Common Questions and Answers about Difference between vyvanse and ritalin

vyvanse

Avatar n tn My son who is 9 yrs old has started Vyvanse since January of this year. He is currently on about 25 mg of Vyvanse. The only thing that I don't like about it is that it takes a long time to kick in, like about 2.5 hours for my son. So often in the morning he will seem unfocused so will not do well during early 8am test. His doctor and I discussed trying Ritalin first in the morning and then adding Vyvanse, which is the reverse of what many people do.
Avatar f tn I am very healthy except for this disorder, but was seeing a doctor for medication, Strattera when I went on medicaid. Does medicaid cover Stratterra, Vyvanse or Concerta and other ADHD or ADD medications?
Avatar n tn Hi, I was recently diagnosed with inattentive type ADD not too long ago but i was also diagnosed as Major Depressive with lots of anxiety (nothing official with the anxiety, but it was definitely there) well over a year ago. The first script i was given was generic Ritalin and it worked very well... well enough to completely get off anti-depressants and for most of that anxiety to go away.
Avatar f tn So I went and visited a general practitioner that specializes in weight loss. He prescribed Vyvanse to take in the morning then before bed I am supposed to take Topamax (migraine medicine) and Trintellix (an antidepressant) as well as a diet. I started on the Vyvanse mostly b/c I also suffer from ADHD and it is really great so far for my attention at work.
2164295 tn?1337019528 I am currently taking Vyvanse 70mg in the morning, 10mg of Adderall (short acting) in the evening, and trying to implement a daily nap schedule. Over the last year the cataplexy I experience has increased and my muscle tone has decreased. I lost my job in September of 2011, because I was having such difficulty getting up to go to work and staying awake at work. I have tried taking Wellbutrin XL for the cataplexy but I don't think it has really done much.
Avatar f tn Appt coming up to discuss this and I am hoping he will switch me back to vyvanse and allow me to take it twice a day in order to get full coverage. Any advise on what to tell my Psych. at my Dr. Appt, or any research/evidence that I could read would be GREATLY appreciated!
Avatar f tn I am sorry your son is going through this, please read the other Post I have read that the Drugs you mention do have the side effects you describe, to find out for your self you could put it into the search Engine and check each Drug out , read the other thread on this site just before yours .
Avatar f tn There definately is a difference between Ritalin and Adderall. Adderall is stronger. For instance, if a person is on 30mg of Adderall and wants to switch to Ritalin,..you will need aprox. 50 to 60mg of Ritalin to be equivelant to the 30mg of Adderall. I am on 60mg of Adderall daily. I wanted to try Ritalin again just for the heck of it. I have shown proof from reliable sources, to my Doc that he needs to give me MORE than 60mg Ritalin for it to be effective as 60mg Adderrall.
Avatar n tn It sounds like you're on too high of a dose for one. The second problem is that it's eating through your system too fast. I have heard other people talk about a lull in the afternoon from Vyvanse. I was on it for quite awhile. If you are having anxiety, it's typically when the stimulant is LEAVING your system when you're ADHD. The key to treatment with stimulants is to have something to help you come down after getting a good 12-16 hours of coverage.
Avatar f tn If you are suffering from anxiety and need to control it with Xanax, you certainly do not want to use any form of speed, which is what most ADD medications are. You would wind up in a straitjacket. You are very wise to use Xanax only on an as-needed basis. It is extremely addicting. And here is something you might try. When I was suffering the effects of adrenal fatigue, I was told to use Xanax on an as-needed basis, which I did, and it helped enormously. I was given .
Avatar f tn This is my 3rd month on Vyvanse. 1st wk on 40mg. I was on 30mg prior. I feel fine for the first 2-3hrs after I take it. If anything I tend to hyperfocus on things and have to make myself switch tasks. However around the 3-4hr mark my heart starts pounding, head starts feeling foggy, face tingles, vision gets super blurry, I lose all motivation and get irritable. I have taken my blood pressure multiple times during that period and it's perfect.
Avatar m tn My daughter is prescribed ritalin and takes it at school. The doctor did a Urinalysis test and sent the sample to yhe lab. Well that didn't end so well because ritalin didn't show up in her system at all. Thank god that the day of the appointment she had school or it wouldn't have looked so good on me.
Avatar n tn i have a long day and take vyvanse very early it is suposed to last 12 hrs but i think more like 7 i read that people take boosters with it i still have ritalin cause i just switched 2 weeks ago to 70 mg vyvanse and it doesnt do anything anymore did the vyvanse make it so it no longer works what is the best way to go about this aftr work i take care of my kids all night and have been lacking energy and very short with them which isnt fair cause it is not their fault id ask my dr but he would jus
Avatar f tn t mind me asking why is it that you would need both Concerta and Adderall rather than just taking Adderall alone or looking into Ritalin? Your doc is right that together those drugs are very addictive and even though you aren't looking to abuse the drugs it does not matter a prolonged use of them causes an addictive dependency. It's important to realize that it may take time and trial and error in order to find the right drug to treat your ADD.
