Common Questions and Answers about Eczema treatment for the scalp

eczema

Avatar f tn Eczema, an itchy inflammation of the skin, effects many people in different forms, with one of the most common being scalp eczema. The scalp is vulnerable because the skin of the scalp is different than skin elsewhere on the body. The scalp has a very rich supply of grease from the sebaceous glands as well as carrying follicles creating long hairs. There are other symptoms to watch for with eczema besides itching.
3093770 tn?1389739126 I was instructed to wash my hair every day with a mild hypoallergenic shampoo and only slightly warm water, then apply a little bit of solution carefully, so as to treat all affected areas of the scalp without wasting it on the hair. This method works well for me. Small bouts can be nipped in the bud now that I know what to do, but the first extreme bout took a long time to completely clear up (though it improved a lot within a few days).
Avatar n tn 22yo male with history of eczema since infancy (also asthma/allergies). Historically treated with hydroxyzine and topical steroid cream. One year ago, skin condition worsened. Experienced "sunburn" like appearance to face with severe itching to scalp and face. the usual bleeding and large, painful lymph nodes to scalp and neck. Treated with several rounds of oral steroids and antibiotics. No relief presently with maximum dose of hydroxyzine.
Avatar f tn I still have the habit. Been that way for as long as I remember. My parents use to yell at me for doing it. I notice many people with the same habit. This may sound gross but I knew a guy that use to pick his nose and put it in his mouth. I once confronted him on it and he had no idea he was doing it. Weird stuff.
Avatar f tn Hello, First of all was the diagnosis of eczema confirmed for these dry red patches on the nose? This is because eczema often presents with itchy, red, dry and flaky skin. If the rash is non itchy then dry skin or seborrheic dermatitis of the face are important differentials to be ruled out. Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that causes flaky, dry, white to yellowish scales to form on oily areas esp under the nose or anywhere on face.
Avatar m tn Hello, You should not use any topical treatment that has expired in January 2010. Regarding the dry skin and scalp, atopic dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis causing dry and flaky scalp should be ruled out. The mainstay of management is liberal use of moisturizers after washing with luke warm water. Soap should be used minimally. Moisturizers should be reapplied liberally during the day. You can also use a topical cortisone (steroid) cream or ointment like dermacort(hydrocortisone).
Avatar n tn I in treatment now undergoing chemo, and have an itchy rash on my scalp. Is this from the chemo or possibly the Morphine I'm taking. I don't have the rash anywhere else.
Avatar f tn Whether or not it is eczema, see the dermatologist to find out what it is. I don't think it came from the vinegar.
Avatar n tn Several different problems can present as an itchy and red sore on the scalp. The most common reasons for dry, red, irritated scalp are seborrhea and psoriasis. If scratched, any condition on the scalp can get infected and become more itchy or painful. Also, fungal infections or ringworm of the scalp can also present as an itchy, red scalp. In addition, applying a variety of treatments may cause an allergic contact dermatitis. Is there any way you can get to a dermatologist quickly?
Avatar n tn Since you have a family history of eczema, you should consult a dermatologist for the exact diagnosis and treatment of the underlying cause. Sometimes tests of allergy panel or skin biopsy are conducted to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment options include topical corticosteroids.

Regarding the chapped lips, it can be due to vitamin B deficiency. Take some vitamin B complex esp. Vit B2 and B 12 for some days and see if your symptoms improve. Avatar n tn Hello, In most cases of eczema no one treatment will be effective. Medical research shows that the most effective treatment plan for eczema — regardless of type — involves using a combination of therapies to treat the skin and making lifestyle changes(prevention of triggers and application of lots of moisturizers) to control flare-ups. Doing so tends to increase effectiveness and reduce side effects from medications.
Avatar n tn Try medicated shampoos for dandruff. There are a number of over-the-counter shampoos available that can help. The most effective ingredients -- antimicrobials -- to look for are zinc pyridinethione, selenium sulfide, sulfur and ketoconazole (also available by prescription). If your hair is colored, don't use products with selenium sulfide or sulfur. If the symptoms persist please consult a trichologist for the confirmatory diagnosis and treatment.
495402 tn?1220617403 t put any type of ointment on it. Last night my boyfriend put some of his eczema salve on my neck and it did seem to stop the itching for a little while. Does anyone else have any other thoughts or ideas on how I can get rid of this annoying virus? How about a shampoo, is there one that I could purchase that might help out in some way? Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give me!
Avatar f tn Hi When topical corticosteroids do not provide relief, sometimes more the doctor may consider prescribing some more potent corticosteroids for some period, in adults with may be needed for adults with eczema on the scalp, limbs, and trunk or those with chronic/ lichenified eczema. Newer two topical eczema drugs like pimecrolimus (Elidel Cream) and tacrolimus (Protopic Ointment) are reserved only for cases where corticosteroids have not been effective.
Avatar f tn The only time he is lying down is his 2 naps during the day and bed at night or in the carseat on the way to an appointment. The pediatrician said it was eczema and gave him a prescription for a cream. OUr family has eczema on arms and legs and it looks nothing like this. It is dry and all over. This is only on the back of his head, doesn't seem to itch and is very bumpy and not dry at all. The thing is that eczema doesn't go away one week and come back the next every other week.
1105361 tn?1258002092 It is contagious and can spread direct contact with someone who has the condition, or if you touch contaminated items such as combs, hats, clothing, or similar surfaces. Treatment includes washing the scalp with shampoo with selenium sulfide (2.5%) or zinc pyrithione (1-2%) used 2-3 times weekly at home. Oral steroids, Griseofulvin and oral antifungals may also be required. I suggest you to get it evaluated from a dermatologist.
