Avatar n tn My 17 year old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 11. Now all of a sudden for the past week she wakes up in the morning with bld sugars in the 150-200 range but feels lik they are dropping. She has signs of low bld sugar, shaky, heart racing, can't see. As the morning goes on she will drop to 60 after eating & not taking any insulin. What is going on? She is missing school, does your pancreas sometimes work to give her insulin?

She is on target only 18% of the time (when she tests) in the past year she has been hospitalized twice for DKA and once for chest pain where they were very concerned about her kidneys. She is on intensive insulin management but does not record carbs or insulin administered. She does not think she will get complications. Is there an impartal third party who can WAKE HER UP!
Avatar n tn Hello acba, I am a volunteer adn not a medical professional, so my input is based on my experience in caring for my son who is now 10, but was diagnosed at age 3. Everything I have read, says something along these lines.... "Type 1 diabetes: Type 1 diabetes, formerly called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is usually first diagnosed in children, teenagers, or young adults.
Avatar f tn I am also 20 and my doctor thought I had type 2 diabetes. Recently I found out that I have type 1.5 diabetes. I'm still trying to wrap my head around what is 1.5...lol. I know what is 1 and 2, but not 1.5. Believe me for a 20 year old I feel like I have way too many problems.
Avatar n tn hi im new to the whole diabetes thing, its been 3 weeks about, my friends are kind of the party group, i kno that drinking is bad for it because when i was younger a neighbor had to be rushed to the hopsital because he drank alot at a party and had type 1 diabetes and from what i was told nearly lost his life..... so i was thinking of just smoking marijuana occasionally but was wondering the dangers besides just getting the munchies. so my questions are 1.
Avatar n tn Hello everyone, While kebranegast is certainly entitled to his opinion, as one of the moderators in this forum with many years of experience with type 1 diabetes, I am compelled to jump in and tell anyone who may take his post to heart that type 1 diabetes can in no way be cured by marijuanna. It is a medical fact that with type 1 the beta cells are destroyed in the pancreas and require insulin to sustain your lives. Marijuanna can't cure it.
Avatar n tn Hello, My sister has had diabetes type 1 since she was 3 and she is now 10, which brings the question into my mind... How is it that teenagers and adults deal with diabetes during sleep? Bacause upto now there's always one of us waking up to check on her, and I know one day she will be independent and not live with my parents anymore. How do people handle that situation? Bacause it is something that you cannot monitor by yourself, when you are very low you may not be able to wake up alone.
146021 tn?1237208487 Types of Diabetes The three main types of diabetes are type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, formerly called juvenile diabetes, is usually first diagnosed in children, teenagers, or young adults. In this form of diabetes, the beta cells of the pancreas no longer make insulin because the body's immune system has attacked and destroyed them. Type 2 diabetes, formerly called adult-onset diabetes, is the most common form.
Avatar n tn My 4 year old son was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes 18 months ago, and we have very gradually gained better control over that period of time. 5 days ago he woke up with a reading of 3mmol/l (54mg/dl). I reduced his insulin slightly. He ate breakfast normally, and then went into a severe hypo 2 hours later, losing consciousness.
Avatar n tn there are multiple issuess with teenagers dealing with diabetes. Hormones, stress, peer pressure, rebellion, all of it. Don't despair. But it sounds like u need to keep a little closer eye on things which of course ur teenager w/ resent.

