Avatar m tn I was diagnosed in 1996 with an over active thyroid, I weighed 111 lbs. I'm 5'5" tall. After treatment for a few years the thyroid went to underactive. I've been on 88mg of Levothyroxine for many many many years. Recently I noticed a weight gain without trying. My PCP appt in October 2017 I was 142, my most recent visit along with thyroid testing I was 146. I have not changed my eating habits at all.
Avatar n tn my boyfriend has been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid. He is taking medication. His sister has him believing he needs to eat a gluetin free diet, begin juicing, and other crazy things. She is not a nutritionist. She is just a health fanatic. The problem is every day he gets the chills and an overall blah feeling around 3:00. He says his head feels like it's full of cotton. I keep telling him to go see his dr. He has not seen an endocrinologist yet.

Being 27, female, generally healthy and has never even taken as much as an asprin in two years I am a bit floored by the idea of having to now take a medication for what seems to be the rest of my life. Are there no lifestyle changes I can make?
638830 tn?1222980691 If a person has an underactive thyroid is it certain they will gain weight? Obviously they need to be careful what they eat and exercise but does it make it more difficult to maintain? Especially when pregnant??? I apologize if this seems like a vain question, I'm just curious. If it does make it more difficult, what can you do, diet wise to prevent excessive weight gain and stay healthy?

Avatar f tn s, a disease of the thyroid where it switches between hyperthyroid (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroid (underactive thyroid). With the proper meds and exclusion of inflamatory foods from her diet (dairy, gluten product's, and processed sugars) her hair stopped falling out, scalp no longer is dry and flaky, and all around feels better. I have also learned that just hypothyroid can cause those symptoms as well.
Avatar n tn Hi Is there really any help out there with this. I'm a 54 year old femail with the menopause, if thats not bad enough, I now have an under active thyroid. I am virtually straving myself exercising, and taking libo bind slimming tablets yet getting fatter everyday, needless to say my clothes are tighter and uncomfortable, and yet my GP seems to think it's ok that I have put on weight because my BMI is ok. Other than that she just ignores me.
Avatar m tn I have 14 out of 15 symptoms associated with underactive thyroid. My THS was 1.6 (I have no health insurance, so they just ran the cheapy test since I was paying out of pocket).. so of course that comes up normal. Every woman in my family has thyroid issues, my SON has them at 12.. is it possible even with this reading? I am at my wits end! Tired, ALL THE TIME.. regardless of how much I sleep, cold, weight gain (despite good diet/exercise), thinning hair, super dry skin, you name it.. I gots it!
Avatar m tn Please post your thyroid related test results and their reference ranges so that members can assess the adequacy of your testing and treatment. Yes, migraines are a frequent symptom of thyroid issues. I have seen reports that taking magnesium, in the form of magesium glycinate, or gluconate, or citrate is very effective at relieving migraines. Might be worth a try.

Avatar f tn I have an underactive thyroid and goitres which I have had for the last 2 years. I have recently had a scan which has indicated that my thyroid has enlarged since my first scan 2 years ago. The reason I requested a scan was due to the severe neck pain I am getting on a regular basis. After seeing a surgeon for the 3rd time he has given me 3 options, 1. not to have an operation, 2. To book the appointment for the operation or 3. Take time to make my decision.
Avatar f tn hi..iam 35 female....i also hav underactive thyroid (TSH 7) since 2 years now.i was prescribed hormone pill called thyroxine. But iam not taking the hormone pills ...instead iam eating including fish in my diet 4-5 days a week....fish contains iodine and no cholesterol...prawns and clam also contain high levels of iodine but has cholestrol. Avatar f tn The thyroid weight gain is usually under 10 pounds and is mainly water. Still, I would have a full thyroid panel with thyroid antibody test to rule out thyroid disease as it could be making you not feel like exercising--leading to the weight gain. Also, children do put on weight after age 5 so the tonsil surgery could be a coincidence rather than a true correlation.
Avatar f tn Constipation is a common symptom of underactive thyroid, if diet changes do not work, then get the thyroid exam.
1260907 tn?1269748318 Have you researched all hypothyroid symptoms (long list)? No energy and difficulty sleeping, body pain, are common with low thyroid levels. BP is affected too. Get freeT3 and freeT4 thyroid hormone levels checked - that is what ALL cells need. Do not settle for just TSH which is a 'messenger ' hormone from the pituitary to the thyroid. quote "I am 6'1" tall, weigh in at about 235.
Avatar m tn I am surprised her physician did not notice the high TSH level. She probably has Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). Your doctor will need to diagnose. Mine TSH was > 300 when I finally was diagnosed.
