Common Questions and Answers about Diabetes and wine

diabetes

Avatar m tn The effect of modest wine consumption on NAFLD has not been studied and the recommendation of wine for patients at risk for both diseases is controversial. Despite the potential for liver injury, wine has been shown to ameliorate metabolic risk factors common to NAFLD and CHD. Therefore the aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that modest wine consumption is associated with decreased prevalence of NAFLD.
Avatar m tn A glass of wine won't hurt you. Hopefully if you are pre-diabetes (that is the correct term, there is no such thing as borderline) you are also cutting your carbs, getting exercise and losing weight if needed to slow the progression of your diabetes.
Avatar m tn I get dry mouth and urinate frequently at night. I do not have diabetes according to my labs (A1C and BG). Additionally, I have dry, red allergy eyes. I believe the eye issue is caused by my allergies, although I have read about Sojrens syndrome (I am male, and have no other symptoms aside from dry eyes and mouth). I was wondering if an of this rings a bell for the med help community or its doctors?
Avatar f tn I have diabetes for 10 years and recently got diagnosed with Hypertension. I am not overweight and i got these genetically. Can you please suggest how to lead a healthy long life with these two deadly diseases.

Avatar f tn olive oil, coconut oils, cold pressed nut oils, unprocessed dairy), and avoid transfats (manmade and processed fats), strictly limit fructose from all sources (particularly high fructose corn syrup - but also limit fruits). Carbs should come from plenty of non-starchy vegetables. Avoid processed foods. Hope this can help.
Avatar n tn There is plenty of info out there on allergies to suplites/preservatives etc and for people that have always had wine headache.
Avatar n tn I like to drink a little bit of alcohol, like a glass of wine or maybe two when I am out--but I find that any more and I don't feel like I am as aware as I should be about my diabetes. Alcohol digests differently than food and can do different things to the way your body absorbs insulin.
Avatar n tn Hence, you need to evaluated by a psychiatrist and should be taken against prescription. Wine should not be combined with klonopin as it depresses brain. Short term benzodiazepines will help for sleep. Take care and regards. Take care and regards.
Avatar n tn Ok ive had diabetes for 5 years this coming week and i am 15 years old. Diabetes has deffinently changed the way that i go out with friends and i relieze that i cant do all the things that they do to have fun, like drink alcohol. I know that alcohol and diabetes doesnt mix but im curious to know if marijuana has any other side effects on a person with diabetes or if it is still the same as a non diabetic.
Avatar m tn Hello, I just turned 60 and very recently diagnosed with diabetes. Not sure yet whether it's 1 or 2. Seems to follow the line of 2 for right now. This past week I have been extremely weak and shaky. Almost as if my nerves are jumping. I did have one day where my level hit 304 in the AM but now stay way under 190. In fact, right now my level is 98 and I'm still incredibly weak. Do you have any idea as to what can be causing this?
Avatar n tn this red wine thing has been going on for many years with different health benefits. lol, all i can picture is going to my hep doc and he un-corks a btl of red wine and we sip it while i ask him questions. all along telling me it is like medicine.
Avatar f tn I used to do all 3 in excess many years ago. I drank two strong mixed drinks, daily and an occasional glass of wine, too. I was toking and smoking at one point in my life. But, that's all in my past. I have smoked in appprox. 11 years and only had 1 glass of wine in the past 11 years(not on treatment) and haven't toked in 20 years. I really have gotten used to having that part of my life as history and this part of my life as a new chapter.
Avatar n tn I have been wondering if I could have diabetes for a while. I have lower back pain and the pain runs down my leg and my toes often go to sleep. I also drink a lot of liquid and urinate a lot. I get faint when I stand up especially when I'm hot, although it hasn't happened for a while. Sometimes my fingers/hands get tingly and shake a little. I have been quite moody although I always have been, and can be very forgetful. Maybe it is just stress?
