Doxycycline in dogs side effects

Common Questions and Answers about Doxycycline in dogs side effects

Avatar n tn In fact, there would be no harm in discussing the Doxycycline reatment and your concerns about side effects with your vet anyway, and it would be perfectly in order to call the vet's office, ask if there is a time during the day you can speak to your vet when he is not busy. No doubt he will call you back when he has a moment to discuss the treatment with you.
Avatar m tn In case anyone else has this problem, I want my experience to be available to them. There was very little to read on the DURATION of initial phenobarbital side effects on the web, and I was very frightened by what I saw. So, here's what happened with my dog. The side effects (which were severe) lasted approximately three weeks. It is possible that they can last this long. Most people say they go away in a day or two, but in very sensitive dogs, it takes much longer.
Avatar f tn He immediately started with the common side effects (panting, excessive thirst, eating everything he could fit in his mouth, etc.), but our real concern came when he started to collapse out of nowhere almost a week after starting the medication. We weren't sure what was wrong, and it took two more trips to the vet to find out that he was becoming severely anemic very rapidly. It turned out that his stomach had ulcerated, another side effect of the prednisone.

Avatar n tn I snore, and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and tried the cpap machine that tried to suffocate me in my sleep. Now I just sleep on my side and use an adjustable temperpedic mattress. It's not perfect, but it works better than 300 hundred mile an hour air forced down my throat to keep my air passage wide open to try to cure my snoring. So, my itching started a few years ago and comes and goes, mostly goes.
Avatar m tn A low dose of steroids can also be added to eliminate or decrease any possible adverse side-effects.
Avatar f tn I tried to remove one with tweezers, and it was very tacky (as in sticky) and clearly goes deep under the skin. Part of it broke off but I could still see that the pore was plugged and a day or two later top of the plug was sticking out again. i can't find ANYTHING online that looks like it.
Avatar n tn decreased side effects of phenobarbitol while still being effective to control the seizures. This may take a bit of patience because the dose may have to be adjusted several times before the balance is achieved. After the course of doxycycline discuss with your veterinarian what is best for your dog.
Avatar n tn My 7 year old male boxer has an extemely low platelet count. We adopted him from a rescue group in Dec 2006. He had a mass cell tumor on his side and I had it removed in July 2007. The tests revealed it was a grade II. At the time of his surgery, his platelet count was 27. He has been fine since his surgery. (Active-loves to play.) I took him for his annual checkup in Jan 2008 and blood work was done to check his platelet count. It was a 12.

