Avatar m tn Adding supplements to your diet can help reduce cholesterol, but most people have to be at their targets, eating right, and exercising before supplements can help them stay there. One supplement works through the liver just like a statin — because it is a statin, a natural one. Mevastatin is produced naturally by red rice yeast. You can add red rice yeast to your diet by picking up a container at the health foods store.

Avatar m tn ll have to re evaluate what else you can add to the diet changes. Statins also can be helpful when diet is not decreasing cholesterol (and ironically, a healthier diet is increasing it). Please talk to your doctor for suggestions! Let us know what they say.
Avatar f tn When you say high, how high, and what part is high? If this is your first high reading, I would personally try to avoid statins, as they have other deleterious effects on the heart and the rest of the body, but that's just my opinion. Lecithin does help indirectly lower cholesterol by helping to emulsify it, helping it to move more smoothly through the blood vessels. The problem with cholesterol is when it oxidizes, which causes it to stick to the blood vessel walls, narrowing them.

Avatar n tn Cholesterol numbers by themselves don't mean anything. The type of cholesterol is more important, though there's no consensus as to how much of a role cholesterol plays in most types of heart disease. Some people have congenitally high cholesterol. For others, it's their diet and lifestyle, including how much they exercise. The worst part is triglycerides, the next worst is LDL, but HDL is actually beneficial cholesterol.

Avatar n tn can not lose the weight I have gained., and my cholesterol was not good.I tried diet, it did not help and I have yet to lose weight...no matter how I try.... I was also put on statins and I do not like them either...what I found out was this.....I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis which can directly affect cholesterol...and I needed to get on meds for that....I did...
Avatar m tn A couple things to remember, most importantly is that your diet does not really contribute that much towards your cholesterol profile. Only about 10% comes from what we eat. The rest of the excess is created by your liver and may require a med like a statin to control as controlling the 10% from your diet won't get your number in line. These are very safe and very effective so check with your doctor.
