Common Questions and Answers about Dilantin off label uses

dilantin

Avatar f tn After reviewing the medications I was already taking (to avoid any conflicts) she recommended Lamotrigine for my intense anxiety. I am VERY familiar with off-label drug uses, but I can find no information re: the use of this drug for my situation. It is a drug used for bi-polar disorder and seizures. I thought that Atavan would be the drug of choice, and after reading more about Lamotrigine, I have become actually quite shocked about this recommendation.
Avatar n tn Though there is a good theoretical basis for the use of arimidex on endometriosis, I believe that this is still an off-label indication for the drug and the clinical basis for its use is still from phase II clinical trials (studies with still low number of patients). Until such time that the indication of endometriosis can be demonstrated in large phase III clinical trials, the use of arimidex for endometriosis is still controversial.
100019 tn?1335919717 For genotype 1 patients who cannot take interferon, the panel recommends sofosbuvir plus the HCV protease inhibitor simeprevir (Olysio), with or without ribavirin, again for 12 weeks. This off-label regimen has not been through full Phase 3 testing, but performed very well in the Phase 2 COSMOS trial.
Avatar n tn Did your doctor prescribe it to you for this? If not, STOP right now...'experimenting' with prescription medications, which are extremely addictive can NEVER have good outcomes.
Avatar f tn They all have reported feeling better daily - this off label approach is a God Send! Now I will finish out the 12 weeks - they will do the viral load test again at that time and then 12 weeks post treatment test again to declare me officially SVR!!! NO HORRIBLE INTERFERON OR RIBAVARIN THIS TIME FOR ME!!
1635208 tn?1300807160 Hi welcome to the Hepatitis C community Olysio per the prescribing information sheet is intended to be used with interferon and Ribavirin. The same applies to Sovaldi. Per prescription they are not used together. However there have been clinical trials using them together "off label" and they have been shown to be highly effective when used together. You can web search for Cosmos clinical trial cohort 1 and cohort 2 to see study results.
1165078 tn?1338655745 s cuz Dilantin made them have to increase the synthroid, as well as Dilantin helps keep ya skinny I guess.. funny though.. I was on Dilantin long b4 the hypo thyroid med, and it wasn't untill I got put on Synthroid that I lost the xtra weight.. tired all the time, and hungry..
1924139 tn?1322798705 From my experience no but people do grow out of it if they are lucky enough our healed from it. I was on Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Lamictal three years ago. My Dr took me off of Dilantin and no more problems. I was on Dilantin over twenty years and i was scared. Let me know what happens because depending on your dosage you would be off of it or almost by now. I wish you the best.
Avatar f tn my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly. my neuro told me dilantin does slow your thinking and leaves you in a fog.
Avatar f tn He had a seizure yesterday after taking 12 50mg tablets in a 4 hour period. The doctors now have him on Dilantin, an anti-seizure medication and have scheduled an MRI & EEG. Before this episode he was taking up to 20 50mg tablets a day and is experiencing withdrawl. I want to get him into a detox program eventually, but would like to wait to find out the results of the MRI/EGG first. Can anyone suggest a safe way to 'step down' from this?
Avatar m tn They said she was having seizures based on her low Dilantin levels. The gave her two injections of Dilantin, she seemed fine and they sent her home. Now she seems fine again, although a little weak, dizzy, and tired, but pretty good for having three back to back episodes. We went to a follow up appointment with her general doctor on Monday. He again insisted it was related to her cholesterol.
Avatar f tn I am 44, and have been on dilantin name brand, the generic didnt work, for about 11yrs as adult and was on it for 5 yrs as a child(my stepmom took me off of it thinking i didnt need it).
Avatar n tn Is anybody here taking the new Dilantin? Are you having any problems with it?
Avatar m tn Hi everyone, I'm new to this community. My neurologist just informed me that Osteoporosis and shrinkage of the Cerebellum are very serious side effects for long term users of Dilantin. Does anyone know more about this? I've been taking 500mg of Dilantin for over 30 years since I was a teenager, and now I'm terribly worried. Not one of the neurologists had mentioned anything about this over the years, and now at 46, I've learned that I may have severe osteoporosis.
