Avatar n tn Dear Steph, I am so sorry about your loss! I think it unlikely that the primary cause of your dog's death was heat stroke. Your dog was exhibiting abnormal symptoms prior to being left outside. She had increased drinking while she was still indoors in the air conditioning. Increased drinking can be signs of over heating of course, but it is also caused by diabetes, hyperadrenocorticism, kidney disease, pyometra, toxin ingestion and more.
Avatar n tn I need to know something, I know Dogs have a high tolerance for pain. Is Buster in pain? Is this disease hurting him? This is my companion and I cannot bear the thought of my Guy in pain. Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated.
4105307 tn?1369535032 We had medications for the treatments of symptoms, but not directly for cushings. There was much more information about dogs than cats. The glucosamine and vitamins we're all that we tried and she gained a little more energy and strength. But the disease continued to make her weak, especially in her rear legs. We ordered steps for the bed that were extra deep and very sturdy to make it easier. Wish I had better answers for you.
675347 tn?1365464245 The vet recommended Paracetamol, as it doesn't interfere with blood clotting, as other pain relief for dogs can. He gave me some tablets. They are big and have "square" edges. Normally Misty is easy to give a tablet to. I wrap it in a piece of brown bread, potato or cheese, throw it at her and it goes right down without touching the sides! Right now she is eating ok again, but delicately, chewing her food (for once!
2186126 tn?1384961026 My question is how do most older dogs with untreated Cushing's begin to fail? I would really like to minimize any suffering in his final days. Right now, I am red-flagging every little twitch and thinking if I knew what to expect, I could calm down a little and hopefully not send any frightened messages to Spartacus. He is currently on Proin to control his urine accidents and that has worked for a few months now. Would just really prefer to look at him with joy rather than fear these days.
Avatar f tn Can tacrolimus eye drops and Cyclosporine ointment cause cancer in dogs? My precious dog, baby and best friend was diagnosed just last week with Transitional Cell Carcinoma in his bladder. It is a rapid growing cancer. I am completely heartbroken and am wondering if there was something I could've done to prevent this. He has been on these two eye medications for about a year. His name is Duke and he is a beautiful tri-colored collie and is a little over 10 years old.
Avatar f tn I am not sure if my son has Diabetes, but it does run in my side of the family. My mother was diagnosed with Diabetes when she was in her 50's, and I have a brother who was diagnosed with it at about the age of 18. My son is 15 years old, has been overweight since about the age of 10, has strong urine, overeats, and his body odor is more than the normal active teen-age boy. He is active in sports, but if the sports season is over- he is not active.
Avatar n tn Oh no. I am so sorry, but it appears your dog is now in definite kidney failure. Once those tissues are damaged, they cannot regenerate. The liver is capable of that, but not kidneys. Your vet appears to be of an old-fashioned school regarding kidney failure. It's not so much the protein that is the problem. Protein does not cause kidney failure, and many studies show that protein doesn't really make things worse.
Avatar f tn Hello. I don't have a lot of information. But my fathers dog is 8 1/2 years old terrier mix Chancho was diagnosed with diabetes today and renal failure. I do not know the numbers of his test, but prior to being diagnosed he was real lathrgic vomiting urinating and popping in the house it was uncontrollable. Today when my father took him to the vet he couldn't walk, vet gave him iv for being dehydrated, anti nausea shot, insulin and antibiotics.
Avatar n tn I would like to suggest that if it is at all possible to bring in a type 1 diabetes nutritional specialist that may help out with information that can help with weight loss. There is another website that I would recommend dealing with this subject. It is www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/dteam/indexweight_2002.htm. This is a well known and very much respected site. None of us here are physicians, but volunteers that can give our life experience and knowledge in dealing with type 1.

