Avatar m tn We have a father that has diabetes and has swelling due to sodium issues, grade 4 kidney disease, diverticulitous. Does not like to eat the proper things to control the problem. We tried to switch to low sodium foods but still not doing well. Any suggestions for foods or a websute to help prepare meals and he is so paticular as to what he eats. Does not like any of the foods that are good and were at a loss what to do.

By simple I mean pretty basic stuff that doesn't have a lot of spices or prep time and is inexpensive. I'm a single mom of 5 kids and (i'm disabled so we live off of my Social Security Disability) we get a lot of food boxes which has basic stuff like rice,beans,pasta's,lunchmeat,hamburger and canned foods.

He order a blood test done and i didn't get info till after 2 week only form the hospital saying that I was ok, but doc never called me on results. My mom has diabetes type 2.

It sound like he's in great denial about the diabetes all together and may want to get a good team of doctors, and nutristionist, and othe people together for support. But you have the need to be scared for your friend, i was in denial for almost 7 yrs.

If you are looking for a starch other than potatoes try rice, quinoa (some great recipes on here for that), polenta is awesome with different tomato sauces on top (any corn product is good), kholrabi (looks like a green turnip) - peel and cook and mash like a potato - very good or else try roasting some root vegetables. Avatar n tn Eating a low carb diet is the best option. Eat lean protien sources like fish, chicken, beef. For essential fats eat salmon, olive oil, almonds. the only carbs should come from fruit and vegetables. Drink only water not juice.

I think we will, just for my peace of mind. The calcium he couldn't explain but didn't feel it was super serious, since it's just barely high. He said it could be just one of those things that "normal" to TJ is on the higher end of the range.

The symptoms you gave can occur with either of these things, however neither one need be a death sentence. Diabetes can be managed with diet and either pills or insulin shots and if it's kidney failure, depending upon how advanced it is, it can be put off by years with careful feedings and fluid therapy.

Avatar m tn I am a 51 year old man, diagnosed 28 years ago, have been on insulin for 23 years., commute 100 miles every day to work. Does it mean everything has been OK ? No, far from it. Diabetes has mainly affected my heart so I have had bypass surgery, have a week heart and implanted with a pacemaker. My kidneys, eyes, feet are OK so far. Was I to blame for anything ? Could be. I have not followed instructions from Doctors on diet, exercise and correct dose of insulin religiously.
Avatar f tn My family has an intense history of heart problems (mom has a pace-maker, dad had a heart attack at the age of 32) and diabetes (all but one person on BOTH sizes of my family over the age of 50 has it) and obesity. Let's face it, I'm WAY WAY WAY too young to be as big as I am with THAT kind of history. I've been eating really well and excersicing and have seen ZERO change in weight or size or shape. I'm so ready to just give up!!!! I started thinking; what about weight loss supplements....
