Common Questions and Answers about Digoxin dose in children

Avatar f tn That's great to hear. I was curious what they chose Digoxin. That is a very, very old drug. I took it in 1957 when I had my first episode of SVT. For me, it did little to stop them. There are so many newer, frontline drugs for the treatment of SVT that don't have the unwanted side effects that digitalis based drugs include. It would be interesting to hear their reasoning for using it. There is something that you should ask you physician. Digoxin has a very long half life.
Avatar m tn he has been on the max dose of digoxin for the last 8 or 9 months with little effect. his doctor has suggested doing a catheter ablation on him, given his wieght of over 15 kilos. the other consideration is the number of times he has been in the e.r and p.i.c.u and the heart rate of 250 bpm and higher when in svt. should we consider rfa at this time? Avatar f tn They had given him a pretty large dose of it while in the ER and he took 3 doses of the pill...he started feeling pretty bad. He went to his regular cardiologist today and he ran a blood test to check for toxicity and took him off of it. It sounds like a very nasty drug...thanks for the info. I can't understand why he was put on it. He has had a heart attack and bypass surgery but I don't think that would make digoxin the only alternative with so many other drugs out there.
Avatar n tn my dad was taken off of it because his rate dropped below 60 beats and was causing him to be knocked out for most of the day when he went off of it his symptoms improved now its been 2 weeks and he is showing signs of loss of appitite, sleepiness, slow in speech, stomach acid, nasea Can the digoxin be retintroduced without any big adjustment to his chemistry?
Avatar n tn I am wondering if you are uneasy about taking digoxin. If so, I would ask you cardio if you can get by with just the TOPROL XL. Digoxin, xanax, toprol xl, and lisinoprol seems like a lot of stuff to be taking. I am a runner and only take TOPROL XL 12.5mg. This knocks out my extra beats and really slows my heart down. A little seems to go a long way for me.
Avatar n tn I hope you are taking digitalis glycosides (digoxin) as they play an important role apart from the other therapies in improving the EF. I sincerely hope that helps. Please do keep me posted. Kind regards.
Avatar m tn My elderly mom has been having some pretty severe episodes of anxiety/confusion over the past couple of weeks. We've initiated contact with her doctors who are doing their thing, but of course nothing moves as fast as we'd like in situations like this. Her life is pretty much consistent every single day, same habits, same foods, same tv shows, etc. These episodes have been happening every *second* day, in mid afternoon.
4356842 tn?1353312209 Now, 20 years later and dealing with peri menopause I have had to up the dose to 1/2 in am and 1/2 in pm but it is still a low dose. I know a lot of people say go with the ablation because you don't want to be on drugs at your young age but it worked for me. However I would have never taken Digoxin for svt.
471161 tn?1317190950 ve taken Toprol and Metoprolol in medium to high dose and have never had a chocking sensation. I do not know anything about Digoxin. If the chocking has not stopped with your discontinuation of Metoprolol I'd say it has/had nothing to do with the chocking.
2021358 tn?1328748117 Beacuse I also have heart problems, the neurologist and cardiologist got together and prescribed DIGOXIN. Altho I have not see anything on the INET about the use of digoxin in auto neuropathy, I don't know why not. It made a tremendous difference in my pulse, bp, and even in decreasing stomache nausea and constipation (stomache is also controlled by vagal nerve). I felt almost normal. Digoxin is the only drug I know of on the market which strengthens the vagal nerve.
Avatar n tn My reduced pulse is associated with dizziness and low BP (100/70), all happening together in last 7-10 days. Since 2007 my ACE-I dose has come down from 12.5 to 2.5 to keep my BP at 110/70. For last two days I have stopped ACE-I just to make sure my BP does not fall below 100/70. From your reply it sounds all is well except that I need to adjust my medicines. I was concerned that low pulse/BP are danger signs, in heart parients. I did not know that digoxin also effects pulse.
Avatar f tn Diastolic blood pressure significantly decreased and systolic blood pressure significantly increased during overnight sleep in the digoxin phase .Heart rate decreased in the overnight sleeping phase . Digoxin significantly decreases diastolic blood pressure during overnight sleep in patients with congestive heart failure. This effect is likely to be caused by reduction of sympathetic activity or increase of parasympathetic activity.
