I am not a physician, but a mom of a type one and the daughter of a type 2. In a type one diabetic commonly called Juvenile diabetes( because it usually is diagnoses in children , but I know people that were in they 30's and 40's and were diagnosed) is when the body stop s producing insulin.
Type 2 diabetics your body still produces insulin, but cannot use it properly use the insulin without help of medication.
My three year old son drinks a lot, uses the restroom quite frequently, and says he's really tired a lot here recently. What is a normal blood sugar for someone his age? And could he possibly have diabetes? He has a family history of both type 1 & 2 diabetes on both sides. He isn't losing any weight and plays as normal.
Hi. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is different from type 1 diabetes, which isn't reversible. Type 2 can generally be reversed by changing your diet and getting plenty of exercise. The reason is that type 2 is caused by the body not being able to absorb or use the insulin it creates.
Yes, these are all symptoms of type I diabetes in children. My child was wetting the bed, extremely thirsty all the time and was vomiting; his vomiting, we think, was contributed to a stomach virus he had at the time. We took him to the ER due to dehydration -they did a blood chemistry and his blood sugar was 399-they immediately admitted him to ICU and he was put on IV insulin. He's been a diabetic now for 3 years-he's now 9. He's has handled it amazingly well!
Metformin is commonly mentioned in regards to type 2 diabetes. Regular metformin is taken 2 to 3 times a day with meals however there is an extended release version of metformin which is taken once a day. Type 2 diabetes can be reversed however. There are numerous books on this subject.
Some people are able to control Type 2 diabetes with losing and maintaining healthy weight, lowering carb intake and regular exercise. Some are not, and need medication. It is impossible to answer your question because every diabetic is different and it would depend on how high your numbers were to begin with and what you ate and did. Serious consequences (complications) from diabetes don't occur in 24 hours, they occur over time spent at high numbers.
As far as I know, I also am the only one in my family with type 1 going back generations. From everything I have read and studied, type 2 diabetes is far more a genetic thing than type 1. I was told that the chances of my children developing type 1 diabetes is not much greater than someone who does not have it. My kids are 13 and 16 and no sign of the disease. And I am the one with diabetes. I personally, would not worry about it as you do not have diabetes.
While I have never heard of headaches being related to any kind of reaction to insulin, I know from personal experience that horrible headaches sometimes accompany low blood sugar levels. While they sometimes go away when the glucose levels return to normal after drinking some juice, I have found that sometimes they stay with me for hours after a low blood sugar spell. So my first question would be: has your son experienced any low blood sugar episodes at all on days when he has headaches?
My son (9yrs old) was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in May of 09. I had taken him to the doctors for years because he had accidents all the time, they kept telling me he was fine and not to worry unless it effects him at school. Sure enough, it started, he was going every 20 minutes while in school. Took him back to the dr. and insisted they do more testing.
There are 3 types of diabetes, Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational. Then I say there is type 4. The family members that care for and help support the children and adults with diabetes. While I am sure more research needs to be done, I have heard reports with our children being less active because of our lifestyle and fast foods, obesity in children is rising and some as young as 13 are being diagnosed with type 2.
