Avatar n tn I decided that a magazine aimed specifically at teen girls with diabetes might be helpful. It is going to be almost like a fashion magazine covering issues like eating disorders to politics but in a way that is interesting and accessable. It will also include less serious issues like creative ways to wear a pump, since I know it can really be a struggle to wear a pump fashionably!

5536886 tn?1455827346 I just heard about a program offered in a local hospital that is for the education of diabetes prevention- it looked really awesome! I'm thinking about checking it out further to see what information they have- do you have a program like this in your area? Have you checked it out and gotten any new information? Was it helpful for you?

The problem area lays with the actual genetic testing as it's still not fully comprehended or in place. Avatar f tn I have read online that cutting out carbs is important for diabetes prevention, but carbs are a large part of my diet and I am pretty skinny already, so whenever I try to cut out carbs or cut down on carbs, I end up getting sick. Maybe it is coincidence, but I feel like it significantly impacts my immune system when I don't eat carbs. What should I do?
973741 tn?1342342773 So, when do you start worrying about diabetes prevention? Is there a certain age? Do you wait until things show on blood work to indicate it's time to start thinking about it? I guess a no brainer is to continually be aware of being a good weight and exercising regularly. But we hear about pre-diabetes. What exactly is that and when is it time for someone to make SURE they are doing what they need to do to prevent?
Avatar f tn It will take a combination of personal decisions and policy changes to turn the diabetes rate around. Making healthy food more accessible and implementing prevention programs will help, she said. One such program is the CDC's new National Diabetes Prevention Program, which aims to provide people with information about diabetes, promote lifestyle changes and reduce disparities between different groups.

Avatar f tn As far as reducing your risk for Type 2 Diabetes in general, whether you ave Hepatitis C or not, a healthy diet (fresh vegetables and fruits, lower fats, no fast food or junk food) and regular exercise are extremely important in Diabetes prevention. Avatar n tn If you are predisposed to developing type 1 diabetes, no amount of exercise will change this. On the other hand, type 2 diabetes is linked with obesity, and exercise would definitely help with the prevention of that type. The hemoglobin A1C measures the average blood sugar level over a 3 month time period. This test is used by diabetics as a tool in keeping their blood glucose readings in control.

Avatar m tn Once you progress for pre-diabetes, why is diabetes not reversible as pre-diabetes is? Avatar f tn I have pre- diabetes (fasting blood sugar 107) and would like to start taking fish oil supplements for health reasons. I've read that fish oil supplements can raise your FBS and shouldn't be taken by diabetics. I would appreciate any thoughts, comments or advice.

Avatar n tn First off, congrats on stopping the beer guzzling and I'm glad you posted. Your glucose levels indicate you are pre-diabetic. If your fasting glucose level is 100 to 125 mg/dL, you have a form of pre-diabetes called impaired fasting glucose (IFG), meaning that you are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes but do not have it yet. A level of 126 mg/dL or above means that you have diabetes.
Avatar n tn A great magazine is the Diabetes Forecast. It addresses type 2 issues too, but many of the letters to the editors are from type 1s. One comment from a type 1 was that when her blood sugar was too high or too low she couldn't make any decisions--which as a mom I try to avoid any big discussions if I know my son's glucose is out of whack. Keep trying to figure it out. You are your best advocate, keep asking those questions.
