Difference between lyrica and gabapentin

Common Questions and Answers about Difference between lyrica and gabapentin

Avatar n tn Gabapentin and Lyrica are in the same class of anti-convulsants and have similar actions. However their side-effect profiles may differ somewhat. If you are finding that the side-effects with gabapentin are tolerable then it would probably be best to increase the dose under doctor's advice. There is a long way upwards that you may go with the dose before reaching the upper limit, as Jason80 points out.
329994 tn?1301666848 Gabapentin and Neurontin are the same med- you are correct. Neurontin is the brand name. I found Gabapentin and Lyrica to be very similar, but Lyrica is stronger at lower doses. I have tried Cymbalta as well and didn't like it. I had trouble with my GI system. I had diarrhea the whole time I was on it and I became incredibly depressed.
Avatar m tn i used to be prescribed this medication (gabapentin) for GHB withdrawals and as a mood stabilizer and I did abuse it. most of the time at dosages of 8 to 12 800mg tablets at a time and I just wanted to caution anyone who might take alot of it that it did make me have seizures from time to time at dosages as low as 8 400mg capsules. just a cautionary note.
Avatar f tn She finally tried me on Baclofen, but I couldn't handle it. I am not on flexeril and neurontin and it has mad a difference. I absolutely cannot miss a dose but, my symptoms that she said the neurontin would take care of are still there and that is why I am wondering if I am on too low of a dose. My neuro and I seem to have communication issues. I'm debating on whether or not I should call her or my PCP or start looking going to another neuro or a MS specialist.
Avatar f tn You could talk to your doctor about possibly switching and see how it works for you personally. There is a big price difference there. Lyrica is fairly new and therefore more expensive and also doctors tend to prescibe the newer drugs that the drug reps say are better. Pregabalin (Lyrica) and gabapentin (Neurontin) are effective medications commonly used for the treatment of neuropathic pain, post-herpetic neuralgia, seizures, and fibromyalgia.
Avatar m tn I suffer from chronic pain and had allergic three actions to gabapentin, lexapro and cymbalta, then I switched pain doctors not happy, he suggested lyrica I said I wouldn't go on it until I spoke with Eli Lily they told me there is no chance of me having the allergy, I was only on it for two weeks and that dyskinesia kicked in, I was on a low dose, only one pill, because I was or he having problems with it. Now I'm in lyrica brutality withdrawal!
Avatar f tn I asked her what I can do for the burning rib pain between now and then - she told me take the gabapentin I had been prescribed or go to the ER. 2 Questions: 1. I'm very reluctant to take meds. and I'm terrified of the "depression, suicidal thoughts" side effects I have read can happen with gabapentin. Honestly- I don't really need a pill right now to make me more down than I already am at this point. Is this a good med.
5100586 tn?1363648354 My doctor as suggesting neurontin or lyrica, so I tried it for a shirt while but it did not make any difference in my pain, plus it made me feel spacy and sleepy all the time. So I stopped taking it, and now all this. I am so miserable, I actually felt better last week than I do now. I have bene through other types of withdrawals in the past, when I TrIed to stop taking the hydrocodone purely for health reasons . I just didn't want to be on all these meds............
211940 tn?1267884866 Since then the pain is in my shoulder, collar bone, mid arm (between the shoulder and elbow), elbow and wrist. My elbow is now very sore after typing or writing if it's not well supported on a desk. Although it doesn't hurt to the touch. My range of motion has decreased and I'm losing strength as well as the same symptoms are beginning in my R arm now. I've had an xray which showed nothing. Went to PT but wasn't getting better.
Avatar f tn Just google ,Lyrica w/d or When does Lyrica w/d end and you will find a bunch of forum and ppl going through hell trying to get off it! Most can't handle it! Im soo trying to be strong and deal with it! I have chronic pain already, so Im used to being in constant pain!
Avatar f tn If it doesn't work, then i'd try the Lyrica. However, if its the difference between a $10 and $25 copay (as it is with my insurance), I'd use the Lyrica to quicken the chance of relief. But with both medications, be aware of the side effects. I've seen reports here of people having trouble stopping Lyrica once they start -- even though this is not a reported side effect.
1794671 tn?1338798991 It has worked well this far along. To me, 3 norco is the equivalent to 2 vicodin to a normal person with normal tolerance. The amount of norco is not based on how it treats my pain, but how much I have grown to tolerate it. If I were to completely stop for a month, 2 vicodin would treat my pain just as 3 norco would. It is unfortunate that I am on this much but like I said some days I can get through with only taking 8 then some days I have to take more.
Avatar f tn And I'm trying to find help to help me deal with all of this, but if you have the wrong kind of insurance (state funded) your crap out of luck!!!!!! And this is bay # five for me so I kinda know the difference between the w/d symptoms and being pregnant symptoms. The pregnancy symptoms have nothing on these w/d symptoms! So I'm pretty much in hell all the time!
Avatar f tn MSContin - also LA Morphine Sulfate but without the naltrexone HCI. That's the difference between the two Morphines. Are you on a NSAID? They are usually the first medications ordered to reduce the pain of arthritis. A burst of oral steroids may also help reduce your present flare, you may want to discuss the possibility with your physician. Gabapentin (Neurotin) was not effective in treating my nerve pain. Lyrica has been a much more effective drug for me.