82861 tn?1333457511 Animal and human studies have shown that garlic can reduce blood sugar levels. Great for dogs with diabetes. Dogs with arthritis can benefit form garlic. Garlic improves circulation. Garlic promotes production of white blood cells – strengthening the dog’s immune system. Garlic is great for newborn puppies and their mothers. Smaller doses of garlic is fed to the mother and is passed through her milk to the puppies. This helps the puppies fight infections.
Avatar n tn I know people and dogs can develop diabetes. Do you know if hamsters can too? Does his urine smell different or stronger (I wonder about kidney or bladder problems)?
Avatar n tn I did a little research on my own and I too found more information on Cushing's Disease in dogs. I did, however, find some information on Cushing's syndrome on Mayoclinic.com that may be helpful to you. Below is an overview. "Cushing's syndrome is a result of high levels of the hormone cortisol.
Avatar f tn It also reduces insulin resistance in dogs with diabetes. The most active flavonoid in Silymarin is Silybum. Certain Silymarin products are standardized to provide a high concentration of Silybum which offers greater efficacy than typical milk thistle extracts sold as Silymarin. Standardization to 80% is recommended for maximum efficacy. There are no contraindications nor have any potential drug interactions been reported.
Avatar f tn Low carb diet will help her lose weight. It will also reduce her insulin requirements (so she needs to monitor carefully). There are many online links (you will need to search as I'm not allowed to post links here) if you google low carb and diabetes management. For an excellent book look for "diabetes solutions" by Dr. Richard Bernstein. I found that book revolutionised how I think about diabetes and how I manage it for myself (all for the better).
Avatar f tn I have been using RX science diet for diabetic dogs, and fresh ground turkey and fresh ground chicken and boiling fresh string beans. I keep searching for information but seem to get VERY conflicting information. I would make her dog food for her.......I just want to get control of the diabetes and help her renal function.
931217 tn?1283484935 [137] Some authors have suggested that intact females may be at greater risk of diabetes due to the antagonistic effects of ovarian hormones on insulin, and spaying is an important part of regulating diabetes in female dogs.
Avatar f tn With her age in mind, do you think that treatment is what she needs? I love her dearly and we have lost 3 dogs in the last 8 months to congestive heart failure, cancer and kidney failure. When the time came to put them to sleep, they suffered. I do not want her to suffer. Any advice?
Avatar n tn Demodex is called the "eyelash mite" and lives on humans and dogs. My grandson developed a rash on his face from Demodex. My partner and I have had invisible bug, crawley skin sensation for about a month after I got back from Thailand. Checked for fleas, bed bugs, scabies. No rash, bites or sores. Could it be Demodex?

2065896 tn?1373688984 Yep, prednisone (long-term) can cause diabetes both in humans and dogs. One of our dogs (a Toy Fox Terrier) was on prednisone for about 8 months due to health problems including allergies, he developed diabetes, and now is on insulin and a low-carbohydrate diet. (I think it's more likely in dogs to cause diabetes, I was on prednisone at high doses from 2-14 years old and I have some long-term side effects that do remain but I don't have diabetes.) Have you tried adjusting her diet?
Avatar f tn LOL Knowing you have a hereditary predisposition to AI is huge information if you start having symptoms. I think I'd let sleeping dogs lie...
Avatar f tn I've seen older dogs have a change in personality like this. You will have to take back control and discipline her when she nips at you. make her sit then stay for a moment, once she obeys and recognizes your leadership, then reward that. Pick back up with very basic obedience 30 minutes a day and make sure she sticks to a strict schedule when you come home, when you prepare the food and only treat when she obeys a command. you should be able to get her over this.

931217 tn?1283484935 Most coyotes and wolves, for example, are gone by 7 or 8 years old. Pet dogs and cats, however, are now living into their teens quite commonly. Diet is not the only reason for this, but it does not follow that eating raw meat is a positive factor. Most pet animals are not eating raw diets now and live long anyway. Their safer, indoor lives while eating consistent professionally designed commercial diets are one likely reason. That, and better health care than in decades past is another.
Avatar f tn I have an appointment on Thursday to be tested for both hypoglycemia and diabetes but I honestly don't think it will show anything, all the symptoms could be explained through anxiety, and the last time I had blood taken my blood sugar was slightly low (at 62 with 70 being the lowest it should be) so I don't think it could be diabetes. Any information on any of this would be incredibly appreciated, and a little something to maybe ease my mind about the tests because I'm nervous about them. P.S.
