MY PSYCHIATRIST HAS TRIED EVERY MED YOU CAN POSSIBLY THINK OF FOR THIS INSOMNIA, NOTHING WORKS. MY DEPRESSION IS NOW GONE, BUT RIGHT NOW I AM IN A MESS BECAUSE I HAVE SLOWLY BEEN TAPERING MYSELF OF THE CLONZEPAN AT THE RATE OF 1/2 TAB PER MONTH. I HAVE BEEN ON THIS TERRIBLE DRUG SINCE 1989, WHEN I HAD A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN. RIGHT NOW I HAVE STOPPED TAPERING MYSELF OFF OF ANY OTHER MEDICATION OTHER THAN THIS DILANTIN, BECAUSE I KNOW I CAN HAVE SEIZURES.
I've been taking Dilantin for sleep seizures for 43 years. No problems before, but recently I'm having trouble making any decisions and I'm getting scatter-brained. What are the long-term effects of Dilantin?
I started having seizures when I was 12 yrs. and they put me on dilantin and other meds. they never got under control so good until I went to a new doctor (because I moved) and at that time I was about 38, and the doctor did a MRI and other test. He then said to me the first thing we have to do is get you off of dilantin. He showed me that that pill was eating up half of my brain (it is called cerebellar atrophy). He slowly put me on different levels of Keppra and I haven't been better.
I have no idea if you can. I really think this is a question for your doctor.
Iam male and I have been experienceing sexual Dysfunction for quite sometime now. I take valproic acid and dilantin to control my epilepsy. My sexual desire remains but my ability to act on it is nil. My wife deserves better than Iam currently able to give her. I was wondering if there is something that I could do or take that would remedy this situation. I have tried many enhancers but to no avail. I would welcome any suggestions or advice. Thankyou.
i have been on dilantin for over 25 years . i to have very bad mood swings and i just cant take any stress at all . my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly.
I was on Dilantin for many of my childhood years and it really wrecked my teeth!! Made the gums grow so huge, pushing my teeth so far out of line that some got removed. When I stopped taking Dilantin, my gums dropped down to the proper size, but it left my teeth sticking up, exposing the roots!
Too often, doctors don't tell you about the side effects that you'll have to live with! They're only there to find something to control the seizures.
3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses.
And told him to take 400mgs. today.
I have a call in to our family Dr. and waiting for a return.
We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.

My husband was recently diagosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. The neurosurgeon put him on Dilantin "for life." He isn't even going to check blood levels. My husband has not had any seizures. Does this seem appropriate?
how was dilantin for you re: side effects and adjusting to it? How old were you when you began dilantin. My daughter is having a hard time with keppra. I've been wondering about adding antidepressents to her regiments if the doctor says it's OK. Very tough to know what to do with our new diagnosis of generalized seizure disorder. She's 20.
I have a TSH of 0.24 and T4 of 1.04. I have been on Dilantin for 30 years. I have been on Thyroid replacement therapy for 18 years with monthly injection of B12. I have had extreme fatigue and chest pains. Seeing neurologist for medicine change and have be referred to endocrinologist. How concerned should I be? What tests should be given? Is this my pituitary gland?
My husband also suffers from epilepsy and hep c. He was on dilantin for years until the past 3 maybe yrs and then went on Topamax.
The Topamax worked well the first two years but he did have problems with his memory. Would wake up in the middle of the night not remembering where he was working and what day it was. After a few minutes of reminding him (he would wake me up, which I didn't mind at all) he would remember.
