Yes they should have told you just like letting you know about any other medication interactions.

I talked to a pharmacist about the Nadolol my husband takes for a non-bleeding varicies and he said that grapefruit wouldn't affect this drug but would affectpropranolol which some people take for varicies. This particular pharmacist said that it is only a handful of meds that are a problem with grapefruit.
Avatar n tn This is a really good question! Grapefruit and grapefruit juice actually are contraindicated with many medications...from cardiac drugs, meds for hypertension, antidepressants. It's always good to ask your doc or Pharmacist what common interactions a medication has, both for other meds and food. Without getting overly technical, grapefruit affects the ability of a certain part of the intestine to metabolize certain medications.

Possible interactions with whole grapefruit have not been evaluated but it would be assumed to have similar effects.

Grapefruit would be a good example, it is very healthy and good for you but it has a strong slowing effect (4-6 hours) on the same pathway (3A4) in the liver that many heart medications must use. For some taking those heart medications it can cause their blood pressure to skyrocket or just not work at all until the grapefruit effect wears off.

Avatar f tn Grapefruit is one of my favorites, BUT it can interact with many meds - either making the meds more potent or diluting their strength, so it pays to google grapefruit plus drug interactions. Then if you're prescribed something that disagrees with the fruit, you can take your meds enough hours sooner or later and no harm done. But thanks for the info - and OH, for your recipe. Sounds like candied orange peel, which I adore.