Avatar f tn RIGHT NOW I HAVE STOPPED TAPERING MYSELF OFF OF ANY OTHER MEDICATION OTHER THAN THIS DILANTIN, BECAUSE I KNOW I CAN HAVE SEIZURES. ARE YOU CERTAIN THIS DILANTIN WOULD NOT CAUSE THESE OTHER SIDE EFFECTS GIVEN WHAT YOU NOW KNOW I HAVE JUST TOLD YOU?
Avatar m tn I took Dilantin for a very brief period of time and was quite happy to get off of it. Right now I am actually on Keppra and Topamax and they have both kept me seizure free for over 3+ years and I have no side effects. My memory isn't that great but I'm not sure I can blame the drugs. The two of those as a combo, for me, are wonderful!
Avatar n tn I had a craniotomy in March due to an acute subdural hematoma (slip & fall). All the stars were aligned and I was able to receive medical care pretty quickly. Apparently, I am quite lucky to be here, and my neurosurgeon has my undying love! That being said, there are a few questions I had that I didn't think to ask him during my last visit, and my next one isn't for weeks. He has me weaning off the Dilantin (hooray-that's nasty stuff!).
Avatar n tn My husband was recently diagosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. The neurosurgeon put him on Dilantin "for life." He isn't even going to check blood levels. My husband has not had any seizures. Does this seem appropriate?
327385 tn?1378360731 i had a pituitary tumor and was told dilantin will mess with labs. im hoping to get off dilantin completly in a couple months.
508033 tn?1211889477 Then the next thing he said to me is we have to get you off of dilantin he said it was eating up part of my brain. (thats called cerebllar atrophy) So he took me off of dilantin and put me of KEPPRA, he had to experment with the levels but the level I'm on now is 500mg twice a day. And I'm also on diamox and tegertol..........Good Luck just don't go back on dilantin.
Avatar f tn The problem with that is there are few anticonvulsants that are easy on the liver and you have to be weaned off the Dilantin due to dependency. I am worried about my son's safety and pray for him continuously. He is eight hours away and I feel very lost. Good luck to you Cala.
Avatar f tn Definitely make an appt with your neuro! You don't mention how long it's been since you last saw the neuro. I was on Dilantin for 32 yrs.I actually had not seen a neuro for some yrs;my MD prescribed it along with other meds. But then when I started seeing a neuro for a different issue,he noticed the length of time I'd been on Dilantin. He talked to me about changing meds.He let me know it wouldn't be easy.
506273 tn?1260138781 Can I expect to be taken off dilantin or will I have to wean off of it? Is there anything other then the meds that can cause the whole brain to seize like that?
1252074 tn?1271541709 Not exactly sure what to think of my neurologist yet. He was impressed that I had a symptom list and a timeline all printed out for him plus all of the current labs I've had, etc. Said he wished more of his patients did that, would reduce a lot his doing repeat tests. Right now he's more concerned with my seizures and the up and down of the Dilantin level that I've had going on.
Avatar f tn My doctor had me trying to wean off too quickly, so I am now using the Point of Return (Label Me Sane) protocol, which is a very slow taper of 5% per week. It also uses very good supplements to get you feeling normal before they even allow you to start the taper. The testimonials are extremely positive. Check out the Label Me Sane website if you want more information, and good luck to you. These meds are indeed terrible things.
7486852 tn?1410352184 So I had my follow up with my neurologist yesterday and my E.E.G. was abnormal, and he decided I am starting lamictal instead of depakote.
1028452 tn?1537448484 Is neuropathic because a nerve compression or damage problem has not been found, or is cannabis like the off-label uses for pure anti-depressants? "The patient stopped complaining, so it works!" Despite the patient being too doped out to remember pains, difficulties, or otherwise have a coherant thought... Awaiting the pitchforks and torches.
