Common Questions and Answers about Diabetic ketoacidosis order

diabetes

Avatar n tn Hi I am new here and i hope i am not breaking any rules but my question ia about what effects smoking pot (marijuana) will have on my son (20yrs old) who is diabetic. I am not 100% sure that he is doing this but am sure he has tried it at least once and i want to be able to give him all the correct information about the dangers he is putting himself in before i speak with him about this.
Avatar f tn But it seems as though testing that often is unecessary at best, and psychologically harmful at worst. Remember that she has NOT been diagnosed as diabetic yet, even though her lab results may lean that way in the future. If you test as often as 5-30 minute intervals in ANY normoglycemic person, you may see some swings you would be surprised about.
Avatar m tn This is a sign of Ketoacidosis, which may occur in diabetes. It is a potentially life-threatening condition. For type I diabetes your husband may not be injecting enough insulin before bedtime. I would suggest follow up testing by his PCP is in order to determine whether his insulin dose needs adjustment. For an explanation of Ketoacidosis go to this link http://www.diabetes.org/type-1-diabetes/ketoacidosis.
1327535 tn?1295231211 Although rare in t2 diabetics, the possibility of diabetic ketoacidosis, a life threatening complication, may have surfaced. Get off the computer and call your doctor now.
Avatar f tn Your post brought out several key items of interest. First, a fruity breath can indicate a sign of Ketoacidosis, which may occur in diabetes - low blood sugar. This can be life threatening. Eating and drinking food laden with sugars to make on feel normal/OK points to low glucose - hypoglycemic. BUT, you say "i have been to the doctors and they said everything is fine im not diabetic". What test were performed and what were the results?
Avatar n tn The term is short for diabetic ketoacidosis. This is when high glucose levels (often due to sickness such as a virus) cause the body to start using up its own stores of fat in order to have something to convert to energy. It can be lethal if not treated very quickly, especially in children. This is why hospitals usually hospitalize diabetic children who have ketones showing in their urine (which shows that they are in this condition).
Avatar n tn In your case, if your glucose levels are high quite often, you could be burning off some of your fat and muscle even though your body does not seem to go into the severe form of ketoacidosis. From articles I have read, it seems that some people don't tend to go into ketoacidosis as easily as others, and you may be one of those.
Avatar f tn It seems that the diagnostic tests done were pretty much in order. Aside from cardiac and pulmonary issues, other causes of breathlessness include diabetic ketoacidosis, certain medications, hyperventilation and panic attack, thyrotoxicosis and even altitude sickness. You may also consider asking for a second opinion from other specialists for further evaluation. Take care and hope to hear from you.
Avatar f tn But that can be expected when you are ill. They have been running at about 150 to 200. It is not ketoacidosis. I am also a diabetic and know the signs. It was the first thing we had checked. I guess my main concern is that he is so weak and tired. I am at my wits end. Maybe returning to the ER for an IV to give him fluid and nutrients that he is unable to ingest is the only thing to do. Thanks again.
Avatar n tn Your nephew's scores are so high, and have been so high for so long, that he's likely experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis. That is the reason he is so thin, because his body isn't getting enough insulin, causing it to consume itself in order to survive. This is a VERY deadly condition. I can't stress that enough, that the child's life is in danger because his insulin doses are too low.
1947749 tn?1324332989 I would take her to an endrocrinologist for further testing.
Avatar n tn I am not a doctor, but AM a long-time type 1 diabetic with an identical twin who is also a type 1 for 36 years, diagnosed at the same time, but with some different issues that cause highs for her at times. My twin suffers from allergies that I do not have -- she has horses and lives in a totally different part of the country than I do, and allergins to certain things cause her glucose levels to roar upwards while she is exposed to the pollens.
Avatar f tn It may include Ketoacidosis, hyperosmolar non- ketotic acidosis, peripheral neuropathy, blurring of vision, gastropathy and other complications. As newly diagnosed, I experienced having ketoacidosis which I thought was the end of my life. It was sudden in nature and I did not really have any hints of developing such. I felt drowsy at that very moment, been vomiting everything I put in my mouth, and had been breathing so hard that I felt as though I had walked a mile.
Avatar n tn It appears from what you write that you did not know that your daughter was diabetic, and that this episode was a real surprise. Unfortunately, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is frequently mistaken for flu, and this is one reason why it is so dangerous. The reasonable thing to do when your child starts to vomit is to assume that he or she has a stomach virus. So the condition gets worse while the parents are waiting for the virus to run its course, not knowing that anything more serious is wrong.
