Common Questions and Answers about Digoxin and cardioversion

Avatar f tn t like that, so he prescribed 100mg Toprol in the morning (that was the only thing I was taking for heart rate after the cardioversion) to that he added the digoxin at noon and Toprol XR 50 mg (half a pill) in the evening. And he also told me to have the ablation to cure the flutter. My concern is that my rate even on all those meds is much higher than it was when j first had the procedure. It is slowly but surely climbing, from 91bpm yesterday at the ER to now 98bpm. Is that normal?
Avatar n tn I have undergone an unsuccessful cardioversion and for the past 2 years I have been prescribed atenolol, flecainide and now digoxin to help control my af. None of these drugs seem to have an effect on my af. Can you please advise me if there ios a cure for af? Jonser This discussion is related to Ventrical.
Avatar m tn My doctor was very surprised because he had never seen atrial fibrillation in a young adult. My doctor prescribed digoxin and my heart rhythm returned to normal. About six months ago I moved to a different state. I recently went to a new doctor to have my digoxin levels checked and he noticed that my afib had returned. He was concerned because digoxin would not have been his choice of treatment and he said I should have also been taking aspirin or a blood thinner.
Avatar n tn I am on Crestor, Atenolol, Cartia and Digoxin and Synthroid. I had Tachicardia and Atrial Fib. I have symptoms of shortness of breath, a dry cough, extreme fatigue, short term memory loss, extreme joint pain and stiffness, poor balance, weakness at times, vision gets dark at times, neck and throat soreness. I'm going to my doctor because I can't function with these symptoms. Can you tell me which meds can cause this and what other meds I could take. Thank you.
Avatar m tn About 6 weeks ago I got AF with an erratic heart rate between 80 and 140. My cardiologist put me on Carvedilol beta blocker and Digoxin, and two weeks ago I went onto Warfarin in prep for an electric cardioversion. Three days ago I had the cardioversion, but reverted back to AF last night. My cardiologist did say that we would "give it one try only and if I reverted back quickly then that is what my body wants to do and I would have to live with it".
Avatar f tn I am not allowed to increase the dose. Calcium channel blockers and many betablockers are not suitable for me. Someone suggested Digoxin to me, but hyperparathyroidism prevents its use. I don't know how to treat my abnormal rhythm.
Avatar m tn my husband has been diagnosed with A-Fib and heart failure, today he has not been feeling well is heart rate is goining up and down from 45 to 118 he is feeling weak and fatigued. His ejection faction is 30 he is also a diabetic and is overweght. I don't know when I should make him go to the doctor or the hospital.
Avatar n tn developed high blood pressure and a fib after lost son in July. Tried cardioversion but did not work--was told only a 30% chance of success. Am on lisinopril for blood pressure-- for a fib--digoxin, tatzia xt and xarelto as blood thinner. Cardiologist said were other meds he could give me but side effects outweighed benefits and would not change meds unless had no other choice. I have a fib daily but not as strong as when started.
1569985 tn?1328247482 I have always thought of the PM as a last resort, came in for a cardioversion, and after just 2 days on oral meds, a staff doctor is pushing for a pacemaker. It had never been discussed with my electropysiologist. I was taken aback. My ep will be back tomorrow, so anxious to get his opinion - he's been my ep for 10 years. The lung surgery went well -- upper lobectomy - and I was recovering nicely when the afib appeared. Not unexpected, but I could have done without it.
Avatar m tn After the op. she was put on amiodarone, digoxin and furosemide. While the MVR appeared successful the maze did not kick in, experiencing irregular heartbeats cica 90 p.m. She then had cardioversion a few days ago; her heart rhythm appears to have regularised but her pulse rate has dropped to 42-46 p.m. and she has lost a lot ef energy. She has been taken off all medication except warfarin (5 mg pd) Where do we go from here?
Avatar m tn First post to this forum - and I promise future ones wont be this long:-) Just wanted to state medical situation and past current treatment before questions: My husband has A-fib and has been in chronic (a.k.a. "persistent" A-fib) since he was 36 (diagnosed and became persistent in 2000, oddly right after starting Atenolol for it - but told no connection to Atenolol -That he was probably already about to go into persistent AF at the time).
Avatar m tn How do you tell if Afib converted on its own or if the medication did the conversion or if the medication was causing the Afib? I have been to the Primary doctor and Emergency room both said I was not in afib currently. Another words, when do you know when to stop taking the medications? In Nov 2013, I have Aortic heart valve replacement and a maze procedure. My old cardiologist wanted to do a cardioversion but I didn't want it, so I had to change Cardiologist.
Avatar f tn Toprol and digoxin are not anti-arrythmics, altho they can both lower your heart rate and blood pressure, considered "rate control." I took beta blockers for 7 years and controlled my afib. Then when my afib got worse, I went on Norpace, which controlled it pretty well for about 3 years. Last summer I had chest surgery, which changed the whole picture and I've been in and out of the hospital with afib ever since.
