9 years later, I was finishing my PhD, and felt as though might have another stroke, visual and other problems. Local doctors or hospital did not check dilantin levels- thought I had mental problems. Took them 20months after many more drugs to discontinue the dilantin.

They said she was having seizures based on her low Dilantin levels. The gave her two injections of Dilantin, she seemed fine and they sent her home. Now she seems fine again, although a little weak, dizzy, and tired, but pretty good for having three back to back episodes. We went to a follow up appointment with her general doctor on Monday. He again insisted it was related to her cholesterol.

after my crainotomy i had one and got such a bad headache and throwing up, last nite the same headache . will i get bad headaches after my seizures now?

Maybe it was the type of stroke that i had that made the doctor and my therapist disallow me from driving. But now i have been through therapy and I have started on more physical therapy to help me out with diabitis. thanks for your resonse.

I agree with the doctors as the time taken for recovery may be in months or even years. But preventing malnutrition and removal of the cause of stroke helps in quick recovery. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. i started taking dilantin and im late for my period almost 4 weeks.

I have a TSH of 0.24 and T4 of 1.04. I have been on Dilantin for 30 years. I have been on Thyroid replacement therapy for 18 years with monthly injection of B12. I have had extreme fatigue and chest pains. Seeing neurologist for medicine change and have be referred to endocrinologist. How concerned should I be? What tests should be given? Is this my pituitary gland?

My doctor wanted me to start with the Dilantin first, but then I read that bone-thinning and excess facial hair can be the some of the side effects. (So, I'm going with Tegretol.) I had no idea about the risk of leukemia! Are you okay?

my dad was taken off plavix due to a bad bladder infections which caused some bleeding. He was taken off and withing a month and a half had a min-Tia-stroke-episode. He's back on it...Thank God he's doing better.

The center is focusing on feedings and pain control. She is on morphine, fentanyl path and klonipan as well as Dilantin. She still twitches. I am thinking about calling Hospice. does she have a chance of recovering??? I don't want to be the voice of gloom in the family but I want to know when to take off work and spend more time with her. I would recommend consulting your Neurologist. Together, you and your Neurologist can weigh the pros and cons of taking Dilantin or possibly another medication.

my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly. my neuro told me dilantin does slow your thinking and leaves you in a fog.

I'm sorry to hear this! You are so young to have a stroke. I live in Ann Arbor and have just been referred the U of M. Did they put you on anything so you wouldn't have another one? so sorry!

Right now I am actually on Keppra and Topamax and they have both kept me seizure free for over 3+ years and I have no side effects. My memory isn't that great but I'm not sure I can blame the drugs. The two of those as a combo, for me, are wonderful!

I took 2 old, and 1 new for about a month, then 2 new and 1 old, and am now on 3 new dilantin 100mg. every day. I have been on this for about 2 weeks, and I have not had any problem at all. I do feel kinda nervous about it, though, and never leave home without my medical card in my wallet. (something I never even had to think about with the old dilantin). How about you? 3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses. And told him to take 400mgs. today. From my experience no but people do grow out of it if they are lucky enough our healed from it. I was on Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Lamictal three years ago. My Dr took me off of Dilantin and no more problems. I was on Dilantin over twenty years and i was scared. Let me know what happens because depending on your dosage you would be off of it or almost by now. I wish you the best.

Akathesia is a standard side effect of anti-psychotics and it could be that as well and Cogentin is often used to treat it. Ask and make sure.

My neurosurgeon has me changing from neurontin to dilantin and I think the dilantin may be helping; my pain level has decreased yesterday and today. I will see him again on July 7 and hopefully I will be able to report a good response to the dilantin. If the drugs do not work then he wants to try injection of glycerol. I will post again after my next visit with my neurosurgeon.