Avatar f tn Me too! I take naps because it's an escape grom feeling discontent with everything. I never thought about it that way before. I feel guilty all the time about the naps but It doesn't stop me from taking them. I tried Vyvanse and Adderall. They work but then I can't sleep at night. Is there a non stimulant that works?
1367899 tn?1278121440 My sister and I started a blog on Adderall to learn more about the medication along with alternative and complementary ADHD treatment options. Any feedback from users of Adderall or Adderall XR would be greatly appreciated. Topics to be added this week on http://Adderall.org How is Adderall XR different from Adderall? [Adderall vs. Adderall XR] What is Adderall? How to Make Adderall: [Adderall Background Information] What are the best Adderall and ADHD books?
Avatar f tn Personally, I'm on Vyvanse at 60mg daily, plus a lunch and dinner dose of methylphenidate at 5mg each. Although I've tried so many different ADD medications and doses before ending up where I am, I agree that Vyvanse does take a while to kick in. Not everyone is the same, so if Adderall works better for you it's not very shocking.
Avatar f tn I suffer from EDS (excessive daytime sleepiness) in addition to ADHD of the primarily inattentive type. I find vyvanse and/or Ritalin to be helpful in terms of making me alert and functional which of course has the secondary benefit of improving my executive function issues. With adderall not only am I more alert but it also has a marked impact on my executive function and task management in addition to the wakefulness.
889551 tn?1416184483 Hi! I was diagnosed with ADD recently and I'm waiting to get back in to see my psychiatrist. My last office visit we spoke about the possible medications I could choose from if I completed ADD testing with another Psych. He mentioned Strattera (but he said he didn't feel that it worked), Adderall, and Ritalin. I'm currently on abilify and wellbutrin for depression and these meds, along with adderall and ritalin lower the seizure threshold.
Avatar f tn Some researchers are concerned that the use of drugs such as Ritalin in children and teens might interfere with normal brain development. Heart-related problems — ADD / ADHD stimulant medications have been found to cause sudden death in children and adults with heart conditions. The American Heart Association recommends that all individuals, including children, have a cardiac evaluation prior to starting a stimulant.
744777 tn?1235089263 By the way stimulant drugs, such as Vyvanse, Ritalin and Metadate, seem to make the PDD / Autism and Anxiety symptoms worse in some children. If the Ritalin / Metadate does not work you could try Stratera, a non-stimulant type medicine. Good luck.
405614 tn?1329144114 I called in for one more refill today, and will ask my PCP next week about Ritalin or Adderall; my ms neuro suggested Ritalin if I couldn't afford Provigil. I'm afraid that the Ritalin will give me tachycardia, as a similar medication did several years ago. Now I'm thinking; will my insurance even cover the Ritalin, without a diagnosis? I should grab my formulary...
Avatar f tn My 10 year old son, who is ADHD, was taking 30 mg of Vyvanse and it worked fine for like a month and half. The doctor increased his dosage to 40 mg and it was working great, but again the effects seemed to have diminished in two months. The doctor recommended to keep him in the 40 mg of Vyvanse, which he takes in the morning, and in the evening give him 1 mg of Intuniv. Do you know if that will help with his concentration at school?
Avatar m tn I take 1.5 mg Klonopin + 50 mgs of Vyvanse. I have ADD but the Vyvanse is also prescribed for depression as I cannot take absolutely any antidepressant without incredible agitation. That started several years ago. Here's the problem at hand, as it starts: Every time I sleep, whether day (as in nap, a rare occasion) or night, I have disturbing dreams I can't put a finger on. I'm often very sad anxious and in some type of bad situation.
14995990 tn?1437789661 So i was diagnosed adhd when i was 15, i am 20 now and i have been on adderal, ritalin, and vyvanse. I stopped the meds about a year ago and just recently got prescribed them once again. Im currently taking vyvanse 60mgs every morning because it really worked for me. But ive been experiencing side effect like dizziness, nausea, ive slept once in the past week for 5 hours. Im very confused, i see flashing lights in the corner of my eyes.
Avatar m tn The difference is that while the Xanax really helps for the anxiety, it is not treating the cause of the anxiety. That is what the adderall is doing. Of course, not positive on that - but anxiety is a very strong co-disorder of adhd. And, I feel it is even stronger in adult undiagnosed adhd. So if you are now treating the possible cause of your anxiety - then that is good. And, I have seen this reported many times with adults.
