Avatar f tn But that can be expected when you are ill. They have been running at about 150 to 200. It is not ketoacidosis. I am also a diabetic and know the signs. It was the first thing we had checked. I guess my main concern is that he is so weak and tired. I am at my wits end. Maybe returning to the ER for an IV to give him fluid and nutrients that he is unable to ingest is the only thing to do. Thanks again.
Avatar n tn The term is short for diabetic ketoacidosis. This is when high glucose levels (often due to sickness such as a virus) cause the body to start using up its own stores of fat in order to have something to convert to energy. It can be lethal if not treated very quickly, especially in children. This is why hospitals usually hospitalize diabetic children who have ketones showing in their urine (which shows that they are in this condition).
Avatar n tn Hello, you are right to be concerned. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Your nephew's scores are so high, and have been so high for so long, that he's likely experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis. That is the reason he is so thin, because his body isn't getting enough insulin, causing it to consume itself in order to survive. This is a VERY deadly condition.

You may also consider asking for a second opinion from other specialists for further evaluation. Take care and hope to hear from you.
Avatar n tn If your skin is sweet fruity smelling and you have full-blown, uncorrected diabetes it can lead to ketoacidosis [DKA], the body has little or no insulin. DKA if left untreated can lead to diabetic coma or death. If your levels are within acceptable ranges you need to get blood work performed as there are a number of disorders which can cause a fruity/sweet smell on the skin.

Avatar n tn We are sceptical of what doctors say and always try to find first hand from others their experience he was misdiagnosed twicw before he went into ketoacidosis and they figured out he was diabetic. Avatar f tn This can progress to a serious complication called diabetic ketoacidosis. Testing the urine is one way to check for ketones. You can pick up urine test strips at your local drug store. Just follow the instruction to do the test. If I remember right if the test strip turnes pick you have ketones in your urine, plus the strip tells you if there is blood, glucose, and a couple other things. But If I were you I would go get checked out just incase. I hope this helps.
Avatar f tn Yes DKA aka diabetic ketoacidosis has those symptoms but so does high blood sugar in general. She has the 4 common symptoms of diabetes seen in kiddos.

Avatar f tn s urine or blood shows large amounts of ketones, this can lead to Diabetic Ketoacidosis or DKA. This is a life-threatening emergency which occurs when blood sugars have been consistenly over 300. This occurs more commonly in Type 1's, often at diagnosis, but can also occur in Type 2's who have been diagnosed long enough that they don't produce much insulin or the insulin production is overwhelmed by serious infection or stress.
Avatar n tn It is true that when a person is in ketoacidosis for a long period of time they will begin to lose weight. This can be true for undiagnosed and untreated diabetics whose bodies are literally in starvation mode because they are not able to convert their food source into energy that can be used to function. This is the lay person's version of ketoacidosis and there is probably a more scientifc explanation.