1238753 tn?1271179783 Other meds used are gabapentin (Neurontin), pegabalin (Lyrica), and such. Tegretol tends to have fewer problems. And it is a myth that you need to monitor levels, because you use the dose that helps the pain, you're not maintaining a dose to prevent seizures. Bilateral TN is a screaming indicator of likely MS. Some neurosurgeons will state outright that all bilateral TN = MS. Either way, the first three things in the differential diagnosis should be MS, MS, and MS.
Avatar f tn I too have started to lose weight after only 6 weeks of taking between 50 and 100mg a day. The interesting thing is for the last two years I have exercised at least 3 times a week and pretty hard too. During the time I've been taking Tramadol, I have not been to the gym once. I put some of this down to a reduced appetite but believe there must be another pharmacological reason also. Mood Improvement?
Avatar n tn I was prescribed Topamax along with an appetite suppressant (Adipex) for weight loss a bit over a year ago and stopped taking them after two and a half months. I did not lose all of the weight I had wanted to, but most of it. I had gained 55 pounds while on Paxil over the course of two and a half years. By taking a combination of the two medicines, I lost 22 pounds the first month, 10 pounds the second month, and 8 pounds the first half of the third month.
Avatar f tn Every morning I wake up with this awful aching and have to take another 100 mg of gabapentin and a tramadol. If I dont' take something right away, the pain gets to be about a level 10. It literally hurts worse than labor and delivery. I didn't cry during the births of my kids but sometimes this pain puts me over the edge. I get jumpy eyes and my head feels like someone is taking 2 wires and touching them together causing this wierd jerky movement. Is anyone else experiencing this stuff?
Avatar n tn ) was high in blood test. Idon't understand the connections between Hep C and CTS, and RA. Is there a test for Cryoglobulinemia? Would cortisone injections help? are the recommendations for exercises and rest and the splints going to help me? Sorry I'm really getting hysterical, and need some support.
15227985 tn?1439633082 Because I am a chronic pain patient and also a recovering addict...I would like to clarify a few of the differences between Lyrica/pregabalin and Neurontin/gabapentin. They are "similar".....but also have some major differences. They are both medications that need to be titrated UP when you first go on them.... meaning to gradually increase your dose. Likewise, when you go off of either of them, you must wean yourself DOWN.
335728 tn?1331418012 the thing is, I am on 1200mg Gabapentin/day and 900mg/Tegretol/day and 75mg/Lyrica/day and IT IS STILL EXCRUTIATING!!! But what I was asking was is that the sort of pain you have with MS? I have been diagnosed with MS but the "Power's that Be" don't think that this is MS but they have no other answers! I am soooooooo frustrated and in so much pain today that it's killing me I am sure!!! I have an appointment with my g.p. this after noon and I am thinking...WHY?
Avatar m tn It's for that reason that I wondered there might be a connection between my spine problems and spasms in the legs and feet. In the lower back, I had moderate stenosis but the main problem was scar tissue impingin on my nerve roots. The lumber fusion was an 8-hour surgery because the doc had to separate the scar tissue from the nerve roots. The twitching preceded the surgery, however, and has not improved after the surgery.
Avatar f tn One doctor told me I haveBack Pain with Sciatica, Hematuria and he went on im his notes I have MS and the MS is called Arthralgia and Muscle problem. Now another told me that Diagnostic were that he note Facet Arthrosis in the lower spine -L4-L5 and L5-SI and mild facet hypertrophy. But no significant disc bulge or protrusion is seen at any level. Disc space are well maintained. Now after my baby was born 2 month she came down with Baterial Meningitis after I stop breastfeeding expain that to me.
Avatar f tn I have some feeling in my chin and I can feel intense cold and heat. the itchy and tingly feeling are few and far between now. my lip feels like its chapped and burning a little. this is a good thing though, as pain means no nerve damage. I definitely can tell a difference between today and when this first started about 7 weeks ago. I think I still have a few weeks before im over this completely, but the worst is over. the teeth being squeezed together thing is pretty much gone.
Avatar m tn There's a huge difference between ppl that use opiates to manage chronic pain and ppl that abuse opiates or use them for the the "high". The research and statistics prove my statements. The rare few who do develop a problem with an addiction are often those that have a genetic predisposition to addiction. Yes there are a small number of chronic pain patients that have that genetic predisposition- when they discover that fact most chose other methods to manage their pain.
Avatar f tn I also had weight gain on lyrica and gabapentin. The awful taste and sores in my mouth, as well as the heartburn and other stomach issues that I had while on the topomax helped with the weight gain because eating was the last thing I wanted to do.
Avatar n tn This new neurologist is as baffled as all the other doctors I have seen. He has prescribed Gabapentin and it did not get rid of them completely but seemed to help a little. I am now waiting for the results of skin grafts that was taken in Nov 2007. Meanwhile the neurologist feels that they may just go away as quickly as they came and to just suck it up while you wait. Phew, not a good diagnosis as far as I'm concerned. Stay in touch.
755322 tn?1330272714 The nerve pain in my hands and feet was excruciating and I started Lyrica which helped but addled my brain even more so I stopped and tried gabapentin which I have depended on ever since. Worked like a charm with no side effects. In Jan 09, I saw fourth Neuro after my dbl mastectomy (no chemo no radiation as I refused. She sent me for lumbar puncture. I asked to check for lyme in the CFS.
