1924139 tn?1322798705 From my experience no but people do grow out of it if they are lucky enough our healed from it. I was on Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Lamictal three years ago. My Dr took me off of Dilantin and no more problems. I was on Dilantin over twenty years and i was scared. Let me know what happens because depending on your dosage you would be off of it or almost by now. I wish you the best.
956521 tn?1246582112 one thing to know is that whatever level is therapeutic (of dilantin but probably any anticonvulsant) for him requires vigilance in taking the right dose everyday. with dilantin, you have to take the same dose without fail every day for a couple of weeks to test the level (blood test); it's not something that can be measured after one dose.
Avatar f tn I took Dilantin for years..discovered way later on that this med and phenobarbital pulls the calcium from your bones...
Avatar n tn As this occurs, the margin between an intoxicating dosage and fatal dosage becomes smaller. Symptoms of acute intoxication with phenobarbital include unsteady gait, slurred speech, and sustained nystagmus. Mental signs of chronic intoxication include confusion, poor judgment, irritability, insomnia, and somatic complaints . Please consult a neurologist and discuss this with him . If the drug is discontinued after some time , you need not worry . Hope this helps you . Take care and regards !
Avatar n tn My 6 year old Labradoodle "sophie" recently started with Gran mal seizures, this morning she had a cluster of 6 in a row. Horrific to observe , my goodness I don't want to see her go through this again. I am fairly certain it is a brain tumor due to the last few weeks of weeding out all other things. She is at the ER Vet right now on loading doses of phenobarbital. I heard that Frankensince can help with seizure activity. does any one know any more details?
959034 tn?1253671476 Because I was on Trileptal and Dilantin. Dilantin made my gums swell so I had to have surgery on my gums. Hope this helps...

Avatar n tn Please discuss the question about birth control with a pharmacist or your doctor, I do think some of the antibiotics are said to interact with birth control pills in a way that makes them less effective, but you need to hear this from a doctor or trained pharmacist, not the Internet. As far as stopping taking the doxycycline, ask your doctor about that.
Avatar f tn We create a custom designed home made canine diet and add an all-natural, comprehensive, patented dog vitamin supplement. Some epileptic dogs are able to stop the phenobarbital completely with no seizure recurrences, others are able to enjoy quality life with reduced phenobarbital dosages. \ Dogs like yours already having seizures at intervals of 30 days or less are generally started on phenobarbital, as your vet suggested. I agree with your vet that starting this makes sense.
Avatar m tn They said she was having seizures based on her low Dilantin levels. The gave her two injections of Dilantin, she seemed fine and they sent her home. Now she seems fine again, although a little weak, dizzy, and tired, but pretty good for having three back to back episodes. We went to a follow up appointment with her general doctor on Monday. He again insisted it was related to her cholesterol.
Avatar f tn My partner has the implant as a form of contraception she caught an infection on her finger and is currently taking amoxicillin with clavulanic acid. The pharmacist said it would be best to not have unprotected intercourse while on this medication even tho she has the implant was wondering is someone could clear this up seeing nothing we found states it would stop the implant from working.

Avatar f tn Had a stroke at 9 months old. After a year of being on phenobarbital his neurologist took him off due to his EEG coming back normal. Now almost 4 years later he is having seizures again. We are now on the 3rd different medication. So far I am having luck with this medication. He was also on Tregratol and it was making him pee and #2 himself. Now he is on Leveitiracetam 100mg/ML. I believe it is working, but so hard to tell.
Avatar n tn Is anybody here taking the new Dilantin? Are you having any problems with it?
Avatar f tn also found this. Controversy In some instances, a "detox" or other inpatient facility will take a person off a benzodiazepine "cold turkey" — replacing it with a short, one- to two-week taper of phenobarbital (a barbiturate) to prevent seizures. Most physicians and medical authorities agree, in the majority of cases, a slow taper is preferred to a rapid taper or "cold turkey" withdrawal from a benzodiazepine.
673183 tn?1232732878 Anyone have any info on phenobarb?I have a friend who wants to experiement with it and I dont really know anything about it. Avatar n tn 3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses. And told him to take 400mgs. today. I have a call in to our family Dr. and waiting for a return. We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.
Avatar n tn My husband was recently diagosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. The neurosurgeon put him on Dilantin "for life." He isn't even going to check blood levels. My husband has not had any seizures. Does this seem appropriate?
Avatar f tn Dilantin Withdrawal Symptoms The most significant Dilantin withdrawal symptom is a seizure. Suddenly stopping Dilantin can increase your risk of seizures These seizures can be especially severe and very difficult to control. Anxiety, sleeplessness, feeling cold, anger, seeing dead people in sleep, nausea, little appetite, shakineness are usually not due to the withdrawl of dilantin.Reduce your dose gradually to avoid seizures. Avatar f tn I am 60 and was diagnosed with complex partial seizures when I was 42. An MRI at that time showed an old brain injury in the left temporal lobe (probably due to a car accident when I was 18). At the time of diagnosis, I was starting to go through menopause. It took some time to become stable on Dilantin (generic) at 450 mg and I had a testing level of about 12-14 for years. Since last August I have had two surgeries, including a total hysterectomy. In October 2008 my Dilantin level was 19.

542332 tn?1214592336 My surgeon has my switching from Gabapentin to Dilantin, by early this week I should be solely on 400 to 500 MG of dilantin per day however it is doubtful if the meds will fully control the pain so then my only real option is an injection which may cause permanent facial numbness. I would like to know if anyone else has had to deal with recurrent trigeminal neuralgia and if so what was your outcome?
1252074 tn?1271541709 Also, some of the symptoms I have, I had before I was placed on Dilantin, and he just ignored that. Keeps wanting to blame everyone of my symptoms on the Dilantin Therapy. I called my primary care physician office and asked them to get me a referral to the MSU neurology clinic. I just don't feel comfortable about this medication change, and I don't feel that it's just the "dilantin" that's causing all of my ailments.
