dilantin and lamictal

Was just interested if anyone has had to transition from Dilantin to Lamictal and if they have had any side affects

Does prednisone effect dilantin and lamictal levels? I've been on dilantin and lamictal for over 5 years for seizures. I'm being tested for autoimmune hepatitis, I just had a liver biopsy. I don't want to take a chance on having a seizure.

From my experience no but people do grow out of it if they are lucky enough our healed from it. I was on Dilantin, Phenobarbital and Lamictal three years ago. My Dr took me off of Dilantin and no more problems. I was on Dilantin over twenty years and i was scared. Let me know what happens because depending on your dosage you would be off of it or almost by now. I wish you the best.

I am 22 years old and I was diagnosed with epilepsy since I was about 5 years old. They told my mom I had 6 days to live when I was born because I had a tumor on my brain. I had brain surgery when I was a baby. Since then I've had 5 brain surgeries my last one was when I was 11 years old. I had a seizure on the operating table and was paralyzed on my right side. So whenever I have a seizure I go paralyzed on my right side and it takes me about 3 minutes to talk again.

I WAS ON LAMICTAL AND I HAD TO GET OF IT AND GO BACK TO DILANTIN A WAS PAYING 534.00 A MONTH. WHAT IS BAD IT WORKED VERY WELL FOR ME BUT COULD NOT NAFFORD IT.

Also, some of the symptoms I have, I had before I was placed on Dilantin, and he just ignored that. Keeps wanting to blame everyone of my symptoms on the Dilantin Therapy. I called my primary care physician office and asked them to get me a referral to the MSU neurology clinic. I just don't feel comfortable about this medication change, and I don't feel that it's just the "dilantin" that's causing all of my ailments.

16 years ago i had 2 ideopathic seizures.Had all the tests. Put on Dilantin. Inquired about the origin of my seizures with my neurologist. Told we would never know. Took meds religiously. No seizures for 16 years---until a couple of weeks ago. Had a grand mal, stopped breathing, rushed to hospital. Told to take more Dilantin[4200 mgs a week]. Had MRI---showed non specific white matter. Saw seizure specialist,she suggested cortical dysplasia. Is this epilepsy? How unusual is my case?

I recently started taking a cocktail of 3 AEDs---Dilantin,Lamictal,and Keppra.I've noticed that recently my urine has a very strong and foul odor.Does anyone know why? Has anyone else noticed a similar side effect? Is this something to be alarmed at?

I am going to request another bood test like you said to see if was the ibuprofen. Dilantin I rake for seizures and may be time I wean off of it and rely on Lamictal. Thanks for your reply.

My neurologist just informed me that Osteoporosis and shrinkage of the Cerebellum are very serious side effects for long term users of Dilantin. Does anyone know more about this? I've been taking 500mg of Dilantin for over 30 years since I was a teenager, and now I'm terribly worried. Not one of the neurologists had mentioned anything about this over the years, and now at 46, I've learned that I may have severe osteoporosis.

I have been going through seizures since I was 12yrs. and now I'm 54. At first they were bad seizures and my neur. but me on dilantin and other meds. and then as I was growing up they would be daily and then they experment with my med levels and they got my seizures down to a couple a week. When I was about 34 I moved and had to go to another neur. and he took all kinds of test and a MRI.

My new neurologist wants me to try depakote after keppra, dilantin, and dilantin and topamax together have failed. They did not control my seizures and I had horrible side effects. I have been using my medical marijuana which my neurologist never had anything bad to say about it just wants me to try another pill as well. I'm worried about the side effects and whether they will work when these others haven't..

t witness but the symptoms were that of a seizure according to the Doctor who saw him in the hospital (he had a fall at the time and had superficial facial wounds) The doctor put him on dilantin and they did an EEG. Then he was taken off the dilantin because the EEG didn't show anythin g. A month later in the night he had two grand mal seizures and at that time a full workup was done at the hospital.

i say my new neoro today and he wanted me to look at 3 other meds(lamictal, topomax, and trileptal) and they all have just as bad or more side effects including severe acne. ive been trying to ghave a good attitude but its starting to get to me and it has almost eliminated my social life. i dont care what ppl think. acne does make a difference and i dont think a good looking girl would like me with my face all messed up.

I take Dilantin for the grand maul and Lyrica for the petite maul now but, I am wondering if there is a medication that would work for both?

The neurologist figured the Topamax just was not working and then put him on Keppra. (He was still taking 1 dilantin and weaned off that dilantin just before going on Keppra) I had him wean off the Topamax really slow, much slower than the neurologist wanted at first but neuro. gave us his ok to wean off slow. He also weaned on Keppra at a slow dosage. The Keppra worked ok and then he had a few other seizures, one he actually ended up w/ a compression fracture in his back.

m also taking Valproic Acid (2500 mg/ day), Lamictal (300 mg/ day) and Dilantin (500 mg/day) for seizures. All my other blood tests are in range. Can anyone tell me if this is a dangerously high level, i.e., liver or kidney damaging?

My daughter has concentration problems and some memory loss on her medications but finds those side effects tolerable in comparison to cycling. She takes Lithium 1200 mg (split 600am/900pm), Lamictal 100pm and Adderall XR 10mg AM. She also takes a multivitamin, calcium, biotin, birth control, and zantac. She was on Geodon 80 mg (gained 30lbs and no improvement) and zoloft 50mg... with all the other stuff she was on. That was from August until mid December.

The Lamitctal gives me bad mood swing I snap into a rage very quick. Someone can look at me wrong and I turn on them and scream and yell for no good reason and the next minute I'm the happy normal person I am.

I have a TSH of 0.24 and T4 of 1.04. I have been on Dilantin for 30 years. I have been on Thyroid replacement therapy for 18 years with monthly injection of B12. I have had extreme fatigue and chest pains. Seeing neurologist for medicine change and have be referred to endocrinologist. How concerned should I be? What tests should be given? Is this my pituitary gland?

I appreciate it. I have been on depakote, topamax, lamotrigine, zonegran, gabepentin, lamictal, and keppra. Most of them make me so dopey and forgetful that working is definately a challenge. But...no work...no insurance...no medical care. What a nasty circle. I am allergic to the zonegran, blisters in my mouth etc. The others caused severe leg pain, eye pain, anorexia, hairloss, and I suppose i could go on. But you get the picture.

My doctor wanted me to start with the Dilantin first, but then I read that bone-thinning and excess facial hair can be the some of the side effects. (So, I'm going with Tegretol.) I had no idea about the risk of leukemia! Are you okay?

I would recommend consulting your Neurologist. Together, you and your Neurologist can weigh the pros and cons of taking Dilantin or possibly another medication.

Neurologists can only guess on what drug will work and its up to you to give him/her good feedback. When I was going to grammar school and high school I was taking Dilantin and phenobarbital and most days I was not totally myself. It was hard to sit in class and not sleep. I found myself drinking coffee to stay awake which of course is not an ideal thing. Today, we have drugs that can do the job and not place us in some walking coma.
