methadone tablet TWICE per day- is that correct? Then on top of your prescribed doses- you are self medicating by taking 2 or three times the daily amount in addition- you are TRULY lucky you have not wound up dead or in the hospital from overdosing.
Avatar m tn I have been on and off pain meds due to a neck injury for years. I took myself off of the OXy's i was taken and been off for about 3 weeks. The doc gave me some darvacets and I THINK they are giving me shortness of breath. I also, take 1 soma350 a day now and two zanaflex at night to relax my twitches Has anyone else had these symptoms?
Avatar f tn The problem lies with being on it for addiction AND pain control. Methadone maintenance for addiction is used with the intentions of eventually, and gradually weaning you off of it someday. Methadone for pain control is used without the need to "taper off" of it someday. I don't think it's an opiate blocker at all, as I take it when my body gets used to used taking either oxycontin, morphine, or fentanyl (my tolerance to the drug increases).
Avatar m tn I guess I don't understand how people use Methadone for pain management IF they have to use a BT med. Doesn't Methadone block the effects of other narcotics? So how can BT meds work if they are blocked?
Avatar m tn Then changed over a 6 month period to methadone. Took 20 mg of methadone for about 10 wks and 25 mg for 2 weeks. New doctor changed me to morphine 40 mg a day(said it should be the say as methadone I was on) I went into w/d's He increased to 60mgs. Still couldn't function so he put me on fentenyl 50 one a day for one wk. I got much worse. He raised to two 50 fentenyl patches. I've been out of work for several days.
Avatar f tn It really depends on the type of pain, but the side effects and potential for abuse are far less with subs, in my opinion. Nerve pain is not really helped by opiates, they just make me high enough to endure it. I know more people who died from methadone than any other drug.
Avatar n tn This community has been a wonderful source of strength for many of us. I am hopeful that you will find the same to be true for you.
Avatar f tn I have been trying to fine forums on line where I can ask anyone who is experiencing any of these issues like myself..I am 35 years old and have been in pain management for 6 years..I was in a horrible car accident in 1999 which led me to have neck surgery a fusion on my neck..I have a 8 year old that was born in 2003 and that pregnancy was no meds at all..
Avatar f tn TN is not a methadone friendly state. My pain management specialist had me on methadone for 12 years after trying other optoids with no success. I regained about 70% of my ability to function and good pain relief. I was able to go back to work after a year in bed. With the controversery over the increase of methadone related deaths my doctor decided to wean me off methadone and put me on pain patches, then morphine, then oxy everything.
Avatar n tn Is it safe to take a low-dosage (5mg) Methadone BID for chronic back pain along with Vyvanse 30 mg daily for ADD?
1311475 tn?1274198780 I am now taking 60 mg. of methadone, trying to get off of the methadone to become eligible for other pain treatment. I didn't know where to ask this question. The 1st reason I started taking the methadone was due to heroin abuse, which I started to kill the pain from a car accident. I had dabbled in heroin use prior to my car accident. But have been clean for many years now, thanks to the methadone.
Avatar n tn I started out using vicodin/norco for legititmate pain and made the terrible mistake of going the methadone route, it became my drug of choice within a very short period of time. I wish you the best of luck in your recovery, life really is better on the other side. Take Care!!!
1050179 tn?1253899186 Some pain meds worked but not for long periods of time. The meds for fibro had intolerable side effects for me. I have been on Methadone for 2 years now becuz i became pregnant and stopping pain meds would've put too much stress on the baby. She is 2 years old now.she's happy and healthy! My issue is that I have found out through my experience in taking liquid methadone that it helps my fibro pain for a long period of time..one dose lasts 24hrs!
Avatar n tn great suggestion about the pharmacist marycarmel----i had not thought of it in this context but you are so right that they can be a great resource.