1549468 tn?1345472336 I am so glad I found a new PCP that I like. Yesterday I woke up feeling very weak and dizzy, which I feel was caused from not having a snack before bed tha night before...guess I won't do that again. This morning I had my oldest daughter, Alainna, get me some mandarin oranges before I even got out of bed. Believe it or not, but I ate the whole can. All that matters though, is that I feel better.
Avatar n tn the arrival of a baby is a huge stress and will add to the challenges of controlling and managing your diabetes. Plus, you'll want the energy, stamina, and general good health to be able to enjoy and participate in your baby's life that only getting your health and habits under control will provide.
Avatar n tn I got sick of spending money i didn't have on useless tests, so I stopped going to the dr. So now, I have tingling in my legs, and my arms...and sometimes my arms get heavy to where I can't lift them..and the tingling is very painful. My neurologist and my doctor couldn't find anything wrong. First my dr tried to tell me i was anorexic, and by my weight, you can tell that I'm not. I eat constantly..despite the fact that I have nausea, I have gained weight, about 5 lbs.
Avatar n tn But in the last year, when I drink beer or wine, I have mild hypoglycemias in the next 2 hours, and hyperglycemias and insulin resistance for the next 2 days! I even started having the dawn fenomenon much more frequently than before. I also realized that when I eat a lot in one day, I develop insulin resistance and dawn fenomenon for the following week, unless I exercise vigorously (3-4 joggs/week) or reduce insulin dosage and food intake for one or two days.
Avatar n tn He seems to crave all types of liquor and wine. Are there any guildlines for drinking with diabetes? It is my understanding that it should not be done at all. Since we cannot be with him what can I do to make him understand the seriousness of drinking/diabetes. He is already on an ace-inhibitor for some kidney problems. My second question would be what type of damage does alchoal do to type 1 diabetes? I am very concerned about him. He has also gained a lot of weight at college.
Avatar n tn I struggle with palpitations - an intense pounding in my chest and a rise in pulse AFTER eating. Yes, I've had a full cardiac workup and been told that the heart is not the cause. Heart monitors confirmed that my pulse rises anywhere from 30 min. to a couple of hours after eating and can stay there for hours, but the monitors also show that the palps are the symptom of something else and not caused by the heart.
Avatar f tn Confused about cholesterol? Unsure which fats are good and which are bad? Wondering if you can eat eggs? Well, wonder no more. We’ll set the record straight on some of the “facts” and “fictions” about cholesterol and eating for a healthy heart. 1. Cholesterol is bad for your body. FICTION. Our bodies need cholesterol to help build cells, hormones and bile acids. It also helps our nerves work properly. The liver makes all the cholesterol we need.
Avatar n tn i am diabetic done angeoplqst on 11th may 2010 is it advisible to take red wine This discussion is related to Effects of alcohol on angioplasty patients.

Avatar n tn He has some of the signs of diabetes Thirst, urination, moody, and weight loss. I spoke to the doctor about this in August of 2006 so we started to monitor him. This month he lost about 6 lbs. So I started checking his blood sugar a lot. His fasting rage was 98 to 193. His range before meals was anywhere from 74 to as high as 193. I also took his levels sometimes while sleeping and had one as low as 69 and as one as high as 153.
Avatar f tn My blood glucose levels were lower than they've ever been during this period and since as I've tried to eat moderately and exercise vigorously. Two weeks is the maximum that one can stay on Scarsdale as it creates a ketosis that can get out of hand if left unchecked. Not only is my blood glucose lower but I've not had any symptoms of angina such as that burning/grinding sensation in the chest requiring a nitroglycerin tablet.

Avatar n tn I have a couple of adult friends who are type 1s and were as teens. They now can drink a beer or two or glass or wine or two with meals, in a slow way, but of course teens don't usually drink that way (I know-- I was a teenage drinker). For now, I would say absolutely avoid all alcohol-- really, it can be a life-or-death thing while your body is dealing with this-- but don't despair that you'll never be able to drink again. You might be able to eventually. 2.
