The doctor said that nicotine is highly toxic to the ear drums and that my child did indeed have an ear infection,so she prescribed a low dose of anti-biotics.My mother simply does not believe that she could hurt my child unless she actually smokes around her.Which I and my husband both know simply isnt true.

I know what you mean feeling alone with this problem with ear tubes in adults. I had ear tubes put in last year and for me I feel was a big mistake! the only think that helped me was wearing my hearing aids.

However, i have been experiencing buring in and around my left ear frequently and getting headaches almost everyday. I also have frequent pain in my throat. I have gone to an oral surgeon and doesnt think i have oral herpes. My ENT finally suggested putting a tube in one ear. Tubes are a hard call for adults. My ENT said that about 50% of adults who have them done, have them removed. Have you tried Afrin for three days? If you haven't, that might help some. Only use it for three days or you could experience rebound congestion (addiction). You can take three days off and rotate. I pray that you find a solution soon.

you might want to ask a dr if they though an mir might be apropriate to rule out any kind of growth or obstruction of eustachian tube... an infection in your ear can also spread by direct contact to your throat and through blood flow to other areas.. it might be a severe bactiria like staph or mrsa which are hard to get rid of and require mutiple treatments and in such an inclosed space it would be easy for it to excalate to even worse symptoms...

If you have lots of congestion its possible for it to feel like - or sound like - you have a hearing loss. Often when I get a cold I get so much congestion in my sinus cavities and irritation in my throat that the swelling puts pressure on my eustation (sp?) tubes and the tissue around them -- making it seem like I cant hear as well. In regards to getting shingles in your ear, judging by my current symptoms, yes. I have quite a few "rashes" on one side of my head and neck, and that ear is in a lot of pain. It all showed up at the same time. I thought it was an ear infection with unrelated chemical burns from work, until my diagnosis. I see the ENT on Monday. It'll be a long wait.

You can get a throat culture to see if you carry it. But since you have symptoms you should probably see a specialist. Your symptoms could be caused by something else too.
