Common Questions and Answers about Diabetes symptoms in dogs

diabetes

Avatar f tn Blind dogs can manage very well, but obviously it is better to have the cataracts removed if finance permits. Dogs blind from birth fare better than dogs that become blind later in life. You already have an understanding about not moving furniture, etc., and there are lots f things you can do to improve the quality of life for a blind dog, but ultimately they are still compromised ... and some gs deal with it better than others. You didn't cause this to happen.
Avatar n tn Hi Janie001 ~ thank you for coming to our site in search of answers to your question regarding type 1 diabetes and Cushings disease. The volunteers at this site are parents of type 1 or themselves diabetic and none of us are medical professionals, simply people who collectively have many years experience dealing with this disease. I have very little knowledge of Cushings myself, so I, too, did a search and found much more on Cushings in dogs as did you.
Avatar m tn When they are fed sugar on a regular basis (as 90% of food for them - chinchilla food has sugar in it) they develop diabetes and one of first symptoms is cataracts and white eyes. It would worth checking into whether prairie dogs are similar.
Avatar m tn for the past two weeks he pants 90% of the time? Even when he is in the house for more than two hours. AC is on. Can this be atributed to the diebetes? He has been diebetic for two years now.
1994268 tn?1329466212 It is important to bite the bullet and take him in to the vet for these lumps to be checked. His excessive drinking also has to be addressed. It could be caused by a number of things....kidney insufficiency, or diabetes (which, if caught nice and early respond very well to treatment) Or there may be another cause, but it is best it is discovered quickly so treatment can be started. He will need a full blood-count. And he will need those lumps checked.
Avatar f tn It could be Diabetes, that is usually the first thing to look at with these signs. He could also have a UTI infection, but most male dogs don't get them, but they can get them. If it is diabetes, you would give him a shot twice a day and maybe some pills, if it a UTI, then a round of antibiotis. I hate that as our beloved pets get old they get ill, but so do we. Please let us know what you learn.
Avatar n tn She has been sick since Sunday and has been diagnosed with pancreatis, which apparently is a common problem in dogs with Cushings. Currently she is in the hospital on IV fluids and IV antibiotics. We are very fortunate to have a very good local vet and her condition does seem improved, but we always have the option of taking her to University of PA veterinary hospital. They are wonderful compassionate people there and have been life savers for some of our other animals.
Avatar n tn Moke, a normal meal may take four hours to digest totally but starts to digest much sooner so you need insulin in your system when the food starts to digest. The insulin stays in your system (depending on what type) for several hours. You may need to test your blood sugar two hours after eating occasionally and if it is high or low, you can talk to your doctor or diabetes educator about adjusting your insulin.
Avatar f tn Like in people, diabetes in pets can usuallybe prevented through maintaining a proper weight. Your dog will have more energy, arthritis will be less of a concern, even cancer rates are lower in lean dogs and cats. Good luck.
Avatar n tn That, along with leg weakness is a sign of Cushings, but diabetes could show some of those symptoms, too. Has your vet tested her for either? I definately would try to get the teeth problem straightened out, and then push for more testing so you can get her help. Good Luck.
Avatar f tn Great job first off in having the thyroid tested. It sounds more like diabetes at this point. Diabetes is a hormonal disease much like hypothyroidism and has been known to effect dogs more quickly when they have other hormonal imbalances. Speak with your vet again, they will likely ask for a urine sample so discuss that first when you speak with their team members as they can help you collect a sample.
Avatar n tn Yes, these are all symptoms of type I diabetes in children. My child was wetting the bed, extremely thirsty all the time and was vomiting; his vomiting, we think, was contributed to a stomach virus he had at the time. We took him to the ER due to dehydration -they did a blood chemistry and his blood sugar was 399-they immediately admitted him to ICU and he was put on IV insulin. He's been a diabetic now for 3 years-he's now 9. He's has handled it amazingly well!
Avatar m tn From the symptoms I think your vet is probably right on the money with the diagnosis of a mass in the brain, but I doubt that the tremors signify pain because you said they are of short duration. Pain wouldn't be that transient, so it sounds like she may be having a neurological reaction to the mass. As long as she is eating her food, eager to go outside and is alert and happy to see you when you talk to her, just let her be. You will know when it's time.
