I want to add one more thing: dka is much more dangerous in children than in adults, and the mortality rate of children with untreated dka is still fairly high after all these years. Moderate ketones that stay that way should be treated, and vomitting should not be assumed to be viral in a diabetic child if ketones are present. It can be a matter of life or death for a youngster much quicker than for an adult.
It can be lethal if not treated very quickly, especially in children. This is why hospitals usually hospitalize diabetic children who have ketones showing in their urine (which shows that they are in this condition). It is not something that doctors can leave alone and give more insulin and hope it will improve. It requires constant monitoring and quick medical attention to protect the child.
Some people fall into this condition more easily than others, for some reason.
You could easily be in DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) which requires immediate medical attention. I would guess that if you called your doctor and explained your symptoms, he/she may tell you to go the emergency room immediately. But either way, PLEASE GET IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION so you can get treated and be ok!!!!!
Yes DKA aka diabetic ketoacidosis has those symptoms but so does high blood sugar in general. She has the 4 common symptoms of diabetes seen in kiddos.

I've been diabetic for 20 years now. I'm 28. I've been a regular pot user for probably 10 years. I firmly believe that used (not excessively) for diabetics, that pot can help a vast number diabetic complications and symptoms. This has been backed up recently by research on weed and diabetes.

Truely normal blood sugar in adults will be close to 83 and will not vary much at all from this point, and definitely under 100 nearly all the time. In children it may be a bit lower, but probably not lower than 70.
Fasting levels 99 - 125 are considered prediabetic
Fasting levels > 126 are considered diabetic.
2 hours after eating numbers should not be above 120, and numbers above 140 will be considered diabetic.

It really is going to hurt you to have high ketones. It is one of the things that causes diabetic coma in undiagnosed type 1's, used to be known as juvenile. And your blood sugars are far too high. Blood sugars like these can be reason enough for a hospital admission. You may want to contact the medicaid office in your state to get them to cover you medically. You are doing your body no good at all in this current state of being.
But that can be expected when you are ill. They have been running at about 150 to 200. It is not ketoacidosis. I am also a diabetic and know the signs. It was the first thing we had checked. I guess my main concern is that he is so weak and tired. I am at my wits end. Maybe returning to the ER for an IV to give him fluid and nutrients that he is unable to ingest is the only thing to do.

If your skin is sweet fruity smelling and you have full-blown, uncorrected diabetes it can lead to ketoacidosis [DKA], the body has little or no insulin. DKA if left untreated can lead to diabetic coma or death. If your levels are within acceptable ranges you need to get blood work performed as there are a number of disorders which can cause a fruity/sweet smell on the skin.
If you feel bad, please go to the nearest emergency room. You are potentially at risk of diabetic ketoacidosis. Please make sure the people you are living with know what is going on and if you are acting strange / appear unwell, they should take you to nearest medical attention.
We are sceptical of what doctors say and always try to find first hand from others their experience he was misdiagnosed twicw before he went into ketoacidosis and they figured out he was diabetic. So any info from people who live with diabetes is more useful than a doctors observations at times. And thanks for your reply.
A sickeningly sweet smell is usually due to diabetic ketoacidosis and if felt in urine and sweat. I understand that diabetes is under control—was a gylcosylated hemoglobin done to check the over all control?
The second possibility is menopause. Get FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone levels checked. If found in menopausal age group, then hormone replacement therapy will help take care of the odor. Take care!
It is my understanding that if a type 1 diabetic has High BG and ketones, they can go into ketoacidosis and if not treated, they can die, however, I do not believe this would happen in a few hours unless the person was not giving insulin all day long OR unless the person had high ketones all day and could not get his BG down, but I still think that unless the BG was over 600 and not registering on the glucometer, that ketoacidosis would not happen in a couple of hours.
