Common Questions and Answers about Diabetes prevention magazine

Avatar n tn Dear Dr. Rubin: I read in a magazine that 700,000 Americans get a stroke each year, 75% survive, and about 9 out of 10 are left with some sort of permanent neurological impairment thereafter. First, does this sound accurate? Second, what are the biggest risk factors for stroke? Clearly, prevention is the best policy, and even at the age of 26, I want to do everything I can to reduce any risk factors I may have.
Avatar m tn Once you progress for pre-diabetes, why is diabetes not reversible as pre-diabetes is? Does that mean once your diagnosed with diabetes your blood sugar can no longer return to normal and you can't "cure" diabetes? How long does it take to progress? I was a 6.3 the last time I checked which was 2 years ago and I am worried. Please help!
Avatar f tn Lots of aches and pains so would be hard for me to determine where they come from. Do you walk or exercise? I am now reading a book put out by Prevention Magazine called Diabetes 2008 Walking Fit. It is very informative and if you don't walk now you will feel a need to by the time you read it. It is beneficial in so many areas of health.
Avatar n tn Hello Maychild, You've come to the right place to ask about research concerning diabetes ... it causes, potential cures, and causes/cures for complications, too. I'd like to point you to the JDRF website (click the link here or visit www.jdrf.org). From the main page, select the link (near the top of that page) called RESEARCH.

802547 tn?1237850517 Whether for weight loss, or prevention of diabetes or other related medical problems, many women who struggled in their 20’s and 30’s finally find success in their 40’s. For many women at this age, previously insurmountable logistical barriers such as raising preschool age children, or inflexible work schedules, often improve somewhat.
408795 tn?1324939275 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 3.2 million people in the United States have chronic hepatitis C, a viral disease that causes inflammation of the liver that can lead to diminished liver function or liver failure. Most people with hepatitis have no symptoms of the disease until liver damage occurs, which may take several years. Most liver transplants performed in the United States are due to progressive liver disease caused by hepatitis C virus infection.
634733 tn?1316629592 This is the most horrible summary of research I've read -- but what can be expected from the Everyday Health website (which is even worse than Prevention Magazine which should never be looked to for any accurate representation of research). There is also a similar summary of this on WebMD, but again, if you look at the doctor that reviewed and approved the article, she is not a neurologist, much less a neurologist that specializes in MD.
Avatar n tn Memory loss, confusion, high blood sugar and type 2 diabetes are possible side effects of statins - all brand name and generic versions of statin drugs must now carry these warnings on their labels.
168348 tn?1379360675 I read this early this morning and wanted to share. She has thyroid issues and blames that, in part, for gaining weight along with a "fear of exercise" ... If she can do it .. we can do it .. I'm sure Ranae will have lots to share with us on this .. here's the article!!! --------------- Oprah Winfrey says she weighs 200 pounds By CARYN ROUSSEAU – 19 hours ago Associated Press: http://www.google.

Drops in hemoglobin between .5 and 1.0gm are more common with Avandia.
Avatar m tn Coincidentally the June issue of Prevention Magazine came to the same conclusions. They made up a day in the Zone for their article. The meals consisted of 6 egg whites, ½ cantaloupe, 1 kiwifruit, and 3 macadamia nuts for breakfast, Lunch served 3 oz. of skinless white chicken, 1 cup each of steamed asparagus, broccoli, green beans, and 1 tsp of olive oil. Dinner was 3 oz. of turkey breast salad, 4 cups of spinach, 3 cups of cucumber slices, 2 tomatoes, and 1 tsp. of olive oil.
867582 tn?1311630997 The CALDA website might be interesting just because they post good stuff, and have a magazine they will send if you become a member (doesn't cost a lot.) Best wishes to you -- stay strong, and come back and visit with us, okay? and PS about your tests being negative: the tests are notoriously inaccurate, and if you have been infected for a while, it's not uncommon for them to come back negative, because they measure antibodies to Lyme bacteria, not the bacteria themselves.
Avatar n tn I do not have diabetes but I do have metabolic syndrome with a pre-diabetes prevention. The main issue is the fact that my appetite has been greatly reduced. I just am not hungry all the time. Whether it's from the pills or the reduction of insulin into my body --- I like it. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I'm looking good sista'!!!!
254544 tn?1310779332 While medical research and treatment primarily target prevention and viral eradication, there is a lot more effort required to change public perception and attitudes toward Hepatitis C. There are two parts to breaking a disease-related stigma: education and self-respect. By educating communities on Hepatitis C and learning to feel good about yourself (regardless of viral status), Hepatitis C can be removed from the category of socially unacceptable conditions. Why?
1852058 tn?1320162300 Hey Everybody. I took time to read all the various comments here. There seems to be a lot of interest to help and support or to seek help and support, a lot of useful contributions and a lot of confusion also regarding these conditions. Specifically testing and diagnosis. Very justifiable confusion. Some information to help some members understand what they are up against, and why we must all become more focused, knowledgeable, proactive and stronger (as in Mind and Spirit.
Avatar n tn I hurt my lower back Thanksgiving morning doing of all things a prevention magazine exercise tape. I have had so much pain. The orthopedic originally said my back was sprained and sent me to PT. I did seem to do well with PT and felt much better, but on Jan. 18 as I of all things was opening up my blinds I hurt it again. This time the Doc sent me to get a mri which showed a slight herniation in my L5 S1.
Avatar f tn Thanks - disphoric is a scary place to be. I truly think I was in that state for a whole year during the episode of me being on Cymbalta and Adderall-prior to my diagnosis. That was a completely psychotic year for me and ultimately, it took a close friend to insist I talk to my medical doctor who INSISTED strongly (with the threat of hospitalization immediately), that I go back to my pdoc. It's also where my suicide attempt happened.
Avatar n tn (or you would not be here) (at least it should be more important to learn more about oral sex (or whatever you would like to study) than reading the latest gossip magazine) TALK.. about it, not when you are about to have sex or right after, as it (a negative thing) will be associated with the act.. Most mental issues are enhanced by never talking about it, so the mind brews up a world of wars, that comes up every time.
363682 tn?1299492962 Thanks for your interest Vanessa. No ... apart from 'mild' hypertension (for which I am prescribed Perindopril 2mg.), I can't say there are any other noticeable accompanying symptoms. What I have noticed in recent months though is that I am starting to get hot flushes - usually in early evening - and exacerbated by having eaten a hot meal and/or a preceding alcoholic drink.
Avatar n tn I just read the following in the latest Prevention magazine, Nov. 2007. I don't know if will help any of you with stress, but it's worth a try. "To calm down fast, put the tip of your thumb in your mouth, make a seal, blow while puffing out your cheeks, and hold for 5-10 seconds. The increased pressure in your chest cavity stimulates the vagus nerve - a cord that runs from the brain to the abdomen - limiting blood flow to the heart. The instant result: a slower heartbeat.
Avatar n tn A friend of mine gave me an early present and it's a book called, Ultra Prevention. It seems interesting so far and it talks about alternative medicine, which I am willing to try since none of the medications seem to work and the Doctors can't give me an answer. My father just returned from the mayo clinic and they gave him a low residue diet to follow. That has been helping him with his digestive issues. Thank you for your time and information.