Avatar f tn I understand you are scared, but I am more concerned that you could end up in a diabetic coma or that you could end up with diabetic ketoacidosis. Both of these things can kill you. You go ahead and call 911 and let the medics deal with your mother if she wants to start yelling at you. The consequences of not taking care of this are too great and are worse than a tongue lashing by a mother who isn't listening to you.
Avatar n tn I am not physician, but the mom of type one diabetic, who is also an asthmatic. The first part of your question sounds very familiar to what happened to us with our daughter. Our daughter had the same problems with her asthma and we thought that she was have a reaction to the asthma meds. I would HIGHLY suggest that you see a pediatric endocrinologist or have your doctor test your daughter immediately for type one diabetes.
1031554 tn?1298593073 My sister suffers from it, and the symptoms are virtually identical - the eyebrows I would attribute to stress, I lost a good deal of mine when I had a severe episode of Diabetic Ketoacidosis, I lost almost 45 lbs in three weeks, and a good deal of hair from the stress...
401987 tn?1203530934 What the hell? I swear I need to stop reading these forums - and I will, right after I respond to this. I'm an MD, and while MDs certainly don't know everything, I'd be surprised (very) if you ended up having diabetes or an insulin-utilization problem. Based on your age and weight? 125 lbs is NOT overweight, OK, and you don't need to explain that you're mostly muscle. I mean, what the F?
Avatar n tn All through the night they constantly tested her, and at about 3 am they announced she was diabetic. She spent Tuesday in hospital, meeting the peadeatric diabetic team, learning about blood tests, and injections, and diet. She was discharged Tuesday evening, and that is when I posted my question. She had not missed her insulin as she had this before we left hospital. The nurse came to see us Wednesday morning before breakfast, and then later that morning.
Avatar n tn And this is interesting because it's been a long known fact that diabetic Ketoacidosis can develop into lactic acidosis if not treated promptly. The only forms of lactic acid in the body I'm aware of is that which is produced as the end result of glucose metabolism, and that which is delivered by Acidophillus (or B. Bacterium, Lactobacillus, etc).
Avatar f tn I had to order my sublingual spray into my local pharmacy. I live in Australia just to add. I like the spray as it's quick and pain free. I currently take 2000mcg daily which is four sprays under the tongue. Tastes nice too and the colour of B12 is red..my favourite colour.
Avatar n tn This is cause by an excess of dimethyl disulfide and should definitely be a case for going to the doctor. If the smell is a more fruity smell it may be a sign of diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a potentially acute emergency. An ammonia/salty fishy smell is a sign of renal failure. All of these are signs that should be taken very seriously.
242084 tn?1244551910 Our Christmas was stressful, with a whole nightmare airline fiasco and all, and the boys both getting sick was just the "icing on the cake", so to speak. When we were sitting in San Diego waiting for our Southwest flight back home to KC, I laid a blanket on the floor to change Alden, and while down there he threw up all over it and himself. Fortunately I had a big Ziploc for the nasty stuff and a spare set of clothes to change him into all in my diaper bag.
Avatar n tn The most common incidence of fluid shifting caused by elevated insulin levels is in the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. While in the hyperglycemic phase, the potassium is pulled from the intracellular space to the serum and then excreted through the kidneys. The serum may indicate that potassium levels are elevated, though the stores are being lost with polyuria.
Avatar m tn I was prescribed Victoza in September of 2010. Since my thyroidectomy two years ago I have gained 75 lbs! My endo says I am borderline diabetic. So, along with metformin, I took the victoza shots 3x daily for one month (the length of the free sample he gave me) and WOW did I love it. I never felt sick and I never felt hungry. In fact, I was often dragging by the end of the day because I'd had no food nor desire for food. I had to literally make myself eat.
427265 tn?1444080036 "I did ask if I could use Metformin from the start with info from 2008 AASLD. They were aware of the study but thought it too small." -------------------------------- The TRIC-1 study used 125 patients and the. The conclusion said... "Triple therapy with metformin, peginterferon, and ribavirin was well tolerated, decreased insulin resistance and increased SVR in this difficult-to-treat group of patients.
Avatar n tn Keep checking the status of the order on the website. Once you see that the order has been shipped there will be a tracking number. I never could track my package but allow 8 to 16 days not counting weekends from ship date. When the package arrived and I was not home to sign for it, the company notified me by email that the package had been return to the post office for pick-up. The mail carrier left a slip for me also.
