My husband was recently diagosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. The neurosurgeon put him on Dilantin "for life." He isn't even going to check blood levels. My husband has not had any seizures. Does this seem appropriate?

3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses. And told him to take 400mgs. today. I have a call in to our family Dr. and waiting for a return. We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.

Also given to resume medications other medication except Dilantin. Given Vitamin B-Complex, Vit C, Nootropil 800mg Piracetam, Cavinton Vinpocetine 5mg, Duxaril (Almitrine Raubasine). Somemore these medication being given for 3 months. We will continue to follow up with our neurosurgeon, however would still appreciate any comment/your opinions: 1. could it possible above symptoms remains due to remaining ¼ blood clot at that area ?

My husband has is dilantin very low and I was wondering if he can increase his medication to 200 mg.I was also wondering why does that keep happening and what is the side effects for the dilantin.

My neurologist just informed me that Osteoporosis and shrinkage of the Cerebellum are very serious side effects for long term users of Dilantin. Does anyone know more about this? I've been taking 500mg of Dilantin for over 30 years since I was a teenager, and now I'm terribly worried. Not one of the neurologists had mentioned anything about this over the years, and now at 46, I've learned that I may have severe osteoporosis.

We rushed her to emergency, but it took about ten minutes to get there and another ten for them to treat her symptoms before she stopped. She did not have a fever. She was given ativan and dilantin intravenously at this time. A CT scan returned negative. The next morning she was given 150 mg of dilantin and walked like a drunken sailor for the rest of the day (she weighs 20kg). We are waiting for an EEG and, in the meantime she has been prescribed phenobarbitol. This worries me.

Does anyone know what can cause Dilantin levels to be too low after taking correct dosage? My levels have been around 3.2 and I take the correct dosage my doctor prescribed of 400 MG a day. 200 in the morning and 200 at night. My doctor thinks I am not taking my Dilantin and I cannot convince him otherwise!!! I don't know what to do or where to find any information about it. Would appreciate any information, please.

The hospital noticed her Dilantin levels were low, and put her on an IV of Dilantin. The next day she seem fine. They discharged her. The hospital never really diagnosed her, but her general doctor said it was a stroke based on high cholesterol, even thought no stroke showed in the MRI. She was weak for about a week afterward, but pretty much fully recovered. This past week, she started feeling dizzy again.

can 20 years on dilantin after one seizure, then a stroke with no speech, cause terrible sideeffects?

From my experience no but people do grow out of it if they are lucky enough our healed from it. I was on Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Lamictal three years ago. My Dr took me off of Dilantin and no more problems. I was on Dilantin over twenty years and i was scared. Let me know what happens because depending on your dosage you would be off of it or almost by now. I wish you the best.

My surgeon has my switching from Gabapentin to Dilantin, by early this week I should be solely on 400 to 500 MG of dilantin per day however it is doubtful if the meds will fully control the pain so then my only real option is an injection which may cause permanent facial numbness. I would like to know if anyone else has had to deal with recurrent trigeminal neuralgia and if so what was your outcome?
