Common Questions and Answers about Diabetes in dogs questions

Avatar f tn Blind dogs can manage very well, but obviously it is better to have the cataracts removed if finance permits. Dogs blind from birth fare better than dogs that become blind later in life. You already have an understanding about not moving furniture, etc., and there are lots f things you can do to improve the quality of life for a blind dog, but ultimately they are still compromised ... and some gs deal with it better than others. You didn't cause this to happen.
1006035 tn?1485575897 Right now there are service dogs provided for people suffering from autism, seizures, diabetes, blindness, deafness, allergies, asthma, depression, and the newest ones of all: endometriosis. I'm sure we'll see even more types of dogs as time goes and people are more aware of what service dogs can do. Maybe we'll even start to see even more service cats? I've heard of them, although they are more rare that dogs.

Avatar f tn I was drinking about 10 diet cokes a day and so I stopped that and thought I was doing good because I bought juice and gatorade, except today I realized I bought diet juices and low cal gatorade and thought about the artificial sweeteners in them (splenda in juice and sucrose in gatorade) and wondered if they are okay in moderation. (like maybe 2 drinks a day) Also, I have very oily skin and have always used a scrub with salacylic acid and then read that it wasn't safe; is that true?
Avatar m tn for the past two weeks he pants 90% of the time? Even when he is in the house for more than two hours. AC is on. Can this be atributed to the diebetes? He has been diebetic for two years now.
1994268 tn?1329466212 It is important to bite the bullet and take him in to the vet for these lumps to be checked. His excessive drinking also has to be addressed. It could be caused by a number of things....kidney insufficiency, or diabetes (which, if caught nice and early respond very well to treatment) Or there may be another cause, but it is best it is discovered quickly so treatment can be started. He will need a full blood-count. And he will need those lumps checked.
8101930 tn?1420001456 I have had hot dogs and my doctors says my baby is very healthy and in the 70 % percent for unborn babies, its fine all in moderation
Avatar n tn She has been sick since Sunday and has been diagnosed with pancreatis, which apparently is a common problem in dogs with Cushings. Currently she is in the hospital on IV fluids and IV antibiotics. We are very fortunate to have a very good local vet and her condition does seem improved, but we always have the option of taking her to University of PA veterinary hospital. They are wonderful compassionate people there and have been life savers for some of our other animals.
Avatar f tn It could be Diabetes, that is usually the first thing to look at with these signs. He could also have a UTI infection, but most male dogs don't get them, but they can get them. If it is diabetes, you would give him a shot twice a day and maybe some pills, if it a UTI, then a round of antibiotis. I hate that as our beloved pets get old they get ill, but so do we. Please let us know what you learn.
Avatar n tn Moke, a normal meal may take four hours to digest totally but starts to digest much sooner so you need insulin in your system when the food starts to digest. The insulin stays in your system (depending on what type) for several hours. You may need to test your blood sugar two hours after eating occasionally and if it is high or low, you can talk to your doctor or diabetes educator about adjusting your insulin.
Avatar n tn Yout vet IS right, high protein diets will harm you cat's kidneys...but the thing I don't get, you cat is diabetic or you're just scared that diets with carbs will cause diabetes?? Because it's not carbs that cause diabetes, it's a really high sugar diet that causes it in animals, commercial food have just the carbs and proteins and fats that your cat need (the good ones, of course there are some brands that can damage pets).
Avatar f tn Did the vet do a glucose tolerance test? In the first stages of diabetes, the most obvious symptom is excessive and almost unquenchable thirst ... and the fact she has been incontinent is also an indicator, as she could have been having a nocturnal hypo or (more likely) hyperglycemic attack. There are many other potential reasons for her symptoms, but diabetes certainly needs urgent investigation as a first priority (and hopefully discounted through blood testing).
1240421 tn?1279547358 I boughts this dog for my 8 year old daughter and she thinks it is cute if she barrley blows in his face but he hates why??? But another questions it may have helped a little i put cream on it but his little pee pee had like scabs on it and some puss why? Like right on the top.
2065896 tn?1373685384 Yep, prednisone (long-term) can cause diabetes both in humans and dogs. One of our dogs (a Toy Fox Terrier) was on prednisone for about 8 months due to health problems including allergies, he developed diabetes, and now is on insulin and a low-carbohydrate diet. (I think it's more likely in dogs to cause diabetes, I was on prednisone at high doses from 2-14 years old and I have some long-term side effects that do remain but I don't have diabetes.) Have you tried adjusting her diet?
Avatar m tn When they are fed sugar on a regular basis (as 90% of food for them - chinchilla food has sugar in it) they develop diabetes and one of first symptoms is cataracts and white eyes. It would worth checking into whether prairie dogs are similar.
306455 tn?1288862071 There was some debate as to whether or not neutering prevented prostate cancer in male dogs, but most studies have shown that there is no appreciable difference in the incidences between neutered and unneutered males, so it's more a matter of personal preference than anything.
931246 tn?1297902651 Buckley is being booked in to have a full blood work done. The vet isn't sure if it's his liver kidneys or Diabetes. But he is very worried that it could be something bad.
Avatar n tn When dogs lose weight this fast I always worry about diabetes. Volunteering at the Humane Society made me see some elderly dogs diabetes' cases and the first thing was that the lost completely appetite. So I would suggest having him checked by the vet so he can run some tests and find the cause immediately.
Avatar n tn I know it might sound crazy to actually want to be considered disabled, but this is what I want. I have missed so much work from diabetes related stuff that I foresee in the very near future my job going up in smoke. I'm almost relieved by this. As it is now, I cannot afford my $245.00 a month in medical expenses. I have insurance where I work but it is shoddy at best.
605458 tn?1539228808 Anyone else experience this. My dog gets insulin once a day. He only needs it once a day for the following reason. His sugar should drop to its lowest 6-8hrs after he gets his insulin. My dog's sugar doesn't drop until 12-14 hrs after, so when we tried him on twice a day, the doses began to overlap and he got hypoglycemic. He does this consistently. He was on NPH, but we have just started him on Vetsulin to see if it will regulate his blood sugar better.
1182699 tn?1297574784 Juvenile diabetes, in some cases, can be associated with gluten and/or casein intolerances. It's possible getting off of gluten (which is in wheat, barley, rye and oats) could solve the problem. I would get shaky, feel faint and have heart racing after eating gluten containing foods - I didn't realize the gluten was causing the problem until I got off of it. When I cheated a little, I would get the same symptoms again. Just a thought.
Avatar f tn My 9 month girl boxer is peeing in her cage. She has no blanket or towel in her cage and I can't figure out why she is doing it. She doesn't do it everyday, but at least 1-2 a week. Can anyone suggest how to stop it or will she stop on her own??...i have two other dogs and I never had a problem like this.
