Difference between toprol xl and lopressor

Common Questions and Answers about Difference between toprol xl and lopressor

toprol

Avatar n tn I take the toprol xl and I use the generic and it cost me roughly $20 and I take 125mg twice a day. but you must make sure it is the generic for toprol xl because there is metoprolol succinate which is the generic for toprol xl and metoprolol tartrate which is the generic for lopressor. They both work in two different ways so they can not be interchanged at the same dose. I asked this question before toprol xl became a generic.
Avatar f tn I have PAD as well as CAD and I have leg cramps in the calves quite often. I also take Lopressor for my blood pressure and heart ryhthm, but think my cramps are from the blockages.
Avatar f tn They gave me lopressor 25mg and a 1000cc of NACL. They sent me home with instructions no caffeine and take toprol. I have never smoked and do not drink. I do have the normal stressors with being a RN, wife and mother of two but other than that nothing. What could be causing these problems? The Dr cannot find anything but do see the high B/P and palpatations.
Avatar f tn Thank you both! Jerry, I have AFib and SVT. Thankfully, both have been very successfully treated with Sotalol. And so, for that reason, my EP (like yours, Twinbee) has decided to cut me back to Toprol- which is good news. He originally decided on 25 mg twice daily, but my blood pressure is a low normal anyway (100/60 or lower at times) and wanted to avoid it being lowered any further. Thank you both very much for the responses!
Avatar n tn The difference is that Toprol XL is extended release so you get a steady slow release of metroprolol in your system throughout the day. Generic metoprolol is not extended release so it enters your system and then gradually disappears.
926651 tn?1244140366 I have been on Coumadin for most of the last two years following two episodes of clots in my right leg. My INR varied between 1.8 and 2.4 and most often was between 2.0 and 2.2. In those two years may other medications, my diet, and level of exercise remained mostly the same. My Coumadin dose was 5mg four days a week and 7.5mg three days a week for most of the two years. Now my INR has suddenly jumped up. Yesterday it tested at 4.9, so my doctor had me retested today and it was 4.3.
376186 tn?1219279505 I am back on Toprol XL, 50 mg for PVC's and have been doing a 'no no'.....online reading about possible side effects of this drug and most of what I came away with is that this drug has lots of bad side effects for most people. There is a website where people can post their experiences with medications and 90% of the people who posted had terrible side effects w/this Beta Blocker. I hate taking meds to begin with and now I am not so sure that I should stay on this.
Avatar f tn I recently wore a 14 day monitor and today my cardiologist said I have STV. I assume he can tell the difference between STV and sinus tachycardia but to me they feel the same. I already take 50mg Toprol XL twice a day. He wants me to take a half pill extra when I take my regular pill. I really don't want to because a beta blocker wipes me totally out. I can barely get through the day.
Avatar f tn Dear Di: I have taken toprol xl for about 12 years and have not had a problem with it.. The XL stands for extended life.. it is not all released at once in your system..So I would say the reason you cant take it just when you have a problem is that your body does not get the full effect immediately.. You have to take it and build it up as I understand it.. dunno not a dr...but thats the way Ive always understood it.. basically its a very safe medication to take... hope this helps.. .
Avatar m tn I have taken 50 mgs of toprol XL for 12-13 years. It is a very safe and a good medication in my opinion. The XL means that it has an Extended Life .. in other words one pill is supposed work for at least 24 hours i think... but anyway... I dont know why the doc would say just use it when your rate is fast.. if you took one a day ....your heart rate should stay pretty regular Id think.. but Im not a doctor... I dont really know about taking it occassionally... doesnt make alot of sense to me..
Avatar n tn I, too, take Toprol XL as well as meds for depression and anxiety and have just learned about these problems with it.
Avatar f tn My husband also has irregular heart rate and this week we got him switched back from generic metoprolol succinate to toprol XL and lo and behold he is back in good heart rhythm. That got me thinking if indeed my problem could be similiar.......one thing that has really upset me is that after my heart attack my EF was at 42% and it has dropped to 30% and again wonder if I need to be on diferent drugs. My dr thinks that isn't the answer but I'm not sure...... Any thoughts?
Avatar f tn I noticed a big difference. I think if you contact your cardio or gp (whoever writes your script for Toprol XL) they would do the same thing. I read LOTS of information that the generic was causing all kinds of problems in people.