Avatar f tn I had cardioversion on Feb 1st, 2007 and have no heart abnormalities for 25 months. I do have symptoms that are related to the side effects of medications that I am living with. Took me a month prior to cardioversion to get my blood numbers in the therapeutic range. I am a big believer in cardioversion. After waking up, I remember looking at the graph and seeing my heart in sinus rhythm. Sheer joy.
Avatar f tn I had high heart rates and low heart rates and pauses at night. I at first got atenolol and a calcium channel blocker and digoxin. I had to decrease the doses of the calcium blocker and digoxin and then stop taking them. During the six-month period I had infections, anitibiotics diarrhea, respiratory problems, gallstones, and then got symptoms of muscular dystonia (diagnosed later).
Avatar m tn ) Eventually switched Drs and new Dr added on 250 mcg of digoxin in addition to Atenolol and aspirin. At this point were were told (confirmed) that rate control was best option due to re-mapping caused by persistent AF for so many years now. After several years with the second Dr we switched due to to not being happy with him (never avaiblable, some questionable medicine change suggestions etc). Just met with new EP a couple of days ago. Highly recommended. Great hospital, really nice guy.
351404 tn?1299489130 It was decided to try a cardioversion and he had his sinus rhythm restored by this procedure on 1st May. Now some four weeks later, he again went into AF but just for 13 hours and then reverted to sinus spontaneously. We wonder how come this happened when it never once happened during those three years of AF. Is this unusual and what could he expect from now on? Since the permanent condition received no treatment other than anti-coagulation, will he now be treated as paroxysmal?
Avatar f tn My husband and I would like to start trying for a baby but i'm on Betablockers for a tachycardia that no-one can find a reason for! i'm only on 1.25mg of bisoprolol, and would like to know what risks there are. I'm currently on a waiting list to see cardiology and find out what their opinion is but would like a bit of advice.
Avatar n tn My father recenlty fell, fractured his hip and I have been getting contradicting information about digoxin, since he has low blood pressure and digoxin may not be safe for him.. Thank you This discussion is related to Dijoxin Level.
Avatar n tn I took Digoxin for a number of years in reponse to an atrial fibrillation event. My new physician did not feel I needed to be on it any longer. What are the side effects of discontinuing this medication? I have been off it for several months and some odd changes in my body.
Avatar f tn The valve has since been fixed but I am still In chronic fibrillation. It is being controlled with digoxin, metoprolol, and I also take coumadin and amiodarone. My concern is this: when I walk on the treadmill at 2.5 for thirty minutes my heart rate continues to stay at the resting rate of 80 - 90 beats per minute. Why is this? And is this bad?
351404 tn?1299489130 My husband was in permanent AFib for three years and was given a cardioversion at his own request on lst May this year. He is 78 years old and otherwise healthy and quite strong. This was successful and he has not reverted into AFib since (about four weeks now). My question is - knowing that about 40 percent only stay in sinus following this procedure, how long is the average time lapse if it isn't a success?
Avatar m tn My paroxysmal afib progressed to persistent over the past year but a cardioversion was never part of the treatment. Now I have just had my first PVI ablation and am 11 days into recovery from that. Today I am in NSR so that's good. One day at a time!
942410 tn?1274047074 You didn't identify how the cardioversion was accomplished, electric shock, or medications? In any case, I doubt there is any relationship between a cardioversion of AFib and PVCs. I'd guess being in NSR is better than AFib relative to developing PVCs, and for everything else for that matter.
865307 tn?1239438996 Sounds like the cardioversion didn't work (hold), that happens and has happened to me, several times with different periods of sinus, from about 18 months to about one week, a little better than your case, but still worthless. In my case I'm thinking electro cardioversion, not drug cardioversion. If you are in AFib you should be under care/treatment, and at least be on an anticoagulant, which be aspirin, depending on you collection of risk factors, AFib being a major one for clotting.
4356842 tn?1353312209 So I had a pretty crappy cold about a week and a half ago, now being on digoxin I can't take cold meds so I stick it out. Well the cold is now over and my teeth are hurting. I see no signs of abscess' and my mom thinks it might be a sinus infection. No from what I've read online they usually give amoxcillin to treat it. My question is has anyone else on digoxin taken amoxcillin? Is it safe. Being on dig I know there's a lot of stuff we can and can not take.
Avatar f tn m on Metoprolol 200mg, Warfarin 7 mg, Digoxin and Omeprazole 20mg [so that this cocktail goes down without blowing-up my intestines.] Talk about a "zombie" I could be the Queen of The Zombie's! It's not that I'm sleepy......I'm more like a thoughtless, mindless, moron!!!!! I'm told it's the BetaBlockers that are doing it and to just "go with it" until, hopefully, the Cardioversion puts my heart on a more regular beating pattern.
Avatar f tn The Heart Rhythm Society did a few randomized trials to assess the efficacy of calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers and digoxin in SVT. A comparison of verapamil, propranolol and digoxin showed equivalent efficacy in a small group of patients. However, in general calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers are preferred to digoxin. Digoxin has been around for a long time! I used Digoxin over 50 years ago for my PSVT, and my recollection was that it did little to prevent episodes.