568322 tn?1370169040 suggest that caffeine consumption promotes the development of type 2 diabetes in those people who are at greatest risk for this disease," James D. Lane, Ph.D., said at the annual meeting of the Society of Behavioral Medicine. This is the first time that caffeine's effects on insulin resistance have been measured in habitual coffee drinkers with prediabetes, said Dr. Lane of the department of psychiatry and behavioral medicine at Duke University, Durham, N.C.
Avatar n tn I now have this down to a fine art, and although the rapid ejaculation of air is no pretty dainty sound (lucky I am no pretty dainty girl, huh), it offers immediate relief and means I never have to lie down in public. In the last 2 years I can bring up the vomit-burp easily most of the time and feel assured it will not be followed by anything unwanted. The amazing benefit of this is that I am now doing real burps daily!!
Avatar n tn Makes sense if this is where you were in the destruction of the insulin-producing cells. 2) Hormones can make a huge difference in glucose levels for several days at the end of your cycle as hormones that also act as insulin-blockers increase in your body. When they dissipate a few days later, your glucose levels may drop tremendously, so do keep close watch in case this is what is happening to you.
Avatar n tn OK...I'm in!!! My "heat sensation" is usually in my thigh area. Been feeling it for a week or two now. Seems to occur several times a day. I'm 52, work out regularly....but do have some disk issues. I'll follow this thread and post any new developements.
Avatar n tn I've been pain free for 2 weeks now. So far I havent abused my meds....but maybe we can keep each other in line, and informed. LOL I heard there are some real problems w/ regulation over this medication. So we may have to go through the withdrawals together if its taken off the market....LOL I know that's not too funny. Anyway this new doctor has decided to leave, and go back to his home town. So untill I find another dr. I am only taking one a day.....He prescribed two.
Avatar m tn More Kids Are Taking More Meds Than Ever Before Pharmalot | Ed Silverman | More American children are taking pills for diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol than ever before, reflecting a rise in chronic diseases related to obesity. The use of drugs for type-2 diabetes, in particular, doubled in children ages 5 to 19 and statins rose by 15 percent between 2002 and 2005, according to a study published in the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Avatar n tn Eat too much sugar and then you gotta worry about diabetes. Well, okay not really, but if it runs in your family you might. Really, though, I'd have your doctor check your thyroid levels. You might have a thyroid problem. Or you might have a really high metabolism. See a doctor. There might be many reasons. Type I diabetics lose weight I think instead of gaining, so maybe you are diabetic type I? That's the children's diabeties, but it can have a later onset, during the teen years.
Avatar n tn I graduated from high school, college, have been happily married for over 3 years and have 2 amazing children with no complications from my diabetes. While diabetes has been a huge part of my life, I have tried not to let it define who I am as a person. I sincerely hope that he realizes that he needs to take care of himself soon for his own health and your piece of mind. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
1846497 tn?1318999410 She rented a room and then moved in with her boyfriend who is a great support for her. My daughter has had type 1 diabetes for the last 7 years. I was always her support person, but she has always resented any support I gave her. We used to attend the QLD Diabetes centre in Brisbane together every 3 months during the years we lived together. She has had a insulin pump for the last 6 years I never stop worrying about her. Since she has left she has gained 20kgms in weight.
968908 tn?1274874715 Also, if you are diagnosed with Diabetes, please be sure your doctor verifies that you are, in fact, Type 2 and not LADA/1.5. Especially if any of the following are the case for you: You are not overweight or have been losing weight, you have another autoimmune condition such as thyroid or your blood sugar has been on a steady rise recently even though nothing has changed since your diagnosis.

Avatar n tn We all learn from others dealing with type 1 diabetes. Again, I want to thank you, Andy.
Avatar n tn Do you know the name of the type she has? that would be helpful in findingo info on treatments for it. If it was me I'd take her to a specialist like my sister in law did with my nephew. His is now controlled and they didnt use Accutane at all. Good luck finding a solution. As PlateletG points out, the sweat issue can be caused by infection, which acne is I think. Some of the treatments sited here are antibiotics. http://www.skincarephysicians.com/acnenet/severeacne4types.
Avatar n tn First, I wouldn't check my blood sugar before 2 to 2 1/2 hours after a meal. It takes a while for food to get into your system and for the insulin to work. You would be surprised at how much of a difference a half hour can make in your blood sugar. If it is still high, then I might consider lowering the Lantis and increasing the Novolog to cover breakfast, but not without talking to your doctor first. The other possibility is eating a small snack around 11:30 to prevent the lows.
Avatar m tn Ideally, total cholesterol should be below 170 in people ages 2 to 19. Why High Cholesterol Matters High cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and strokes. It also appears to boost the risk of Alzheimer's disease. As we saw earlier, high cholesterol leads to a buildup of plaque that narrows the arteries.
Avatar n tn So, my first suggestion is to go see a specialist in Diabetes or Endocrinolgy, if you don't already go to one. Doctors who specialize in Diabetes tend to keep up on the latest insulins and may know of something that works better than your current insulin with the schedule you want to live on. I don't know if you do any blood testing, but that's another good tool for figuring out how much insulin to take when you eat.
Avatar n tn There are many manufacturers for this type of case advertised in the Diabetes Forecast magazine and other healthcare magazines also. I hope I've helped in some way and good luck making your decision! Enjoy your pump!