Avatar n tn The link below your post goes to a doctor's explanation where he states digoxin is used to treat irregular heartbeats. I was on digoxin for a few months following my congested heart failue event. It is my understanding the medication is used to increase contractility of the pumping chambers. My medication for stablizing heart rate is a beta blocker (coreg) and an ACE inhibitor. My research: "Digoxin is contraindicated in patients with ventricular fibrillation.
Avatar n tn I took Digoxin for a number of years in reponse to an atrial fibrillation event. My new physician did not feel I needed to be on it any longer. What are the side effects of discontinuing this medication? I have been off it for several months and some odd changes in my body.
304450 tn?1192686333 Look up coq10 on the internet and maybe try this i just started taking it and i go back on may to get another echo my ef was down to 25% in june of 2007 now back in jan it was up to 45% then I heard of coq10 so hopfully it will help even more. I'm also 28 so i know what your dealing with so what is your ef?
Avatar m tn your cardiologist put you on Metoprolol and Digoxin. The latter drug is very old. I took it back in 1957 when my SVT first appeared. It's toxic and can buildup in you body. I'd ask with all of the possible anti-arrhythmic drugs available, why were you put on Digoxin? Question: What strength Metoprolol were you prescribed? When you get these episodes, there are several ways that you can convert them on your own. Has anyone shown you how to perform Valsalva?
Avatar f tn I received a letter in the mail from the pharmaceutical company stating they accidentally put a double dose of the medication digoxin I was taking since my surgery because of an irregular heartbeat. I feel that this is the reason I now need these valves replaced but all the doctors feel differently. I would like to know if anyone has had 3 valves replaced at one time? I had rheumatic fever when I was young and that's why I needed the valves replaced the first time.
Avatar f tn A comparison of verapamil, propranolol and digoxin showed equivalent efficacy in a small group of patients. However, in general calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers are preferred to digoxin. Digoxin has been around for a long time! I used Digoxin over 50 years ago for my PSVT, and my recollection was that it did little to prevent episodes. There are so many newer drugs now that are far more effective.
Avatar f tn Digoxin and Toprol act in different ways and do not induce the same effects. I have atrial fib and was prescribed amioderone.
Avatar f tn Diagnosed by tilt table with P.O.T.S. in 2004, I suspect I have that form of P.O.T.S. (hyperadrenergic) due to various abnormal catecholamine type numbers in a number of lab tests. Medicines that were tried and discontinued for either side effects or not helping- lopressor, florinef, midodrine, and verapamil. Currently, I am not being treated by any physician for my P.O.T.S..
Avatar f tn High ventricular rate leads to insufficient diastolic filling time. Digoxin slows down the conduction in the AV node and increases its refractory period, and it can reduce the ventricular rate. The arrhythmia itself is not affected, but the pumping function of the heart improves by improved filling. The use of digoxin in heart problems during sinus rhythm was once standard.
Avatar f tn i hev a question concerning digoxin....wat is its effect in the body. I mean its pharmacokinetic effects. i am having a hard time searching the net for it...
Avatar m tn My doctor was very surprised because he had never seen atrial fibrillation in a young adult. My doctor prescribed digoxin and my heart rhythm returned to normal. About six months ago I moved to a different state. I recently went to a new doctor to have my digoxin levels checked and he noticed that my afib had returned. He was concerned because digoxin would not have been his choice of treatment and he said I should have also been taking aspirin or a blood thinner.
Avatar f tn m sure this is a long shot, but I know Digoxin can help with tissue perfusion as it helps with heart function. Her dose of Dig. was recently cut in half as they felt her heart was doing better, it was shortly after this decrease that I've noticed the increase in discoloration. Could this be related?
Avatar n tn I was atenolol prior to my first pregnancy (in the 80's) and my doctor switched me to digoxin once I became pregnant, as he felt if was a better choice during pregnancy. Since there wasn't internet then, I guess I should look these up and see how these two drugs compare to one another during pregnancy :).
