Avatar m tn In the ZOCOR Survival Study, the number of patients with more than one liver enzyme level elevation to greater than 3 times the normal upper limit was no different between the ZOCOR and placebo groups. Only 8 patients on ZOCOR and 5 on placebo discontinued therapy due to elevated liver enzyme levels. Patients were started on 20 mg of ZOCOR, and one third had their dose raised to 40 mg.

Avatar f tn t read anything that says the Zocor was responsible, just conjecture that it may be based on some Internet research. Zocor which is merely simvastatin is very safe and the incidence of side effects very low, but some will be affected differently than others.
428155 tn?1203688894 in New Zealand), which my GP had prescribed me 2 years beforehand to control my cholesterol level. I stopped simvastatin and all fibrillations have disappeared. As I was taking simvastatin, I was in fibrillation 17% of the time; 1 month after I stopped simvastatin, the level was down to 0%. I am now experimenting with alternative cholesterol control methods: Omega 3 gels, ground linseed, charcoal.

Avatar m tn Advicor (lovastatin/niacin extended-release), Simcor (simvastatin/niacin extended-release), and Vytorin (simvastatin/ezetimibe).
Avatar m tn I am wondering if anyone has taken simvastatin, the generic brand for Zocor. I just started taking this on Friday and twice since then I seem to have had some strange side effects. It has caused an upset stomach and then made me feel very jittery. It was almost as if I had the chills and then both nights had a horrible time sleeping. The only similar item I ate or drank was Diet Cranberry Soda. I am not sure if this would have had an impact. Any insight would be great.

Avatar n tn My understanding is that the statins with the greatest LDL reducing effect are Crestor, Lipitor, Zocor, and Pravachol, in that order. I don’t mention Leschol and Mevacor since they appear to be rarely used since recently due to the aforementioned being more powerful. Do we have any available solid data on the effects of the various individual statins other than LDL reduction? For example, do we know which ones raise HDL the most? What about effects on particle size or Lp(a), etc.
1423357 tn?1511085442 There is no evidence that your cholesterol med Simvastatin [Zocor] raises glucose levels nor does it cause diabetes. Your doctor is correct. Poor diet/nutrition is a major contributor to your high cholesterol, your rising glucose levels and will lead to full blown diabetes. Other contributing factors are being a "bit overweight" and lack of exercise. "..could they point me to an authoritative source that I could direct him to?" Point him to?
Avatar n tn I've been off my statins (Zocor and Tricor) for a couple of months now and it seems my palps are way less frequent. I'm not sure if it's coincidence or if I'm just in one of those quiet palp times that we all experience. The problem is that I'm sure my cholesterol has gone up since I've been off my meds. I'm going to get it rechecked soon and then weigh my options.
Avatar f tn Advicor (lovastatin/niacin extended-release), Simcor (simvastatin/niacin extended-release), and Vytorin (simvastatin/ezetimibe).
Avatar f tn I am currently taking 325 mg aspirin, 40 mg of simvastatin, and am trying my best to quit smoking. My question(s): will this regimen reduce the plaque build up and, if so, by how much and how long? Is it possible to reduce without taking something like zocor, just quitting smoking? Rather quit smoking than stay on zocor. How concerned should I be?
Avatar f tn I'm a 62-year old post menopausal woman, 5'2", 108 lbs. Meds are Lotrel 5/20, Spironolactone 25 mg, Synthroid 50 mcg, Simvastatin 20 mg, daily aspirin 81 mg. Family history of diabetes, digestive cancer, CAD. My last lipid test results: Total cholesterol 179, Tri 45, HDL 88, LDL (Direct) 92, LDL-P 926. Last year I cut out starchy foods and simple carbs because my A1c was 5.9, which brought it down to 5.5. However, my A1c was back up to 5.
Avatar n tn I have been on Lipitor and simvastatin (Zocor) I have no major health problems, eat a good diet, only a few pounds too many, not enough exercise. What can I do to lower my LDL number?
Avatar f tn I hear this quite often. Next tie you speak to your doctor ask about Zocor. There is a generic called simvastatin and it is very cheap yet very effective. Also, the additional med that your doctor was talking about is most likely a fenofibrate like Tricor which is commonly added to a statin med. I am on both and they have worked very well for me with no side effects.
Avatar n tn Generally, if you experience muscle weakness as a side effect of Lipitor (atorvastatin), other statins will produce similar effects, so that eliminates the use of Zocor (simvastatin), Crestor (rosuvastatin) etc. After statin therapy fails or is not tolerated, it is normal to try ezetimibe (Zetia), which you said did not work. The use of colesevelam (WelChol) is not high, and is often the 'last ditch effort' to lower cholesterol.
315318 tn?1353251800 I've been taking simvastatin and Tricor for years without issue. Are you sure you were on a fenofibrate or a fibrate? There are some issues when using a fibrate along with a statin but the side effect incidence when combining a fenofibrate and statin are extremely low. Being a diabetic is also an issue with the use of a fenofibrate as the combined therapy does not appear to be any more effective than a statin alone.
Avatar m tn Warnings and Precautions Because simvastatin can affect the liver, it is used with caution in people who drink more than a moderate amount of alcohol or have a history of liver disease. Simvastatin is not recommended for people with liver disease or high liver enzymes before treatment begins. Possible Symptoms of Liver Problems Several symptoms can occur in someone who develops liver problems while taking simvastatin.
Avatar m tn Hello all, I've posted on here on similar topics before, but still trying to work out what is going on? Basically, I've had problems with anxiety on and off, which I think were initially triggered by a medication I was taking. I have also had problems with extreme fatigue and drowsiness. I had started taking benzos last year, and I think a lot of the ongoing residual anxiety was benzo withdrawal.
Avatar f tn Fat-soluble statins like Lipitor and Zocor cause more damage than water soluble statins like Pravachol and Crestor. Hence the latter should be tried at lower dose. Possibility of hypothyroidism and diabetes should be ruled out as the presence of either disease can complicate the muscle pain. The role of Co Q10 in lowering cholesterol is controversial and should not be tried without consulting your doctor. Please discuss these points with your treating physician.
907968 tn?1292622204 Are you a mouth breather? that could cause dry mouth! are you takeing a good quality oil? is it liquid or capsul? try takeing at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Avatar f tn There are a lot of things that could cause the abdominal pain, jaw pain, and tingling feeling and they are not listed as side effects, but they could be related. I googled Simvastatin and found that it is a cholesterol medication, Zocor (one of the statins). When I clicked on the link it immediately brought up a safety warning that said on certain high doses there is an increased risk of muscle injury.
Avatar f tn Research shows that 61 out of every 1000 patients on 80mg of simvastatin develop muscle problems. I do believe the half life for Simvastatin is quite short, 5 hours or less. If you take 80mg, then 5hours later only 40mg will remain. Another 5 hours only 20mg. So after 24 hours there will only be around 2-3mg in your body which is top up time.
