Avatar f tn My endocrinologist prescribed me Atorvastatin 40mg in place of the simvastatin but it has since given my major chest pain and muscle weakness in my fingers and legs; so I was advised by the pharmacist to stop that and I have only taken the new statin twice and tonight was the second time taking it. Is simvastatin something that can be eased up to a higher dose to do the exact same thing atorvastatin does for the bad cholesterol?

Avatar n tn Statins do not suit everyone. My next door neighbour who is in his 60s had a severe reaction to simvastatin and now refuses to take any statins. My husband too refuses to take statins. The bad high cholesterol can be reduced through exercise and consuming the right type of foods and losing weight if this is an issue. Hope all goes well for you. Best wishes.
446474 tn?1446347682 The agency singled out atorvastatin (Lipitor), rosuvastatin (Crestor), and simvastatin (Zocor) for the new warnings and restated a warning about mixing lovastatin (Mevacor) with HIV and HCV drugs. Today's FDA safety communication follows label changes announced Tuesday that added cautions about new onset diabetes and transient memory problems for users of any of the cholesterol-lowering drugs in the statin class.
Avatar f tn There does seem to be a significant difference in the way different statins affect people. Simvastatin is virtually the 'automatic' version which most doctors automatically prescribe to patients as a starter. Atorvastatin is another common one. Your GP will find one which suits you with regards to side effects but you should stop taking them if you experience discomfort from them and then try another brand.

Avatar m tn Usually diet and exercise is the best first place to start, but with an LDL this high I would probably recommend starting a cholesterol lowering medication as well, such as a statin (e.g. atorvastatin, simvastatin). All medications have potential side effects, but the statins are relatively well tolerated by most people and your doctor should be watching for any dangerous side effects (which are rare).
Avatar f tn 2 This was a single center, randomized clinical trial of 161 patients with mean age of 60 years and 46% with known cardiovascular disease. The effects of atorvastatin 80 mg/d and pravastatin 40 mg/d on CIMT were compared. Baseline CIMT and other characteristics were similar in both groups. After 12 months of follow up it was found that the LDL-C was around 76 +/- 23 and 110 +/- 30 mg/dl in the atorvastatin and pravastatin group respectively. There was a regression in the CIMT of –0.034+/-0.

10996785 tn?1432812977 Like you, I pulled myself off of Lipitor (atorvastatin) because of muscle and joint weakness/pain and other recorded side effect. I had only taken it for about five weeks and the discomfort remains three weeks later. I had the same reaction to simvastatin, which I am told is the worst of the bunch. I'm waiting a few months and then I will try something with a less violent track record.
Avatar n tn Also, increase your level of exercise and avoid all processed foods, sugar and alcohol.
Avatar m tn . I am 67 years old and have been taking simvastatin for 10 years. I started when a cardiologist put me on simvastatin and crestor for cholesterol level of 225. My level was brought down to 160. I had side effects and thought that the cholesterol meds might be to aggressive. My internist also questioned the cholesterol medication. He told me that cholesterol causes calcification of your arteries but that is not true with many individuals.

Avatar m tn There was an in vitro study on ezetimibe inhibiting HBV DNA production. The ed50 was fairly low and in a similar range as lamuvidine. So it looked very interesting. But in an in vitro study you have a constant exposure to the drug, which is impossible to achieve in vivo. And the cells used are not the same as regular hepatocytes in human liver, with many differences in gene expression and cellular physiology.
