15695260 tn?1549593113 Researchers in Germany (however patients were from all over the world in their research) have found that routine blood tests can predict if children with a genetic tie to diabetes will actually develop Type 1 diabetes. They found that if a child has two or more autoantibodies, it's nearly inevitable that they will develop the disease. The research followed participants for 15 years and tested children when they were very young.
161782 tn?1201217932 //www.webmd.com/news/20000613/hepatitis-b-vaccine-linked-to-onset-of-diabetes). What's the point of vaccinating an infant, hours after birth, for a disease that only drug users and sexually promiscuous people are exposed to?
Avatar f tn I recently went to the annual meeting of the Northern California Inland Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) where I learned of Approximately 257 adults who were cured of Type 1 diabetes with the Edmonton Protocol in Canada. This protocol was pioneered by Dr. Shapiro and is the leading center for islet cell transplant. As of yet children are not candidates for the procedure and there are some kinks to be worked out before this can become a procedure for anyone.
Avatar n tn That's fabulous news for all of us with diabetes or caring for folks with it. Competition brings out the best in folks. What a wonderful legacy they're creating!
Avatar n tn I just received a call from my doctor and he told me that I have full blown diabetes and I am six months pregnant, what will do me and my child?
Avatar f tn My three year old son drinks a lot, uses the restroom quite frequently, and says he's really tired a lot here recently. What is a normal blood sugar for someone his age? And could he possibly have diabetes? He has a family history of both type 1 & 2 diabetes on both sides. He isn't losing any weight and plays as normal.
Avatar n tn What are her chances of becoming diabetic? Her doctor said hypoglycemia sometimes precedes diabetes in children. Is is possible to "grow out of" hypoglycemia? If so, what are the chances of this happening?
Avatar f tn Keep your son well hydrated with water but he needs to be evaluated soon. If it is diabetes, he will need to start treatment to avid becoming very ill.If not diabetes but somewhere in between(pre-diabetes) his doctor will make some other recommendations. In the meantime, avoid sodas, sweets, fruit juices and cakes etc .
233488 tn?1310693103 On that note, I could never abandon diabetes research. When you put it in perspective, diabetes kills people (and early), myopia does not. Diabetes is a life full of horrific complications involving the kidneys, heart, nerves and even the eyes. The media paints diabetes as a relatively benign and treatable condition, but that is very, very far from the truth.
Avatar n tn Hello. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Have you had the hypoglycemia test or diabetes test actually done? The symptoms are there, if you haven't done those tests, I'd recommend you get them done right away to ease your concerns. The celiac test can be done as well, but many endocrinologists will recommend to test for diabetes or hypogylcemia first. Good luck.
Avatar m tn At the same time I was informed by one of the nurses that I had diabtes. It rang up 8.5 which, according to my brother who has had diabetes for years, is not that serious. However, I am not one to ignore danger signals so, I will be looking into all the info regarding the problem. Every time my wife looks at me she shakes her head. She says that if there are any more diseases out there I should stay away from them.
Avatar n tn t think a child can be born with diabetes, but I am not 100% sure. It used to be that most children would develop the disease between the ages of 8-11. I don't think that is the case anymore, I believe children are developing the disease younger, but there is no set age when the disease develops.
Avatar n tn Also, your other children have the same chance to develop diabetes as your son. That is both good news and bad news, as your son has been diagnosed, but the rate of diagnosis in kids is 1 in every 500. So the chances are low. But I would still test. There is a national study going on that will test you and your child's siblings for free just for participating (if you qualify). Here's the info: http://www2.diabetestrialnet.
Avatar n tn Well I had my glucose test today.. never fun.. but I survived. Hopefully I won't hear anything bad on it. I'm a little nervous cuz diabetes runs in my family and I'm 27 my body isn't the same as with my DS. Fingers crossed. I also got wonderful news, I had a transvaginal u/s to check cervical length to make sure I'm not at risk for preterm labor (becuz of first pregnancy) and the doc said I am not even remotely at cause for concern.
Avatar n tn Yes, these are all symptoms of type I diabetes in children. My child was wetting the bed, extremely thirsty all the time and was vomiting; his vomiting, we think, was contributed to a stomach virus he had at the time. We took him to the ER due to dehydration -they did a blood chemistry and his blood sugar was 399-they immediately admitted him to ICU and he was put on IV insulin. He's been a diabetic now for 3 years-he's now 9. He's has handled it amazingly well!

Avatar f tn Thanks everyone! Including baby on board we have 4 amazing children. Our 3rd and first son passed away due to an accident at full term birth just over a year ago. Hearing that our oldest had cancer was incredibly scary. So relieved right now! We have never taken the ability to have children for granted but having a child pass away makes it a million times more amazing to have healthy children. Miracles they all are!
Avatar n tn //www.diabetes.org/pre-diabetes/pre-diabetes-symptoms.jsp Please notice that the readings they give are *not* for a random test; they are either for a fasting (FPG - fasting plasma glucose) or an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). Good luck. I hope you get good news, but if your daughter does have diabetes, but sure to check back here with specific questions and/or encouragement and support as you learn about treatments.
Avatar n tn I personally, would not worry about it as you do not have diabetes. Having my children is a far better experience with diabetes than not having had them. This disease would not have stopped me from having my kids, I just looked after myself and had a great medical team.Good luck with whatever you decide.
7062464 tn?1395341888 If you don't get a call within a few days I would say it's safe to say you don't have it
Avatar n tn While I have never heard of headaches being related to any kind of reaction to insulin, I know from personal experience that horrible headaches sometimes accompany low blood sugar levels. While they sometimes go away when the glucose levels return to normal after drinking some juice, I have found that sometimes they stay with me for hours after a low blood sugar spell. So my first question would be: has your son experienced any low blood sugar episodes at all on days when he has headaches?
999780 tn?1263671971 If your son does in fact have Type I diabetes there is a lot of support in the real world for parents with Type 1 children, when he gets older there is even diabetes camp for kids so they can have fun, learn about their condition and meet others like themselves. To treat Type 1 diabetes there are basically two different options, what we call MDIs (multiple daily injections) and insulin pumps which are set to control insulin flow over the day and are worn next to the body.
Avatar m tn Now when i looked through internet about the Ketones i found that it has something to do with Diabetes. I am very scared of this. No one in mine and my wifes family has diabetes and so i feel my son may not have this and that to he is so yuong to have this. When i showed the report to his pediatrician he said it could be due to his fat breakdown because of starvation and the ketones will go away as soon as he starts having his normal diet.
Avatar n tn hello, if your sister's post easting is 269 and her fasting is 139, it would be ideal if your parents can work with her dr to get her numbers a bit lower. Ideally fasting is 70-95 range, and post eating is < 140. However, depending how stable her blood sugar is and if she has lows, her doctor may want to keep her sugars a bit higher than I just posted. Recommend you go to Bernstein Diabetes University on Utube and learn all you can about diabetes and it's management in children.