Avatar f tn I have not yet disposed of them yet as I am still concerned as to whether or not I have the symptoms of Lyme or not and if I should stay on the antiobiotic just in case and suffer what might be the side effects...or go off of it and wonder if the fever and the sore neck/lymph nodes are Lyme Disease. My question is this: can I be having early symptoms of Lyme Disease already?? The Dr.
Avatar n tn Most antibiotics are mild, really, compared to some of the NSAIDS and steroids, but some dogs do have sensitive tummy's. Maybe giving it to her in a shot form, bypassing the stomach? I have a basset who has slow digestion and has episodes of vomiting after eating or drinking too fast and my vet gives me Reglan (metoclopramide) 10mg tablets...which funny enough I have for myself as I also have slow digestion and acid reflux.
Avatar f tn By this time I started to look up reviews on Metacalm and side effects. What I read was exactly the same as my poor dog was suffering and some dogs were actually dying because of the side effects. Baillie was taken into the useless vets and admitted overnight for rehydration. I was called the next morning to say she was fine to come least she was able to walk out in comparison to being carried in..
Avatar f tn Welcome to the forum.... Boy, your Vet sure loaded him up w/some dangerous treatments!!! My first thought was he needed his anal glands expressed & that still could be a possibility....During all this, did they express them or just start treating w/antibiotics? POSSIBLE infection does not exist! Once they express the glands, the fluid can tell if infection is present or not! Some of this doesn't make sense! Does he try to lick and bite at his anal area?
Avatar f tn -- When the weather is warm, working outdoors or walking in the woods may net you a tiny, blood-sucking hitchhiker - a tick that could carry Lyme disease. And the spiral-shaped bacteria that cause Lyme disease sometimes head for the heart, where they trigger problems that often masquerade as new or worsening heart disease. The August issue of the Harvard Heart Letter tells you how to spot trouble and prevent contact with ticks. Lyme carditis is the heart infection caused by Lyme disease.
Avatar n tn Although the majority of experts favor the ingredient for its numerous health benefits, garlic (in rare cases) has been linked to Heinz body anemia in dogs.4 However, the limited professional literature we surveyed provided no definitive warnings regarding the use of garlic… especially in small amounts (as it is here). Next, we find no mention of probiotics… friendly bacteria applied to the surface of the kibble after processing.
Avatar n tn Thankfully she was heartworm NEGATIVE in May of 2013. So in reading about lyme vaccine it should be used in healthy dogs...Because of Chloe's hx of hearworm and that treatment ...I'm not sure if she qualifies as 100% healthy...and I remeber having Chloe home the nite of her first of three shots for heartworm...she became so lethargic I could barely wake her....her heart rate was very, very fast, and she felt cold to me...I thought she was surely going into shock..
Avatar f tn They remark that long term antibiotic use has no more positive impact than a placebo and may have major undesireable side effects. I suggest you visit their article at (which also has a link to a youtube webinar).
12980073 tn?1429819661 The extra fluids given during the anaesthetic is proper protocol in unwell dogs w/kidney issues, but NOT used in young, healthy dogs!! So, why did they do this if the bloodwork was fine???? The specific blood test for the spay surgery is designed for Kidney & Liver function before a surgery, but it was stated that that bloodwork was good at this point.....Yet, fluids were given during the spay!! Why????
Avatar f tn After 6 mos of various treatments with no avail, my vet tried a drug usually used to treat skin diseases in dogs. The drug is Atopica 25mg. My cat was given 1 tablet twice a day initially, then lesser quantities. After 6 weeks, my cat was cured. I continued to give 1 tablet twice a week for 3 weeks and then stopped. It's now 1 1/2 years later and the disease has not returned. My cat is now happy and healthy. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn I hope that I can help someone since I know first hand what it's like to have an undiagnosed neuro problem. I have been in the woods my entire adult life walking my dogs etc.. In 1992 I noticed 3 bullseye rashes on my rib cage. I never heard of lyme and was not really too concerned because the rashes didn't hurt, itch or anything. Long story short. I started getting sick. One thing after another...
Avatar f tn We would all want them to die peacefully in their sleep, but this is not always the case. I have read many peoples posts on kidney failure in their dogs. Most people say that when their dog stops eating, The time is near. Watch for increasing signs and symptoms. I pray that she will go peacefully in her sleep, but if this is not the case, I am sure you will know when it is time to let her go. My heart goes out to you.... ( My lovely little yorkie..TwoBits had kidney failure.

1917408 tn?1421955640 Cefdinir, Doxycycline, and Azithromycin along with Nystatin and probiotics to help combat the side effects of the antibiotics. Is this outdated to prescribe the Doxy at this stage? If I have it, I've had it for at least 6 months (my first really horrible go round) but more likely up to 10 years (when I first started having mild to moderate symptoms and running a fever most of the time). He did want me to supplement this Rx plan with some herbal type supplements, also.
Avatar f tn I'm feeling strong enough now to do the antibiotics, but before I dial up the doc for an appointment, I'm wondering if it's possible my body killed the bugs already. Can't find anything in the literature about the persistence of Ehrlichia ... Any ideas? Thanks!
Avatar m tn as you point out, Bb has a long reproductive cycle and can be quite long-lived as well. A daunting invader! I think my LLMD switched me to herbals because the side effects are less; for example (don't ask me how), the herbals do not wipe out all the beneficial gut bacteria like the pharmaceuticals do. Somehow they seem to work better with the body. Also my insurance companies do not harass me (or him) and the cost is less than half, in fact maybe about a third of what the drugs cost.
755322 tn?1330272714 A little history: I lived in New England in Mass, Ct, and VT in hot bed of Lyme until 1977. Of course Lyme was virtually unknown then so maybe it was a secret bed. We spent our childhood playing in fields and woods with no thought of anything except avoiding yellow jacket nest and staying on our horses backs :) I was bitten by a lot of dog ticks, and took them off the dogs, gleefully dumping the flailing things into a can of gas.

Avatar n tn His theory is also that (no this may just be fanciful thinking) but in the wild, foxes and dogs will hold a stick in their mouths when they have fleas, wade into the water, until the water goes over their heads, chasing the fleas onto the stick...which they let go to float away. Now you probably think I am a crazy person! haahahhaaaa... But sometimes we need to visualize treatments working...positive thinking and attitude are paramount....