Avatar m tn No, but if a pet has all the symptoms, such as enlargement of all the lymph nodes in an elderly patient there is a chance that the patient may have lymphoma. A veterinarian would than do a fine needle aspirate (needle biopsy), or excisional biopsy, and bloodwork to be definitive.
9214378 tn?1408881584 m thinking there may have been several things going on there, including the possibility of diabetes (seizures are not uncommon in seriously ill diabetic dogs). Diabetes can also affect both the liver and more so the kidneys over a period of time and when maybe the symptoms haven't been obvious, therefore appropriate treatment isn't given early enough. The reverse can also be the case ... that is, the kidneys may have been affected first, which then caused the glucose levels to rise.
2065896 tn?1373685384 Yep, prednisone (long-term) can cause diabetes both in humans and dogs. One of our dogs (a Toy Fox Terrier) was on prednisone for about 8 months due to health problems including allergies, he developed diabetes, and now is on insulin and a low-carbohydrate diet. (I think it's more likely in dogs to cause diabetes, I was on prednisone at high doses from 2-14 years old and I have some long-term side effects that do remain but I don't have diabetes.) Have you tried adjusting her diet?
Avatar n tn I called his vet who is treating him for the diabetes, explained his symptoms and the vet offered no diagnosis. His symptoms occurred again after several days, but without the trembling and cold body. I took his temperature; it was between 100 and 101, so basically normal. I took him to another vet hoping for a diagnosis, but again no diagnosis offered. These symptoms have now occurred again on Dec. 17 - Dec. 18. PLEASE HELP. We are exhausted and don't know what to do.
Avatar m tn Vets do not even know what the connection is between Cushing's disease and SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeration Syndrome), but the two are connected somehow. Unfortunately, a dog with SARDS will not regain its sight. When you get the test results back on Tuesday, if your dog is positive for Cushing's disease, the main thing you should keep in mind is that dogs who receive treatment for Cushing's disease do not live any longer than dogs who don't receive treatment.
1485641 tn?1287974298 When sick, Pete will become lethargic and have symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite. This usually will last up to a week and in some cases leads to severe dehydration and require iv fluids from our local vet. He is now experiencing another episode and it's killing us to see him like this and we feel helpless not to be able to help him once again. He has been to different vets and specialist and undergone all kinds of tests, all with negative results.
Avatar m tn It does sound like kidney or diabetes, or kidney and diabetes. Please get him in to see a doctor. The doctor can tell you what treatment costs. It is not going to get better, and it sounds very acute. I would take him to the vet tomorrow.
Avatar f tn t give you much information. You need to know if it is in the normal, pre-diabetes or diabetes range. Also fasting glucose is not the test of choice anymore for diabetes, but the A1C is, and that takes the average of blood sugars for 2-3 months, not just one point in time like a fasting glucose. I encourage you to find out you fasting results and to get an A1C and find that out as well. Never accept a doctor saying it was "fine".
Avatar n tn I have recently been feeling very ill, suffering from bouts of dizziness, headaches and nausea. There is a large case of diabetes in my family. My dad and aunties and uncles all have diabetes. Could this be a sign that I may have it also with the symptoms I have been getting?
Avatar f tn ok dose this sound like diabetes or do i just have like every std in the book and them some other problems? ok so these are the symtoms of diabetes ive had more than a few times but not all on a regular basis.
Avatar n tn I am wondering....for several years I've have had all these crazy symptoms that have come and gone. The past couple of weeks has been the worst though. I frequently get dizzy spells (and I've actually passed out a couple times within the last few years), and I feel drained of energy all the time. I seem to get disoriented alot too, along with some fuzzy vision. And lately, I have had the "fruity breath" that goes along with diabetes.
Avatar m tn Once you mentioned the extreme amount of blood during her final days I knew that this was likely a common urinary tract cancer called Transitional Cell Carcinoma (TCC). TCC is more common in older dogs however can be seen in dogs as young as 2 or 3 years old. It starts of as an infection and then causes urination troubles, pain, weakness, and eventually a lot of bleeding. My condolences to you and your family, I hope this helps a little with closure.
931246 tn?1297902651 Buckley is being booked in to have a full blood work done. The vet isn't sure if it's his liver kidneys or Diabetes. But he is very worried that it could be something bad.
