my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly. my neuro told me dilantin does slow your thinking and leaves you in a fog.
I took 2 old, and 1 new for about a month, then 2 new and 1 old, and am now on 3 new dilantin 100mg. every day. I have been on this for about 2 weeks, and I have not had any problem at all. I do feel kinda nervous about it, though, and never leave home without my medical card in my wallet. (something I never even had to think about with the old dilantin). How about you? Are you on the new capsules? If so, how are you doing?
Iam male and I have been experienceing sexual Dysfunction for quite sometime now. I take valproic acid and dilantin to control my epilepsy. My sexual desire remains but my ability to act on it is nil. My wife deserves better than Iam currently able to give her. I was wondering if there is something that I could do or take that would remedy this situation. I have tried many enhancers but to no avail. I would welcome any suggestions or advice. Thankyou.
3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses.
And told him to take 400mgs. today.

We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.

I know how frustrating that can be because I have gone to the dr for thyroid/adrenal problems and the dr told me, she did not know what else to do. So I can understand completely what you are going through here.
I guess an option is to switch over to another med that your tribe will supply to see if that will take care of the problem. When they change meds, they should slowly add in the new med, and then when it has reached a therapeutic level, start discontinuing the old one.

I have a TSH of 0.24 and T4 of 1.04. I have been on Dilantin for 30 years. I have been on Thyroid replacement therapy for 18 years with monthly injection of B12. Is this my pituitary gland?
if the levels are high, in the toxic range, and then your dose is cut down and your episodes stop, then it could be the dilantin. But non-toxic (normal) dilantin levels to my knowledge do not cause sleep attacks.
If you are suffering from sleep attacks, one possibility is a sleep disorder. Sleep apnea, which is due to increased resistance in your airway during sleep, can lead to poor ventilation.
I have a neighbor that was on it too long and she started having seizures more frequently and was hospitalized.They took her Dilantin level and accused her of not taking her meds.But it had started leaking into other places.They found that out while she was still in the hospital.
Now for my own experience.I wasn't always monitored properly;it was always easier to just dispense the med.
They said she was having seizures based on her low Dilantin levels. The gave her two injections of Dilantin, she seemed fine and they sent her home.
Now she seems fine again, although a little weak, dizzy, and tired, but pretty good for having three back to back episodes. We went to a follow up appointment with her general doctor on Monday. He again insisted it was related to her cholesterol.

Stopping Dilantin quickly is not recommended. Although Dilantin is not addicting and is not likely to be abused, stopping it too quickly can cause seizures to worsen.
Dilantin Withdrawal Symptoms
The most significant Dilantin withdrawal symptom is a seizure. Suddenly stopping Dilantin can increase your risk of seizures These seizures can be especially severe and very difficult to control.
Had siezures once per week at night and was semi aware of seizure as it started, then unconcious and would wake up breathing rapidly and confused. Have been on dilantin since then and it has controlled seizures for over 30 years.
Over the yaers I would have problems with severe muscle contortions and spasms of my right leg. Nearly 100% of the time it would bother me at night only, last for about a week as it tapered off.This would happen at most once a year.