Avatar f tn About two weeks ago I woke in the night with fast heart rate and was brought to the ER. I have had fast heart rate in the past and my internal medicine doctor put me on toprol xl 50 mg once a day. At the hospital they did cardiac testing and told me it was anxiety. On the ECG they performed my results came back borderline. They also gave me 5mg lopressor in the IV, and I've been having PVC's ever since the administration of the drug.
Avatar f tn Instead of lasting 24 hrs, the generic Lopressor only last 10-12. Completely unbelievable! She wrote the original RX of Toprol XL and then the next one of Lopressor, and at what point did it occur to her NOT to at least inform me? So i could talk to my cardio and see if 1) He was aware of the shortage or 2) any further adjustments should be made? >:( sorry for ranting but im really mad that this might be whats making me feel so bad.
Avatar f tn My LDL is 223 and before 222. when taking toprol XL 50-75 mg. My cholesterol is 177 when I am not on antihypertensive drugs. Is there any documentation that proves Toprol XL can elevate cholesteral levels. Thank you, Sandra Smigielski R.N. This discussion is related to Toprol XL and Benicar side effects.
Avatar n tn Does anyone take NSAID's with their Beta Blocker? I take Toprol XL and it said there is a moderate drug interaction.
Avatar f tn My blood pressure runs around 91/60 and my pulse rate at 50 is this to low is this why I might feel sluggish and tired with no energy. I take medicine for tachycardia 50 mg p/day of toprol xl.
343006 tn?1314446471 I then e mailed the makers of toprol xl - and they confirmed toprol xl can cause ringing of the ears as a known side effect. I also checked DIovan and its listed as well - Due to this , I guess the next best thing to do is see my Doctor and complain to get off the medications or switch them. thanks too for info on h.b.p and how it can cause ringing in the ears, when its too high .. I recheck and check my b.p everyday 3 to 4 times daily- when medicatated its down to normal levels.
Avatar f tn There are some medications that have a recognized difference between brand name and generic, and there are some brand name drugs that do not have generics because they were too difficult to produce. The medication will be out of your system in less than 5 days. As far as lasting effects, it is difficult to say. Like I mentioned, I have not heard of this happening before and have no personal experience with it.
Avatar f tn Toprol XL also comes in 25 mg and those can even be split to a 12.5 dosage. I take 37.5 twice a day (one and half pills each dose). I started on 12.5 (half pill) a day and increased slowly until I got to 25 twice a day. I am taking it for sinus tach following open heart surgery. It gets my rate to about 95. I can not take a high dose due to low blood pressure and risk of heart block. I began having frequent PVCs and my docs increased the dose to 37.5 twice a day and it did seems to help.
Avatar n tn Metoprolol is available in two forms, fast acting Metoprolol Tartrate (Lopressor), and the time release Metoprolol Succinate (Toprol XL). I used both, and found that side effects are similar; tiredness, weight gain, and a slow pulse. Side effects are more pronounced as the dosage is increased. I had dosages from 25mg to 200mg. daily. Other reported effects are loss of libido, tightness in the chest, itching, irregular breathing, and irregular heartbeat.
Avatar n tn now they are happening all the time. My internist and cardiologist placed me on nanolol and toprol XL. The toprol seemed to work great for two days then did not work. I did have low grade hypertension in the past but I have recently lost 30 pounds and my blood pressure has been ok. I was taking Amoxicillin to treat a cold and the PVC resolved and returned one week after the antibiotic was stopped. Now I am concerned about artery blockage being a cause.
Avatar m tn m @210 (still overweight) and on low dosages of Lisinopril (10mg), Toprol XL (25mg), and a diuretic (37.5). Over the past 4 weeks, I've experienced some morning sluggishness and ED. It's not a sudden onset; I've been very cold some nights at bedtime, had sporatic ED... and I walk 5 miles a day four or more times a week... so up to now, no one has been surprised about a pulse of 60. Only now my pulse is often @ 50 and occasionally in the mid to upper 40's.
Avatar n tn I have had 8 er visits in 2 years for afib. I take toprol 25 mg XL twice a day and a baby aspirin. Once I was cardioverted, once treated with amiodorone (in France), and the remaining times converted with toprol/or digoxin. All other cardiac exams are normal. Due to the frequency of re-occurence of a fib, the MD is thinking of Sotolol but because of the risk of v-fib. I am holding off. Is this side effect a common occurence? I am tired all the time. Could that be from the a-fib or the toprol?
