doxycycline in malaria

I'm currently taking Doxycycline for anti-malaria reasons. I was wondering if it's unsafe to take for 5 consecutive months?

I took single dose of doxycycline everyday for 6 weeks during the summer. Would that have cleared a chamydia infection.

I am visiting Laos/Thailand in Jan 2011 and I have been advised to take anti-malaria tablets while there called Doxycycline. Does anyone know if there is any interaction between these two drugs? Can it make one or the other not work as effectively? Thanks.

Well, hey! Good to hear from you. My LLMD treated the babesiosis first, and the mepron/zith did the trick. I was way better just getting rid of the babs. I haven't heard or read much of anything about lariam (aka Mefloquine) ... but I just looked it up on wikipedia (however trustworthy that is or isn't), and found some interesting stuff: "Mefloquine is used to prevent malaria (malaria prophylaxis) and also in the treatment of chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria. ...

and I still have them since returning home two weeks ago. I was taking Doxycycline for malaria prevention, for about 30 days, and stopped about a week ago. Reaction to the meds? Nasty tropical disease?

I am a fellow member on this board and have traveled in Africa doing wildlife studies, so I thought I'd chime in - there is currently no malaria vaccine, so you must be talking about malaria prophylaxis. One of the drugs used is called mefloquine, also called Larium. It is pretty effective but does cause some psychiatric side effects in people. There's another, newer drug called Malarone, which is a combination of atovaquone and proguanil.

After the event I was so worried that I started taking 2x100mg of Doxycycline each day. I had this medicine left over from a trip to asia as it is also a malaria drug. I have now been taking it for 11 days, even if I had caught Chlamydia or Gonorrhea would the drug have cleared it up by now. I have had no symptoms. also would this have cleared up any syphilis infection that I may have picked up.

Also I have been on many eye meds for this condition and was wondering if any like azasite etc could cause increase in floaters. I have had them dialated 5 times and there is no tear or detatchment.

My 11 year old son suffered a local seizure in left leg followed by a general seizure in 3 hrs. he was suffering frm high fever and was on malaria drug along with doxycycline. his reports like MRI, veinography, CFS, EEG AND OTHER BLOOD TESTS R NORMAL.what could be the reason of seizure? will it repeat. what r the precautions to be taken.

I do not want to stop taking the doxycycline as I want to ensure I am malaria free (I did get a few mosquito bites on my trip), but the thought of having heart-burn, gas, cramping, and really urgent, loose bowel movements for another three weeks is almost unbearable. Do you have any thoughts? Insight? Suggestions?

Have been on doxycycline for malaria prevention. After shaving my scrotum and penis I developed redness on the scrotum. It doesn't appear as a typical rash. There are no bumps or raised skin or edges. Red skin that is dry (initially flaky), itchy, warm to the touch, sensitive and skin appears thin. After a few days the redness spread to the penis and now the tip of my penis (penile ring) is red and sensitive.

As I was washing my hands I noticed a prescription bottle with the medication om it Doxycycline. I paniced and left without confronting her in person, sent a text after that she has not responded to. Please help, I know oral is not 0 risk, what am I at risk for?

Went to the doctor and she said it looked like an abrasion. She gave me bacitracin and a moisturizer. It went away in about a week. A week or two later another one showed up in a different location but the same general area. Used the ointments and it went away. Almost 3 months after that another one showed up, went to a different doc, he said it was ring worm, gave me clomitrazole. It went away in about four weeks. He also said it did not resemble an STD.

On the day after the incident I began to take 100mg of doxycycline hyclate twice a day for malaria prevention purposes and wondered if that might be the cause. I feel, however, that I am clutching at straws now.

t agree with you in NY or some activity you did in NY? Maybe an exposure to someone who was sick (in NY, on the plane, etc.)? As everyone else has stated, go to the doctor.

Hello, One of the rules of travel and tropical medicine is that a fever in non-native person (not taking malaria prophylaxis) in an area with endemic malaria is malaria until proven otherwise. In general, symptoms of high fever, neck stiffness, and headache are features of meningitis. And, if confusion (or mental status changes) is present, then we get concerned about encephalitis. That being said, there are many, many causes of fever and body aches (medical name is myalgias).

And also do you live in a malaria endemic country ? If yes then i suggest you get an antimalaria drug. It could also be sign of another infection asides malaria.

I recently took a three week cycle of Doxycycline for an overseas trip, to prevent malaria, would this kill a bacteria infection? Do you recomend a examination by a Urologist? Thank You!

In my opinion, if you are unsure about something, you should call your doctor to be on the safe side. There's no harm in doing so and it would probably make you feel better. Hope you get well soon.
