Common Questions and Answers about Diabetes and pregnancy guidelines

172023 tn?1334675884 Babies born large can suffer stuck shoulders and broken collar bones, experts say, and are prone to overweight or obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life. And an overly large newborn poses risks for the mother at delivery, including vaginal tearing, bleeding and often the need for a cesarean section. Infants born overweight also face higher odds for health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. Children born prematurely can suffer from impaired mental and physical development.
Avatar n tn If you do develop gestational diabetes however, don't panic, but do work with your doctor to make sure you're taking good care of yourself and follow the guidelines given. If you'd like more information about gestational diabetes please refer to the following ADA website: http://www.diabetes.org/gestational-diabetes.jsp Good luck and take care!
Avatar f tn I'm diabetic before pregnancy and on insulin following a diet as well as excercise. I had questioned the doctor about the earliest they would induce she said if I ever got out of control levels she'd rather hospitalized me up to 39 weeks to get sugars in control Rather then a possible baby in nicu for development problems.
231441 tn?1333896366 Better to be inconvenienced now, but have a healthy baby! This is still only about 8 weeks, and the risk for overt diabetes climbs as the pregnancy progresses. So let's see. At least we're starting early. Fasting this morning was 105. The numbers go higher when I sleep in (and go for longer than usual without eating) - and I was feeling too unwell to eat last night I just got home and crashed... Feeling better today. Have a great day all.
Avatar m tn Fiber plays a key role in the report, since it has been shown to help prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Given how rich in fiber fruits, vegetables, and grains are, we're excited to see that a plant-based diet could be getting unprecedented attention as a healthy way to boost your fiber. A nod towards plant-based eating isn't the only twist in this report. They also say that dietary cholesterol isn't the threat people once thought it was.
Avatar f tn I think the thing that worries me most during pregnancy is gestational diabetes because it can cause some pretty serious complications, especially for the birth. So my question is - is there anything I can be doing to help prevent GD? A certain diet? Or is this something that just develops regardless of what you do? I never had it my other pregnancies but my last pregnancy I was close to the cutoff. My midwives' cutoff is lower than most doctors' cutoffs, too, which is kind of frustrating.
183933 tn?1290220562 She usually does get gestational diabetes when she is nearing the end of her second trimester. She is now 7 1/2 weeks pregnant and is already getting diabetes. It started around 5 1/2 weeks. Around that time she tested her blood sugar levels at home and her numbers were around 280. I know for about a week they were pretty high, centering around that number. Now she is 7 1/2 weeks along and her numbers are around 125. That is all controlled from her diet.

1285850 tn?1291780035 I was wondering if anyone has or had gestational diabetes? I took the 1h glucose test and came back with high levels. I have to go on Monday to do additional testing at a diabetes clinic. What should I expect? What can happen to my baby? If I cut the sugars and eat right will I be able to help the baby or is it too late? All I knew about this before is that the baby can be large (which I do not want) or premature. has anyone had gestational diabetes and had a normal baby?
Avatar m tn If your wife was my patient, and if she had any significant risk factors for diabetes, I would check a blood sugar early in pregnancy and then at about 24-28 weeks as you have read. Most of the research done on patients with gestational diabetes show no difference in outcomes for mothers and babies with gdm as compared to mothers with gdm. So IF your wife had GDM it is unlikely that testing a few weeks late is going to effect the outcome of her pregnancy in any significant way.
Avatar f tn And if your dietician/dr are being too hard with the diet and guidelines tell them to be more helpful rather than demanding!
Avatar f tn There are guides to help women have a safe and healthy pregnancy, and if possible, they should be followed. They are there for a reason. I'm glad that it was easy for you to get back to a healthy and good weight, and that you didn't have any weight related complications. But many women are not as lucky as you, and it is a disservice to tell them to gain all the weight they want.

3058480 tn?1346441444 So i had to do the test where you drink that nasty drink that makes your blood sugar go up and they draw your blood and my results come back high and its a possibility i could have gestational diabetes and i dont even know what that is and i have to go in next week for more testing and to be honest im pretty scared and worried..
Avatar f tn Hi, I'm 33w tomorrow and I'm diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. I did pretty well on diet, but kept failing my before breakfast morning blood sugar test. Then occassionally I would fail my bloodsugar test after dinner (not often, but it did happen). So I started on insulin two weeks ago, it really works beautifully. Gestational Diabetes has many side-effects, and severe hunger is one. Which I have. I have never been hungry like this before..

Avatar m tn doctors dont know everything because a few of them told me i would never conceive naturally and they stated that they didn't even think fertility treatments would work for me due to my size but God still blessed hubby and i naturally with no aids of assisting at all so just take good care of you and baby until they see the baby debut on the ultrasound despite the textbook guidelines and outcome possibilities they rely on. Congrats in advance and stay positive.

She was always hungry but would tell me that the diet is not that bad and she was able to go with. She was fine. You will be fine too!
Avatar n tn I went to the doctor on Dec.1,2003 and they gave me both a urine and blood pregnancy test that came back negative.
