Common Questions and Answers about Deviated septum surgery change shape of nose

Avatar n tn I had surgery to straighten a deviated septum, straighten the nose, and open it up some, but the turbinates were apparently left intact - this at age 17. Had the runny nose and congestion before. That was improved afterward and I had 5 or so good years, then the opposite problem of tooo-dry nose-sinuses started to set in and it's been beating me up for about 25 years now.
1329703 tn?1275158081 I have a deviated septum that was found when my allergy shots started working but I still couldn't breathe through my nose. I also have mild sinus issues with them clogging and a mild infection (normally my immune system gets it under control within a week or so). I have the surgery in a couple of weeks so I can't comment on the long term affects yet but I'm hopeful it will help!
4556201 tn?1356445652 Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. In Elementary school, I fractured my nose pretty bad. Then in my early teens, I realized I had a 'bump' on the bridge, & a deviated septum. The 'bump' is caused by 2 super sharp bones sticking out. (It's so extreme/sharp that family & friends I let touch it were *all* really shocked by it, & assured me it was*not* normal.

Avatar n tn I know surgery is an option for the deviated septum. But will my nose ever not hurt again??? It also causes so much pressure in my ears that it has aggravated my TMJ. Sure wish I knew then what I know now...
538090 tn?1213808112 My husband had surgery for his deviated septum along with turbine reduction. It seems he broke his nose in highschool, while playing basketball, and didn't realize it. The tissue grew too much inside his nose and started to cause him to have several sinus infections over the years. The congestion your are getting may be due to the affected tissue swelling because of your flu or bronchitis. The surgery will help clear your breathing passage and give you some relief.
Avatar f tn The headaches were also on the left side due to pressure from the clogged nostril. He told me I had a deviated septum. I scheduled surgery that day because he said he could fix my problem and make it easier to breathe. Well he did make it easier to breathe out of the clogged side, but he moved the septum too far and now I cannot breathe out of what was my "good" side. My headaches are worse than they were before the surgery.
Avatar f tn t want to have to keep getting surgery to correct my deviated septum. Is there any other options (besides nose sprays)?
Avatar m tn I was told to go back for a CT scan and yesterday I was shocked to be told that I have a deviated septum (S shape), either a nasal cyst or polyp, and one turbinate significantly larger than the other. The ENT specialist has recommended an "all in one" surgery to remove my polyp/cist, reduce my turbinate and straighten my septum. He figures the reason for my total lack of smell is due to my nose being so blocked that nothing can get to my smelling glands/receptors.
1452978 tn?1285110262 I constantly feel pressure around the bridge of my nose. And get sinus headaches alot. Has anyone had the sinus surgery and it helped the dizziness, off balance, and lightheaded feeling. I am have a deviated septum that is being correct. I am nervous I have never had surgery before but I am praying this takes care of the issues. Could someone please share their experiences with me, my surgery is Thursday. Thanks so much!
Avatar f tn s of sinus infection. But it souns like the severe deviated septum is the cause of this, not primarily bacterial. Will this probably mean surgery? Websites make it sound simple, out-pt treatment. Would like to have the real scoop from real people who have had this done. I'm not looking to beautify my nose, just be able to breath thru it, not snore, and not constantly blowing it. I would appreciate any input. Thank you for your help.
Avatar m tn year 2001 When i started working, i had my physical/medical exam everything went OK. since medical exams doesnt include xrays/ctscan of the head the deviated septum was not detected, so i was unaware that something in me was wrong. year 2004 when i visited a dentist to extract my tooth, the dentist notice that my jaw is locking and my 2 front upper teeth is not align in the midline of my nose, so i was advised to have dental braces, due to finances i didnt bother to have it.
Avatar n tn Your son could continue to have some swelling of the lining of his nose. Your son’s pediatrician can easily look into the nose and tell if this is the cause of the stuffiness.
Avatar f tn The only reasons to fix your deviated septum would be 1) you are finding it difficult to breathe through your nose 2) you have sleep apnea and fixing your septum may help with CPAP compliance 3) you are having severe, difficult to treat nosebleeds 4) you are looking for cosmetic rhinoplasty (of which a septoplasty may be a part). It is shameful if anyone is trying to frighten you into having this surgery.
Avatar f tn Hey all, I'm getting slightly concerned about a lump on my nose. It's on the right side along the bridge. It's a few mm in size, but obviously on the nose it stands out a bit. Background information. I'm 27, Male, ex smoker. I have chronic sinusitis and a deviated septum, these will be operated on within the next couple of months so hopefully I'll be able to breathe again.
Avatar m tn I have noticed that the sit of my nose where my deviated septum had been seems to still be significantly inflamed and that the generalized area around where the maxillary sinus would be hurts as well. Perhaps the most annoying, is the fact that my upper left molars kill. is this likely just residual inflammation from the surgery itself? i do know there was a good amount of infection in the left maxillary prior to my surgery, so wondering if this is just aggravated by the surgery.
Avatar f tn I had the worst sinus and ear infection of my life. I had a lot of pain and nosebleeds along with thick colored nasal mucus and lasted for a month and a half. I would wake up with hard like scabs that i did pick off. it even spread to my ears to the point that I had trouble hearing.I eventually went get antibiotics and cleared up.
Avatar n tn With the Sinuse Surgery the doctor would be able to correct this problem along with a good clean out of all sinus cavities. I believe you would a great amount of releif after a sinus surgery. I know I was amazed at how well I could breath and that I didn't have chronic sinus pain all day.
Avatar f tn I hope the title doesn't seem too silly, but yes, I haven't been able to find a slow breathing technique that works for me in the last 2 years. I can't breathe through my nose really well, deviated septum. ENT's told me to fix my anxiety before contemplating any surgery. And then I clench because I have TMJ, that is a work in progress. I breathe abdominally but I constantly feel jammed up around the neck and mouth.
Avatar f tn i previously had a deviated septum unrelated to cocaine and it never bothered me. now it does, i mouth breathe and have pressure in my nose/sinus, the shape of my nose has changed, there seem to be shadows on the sides and it seems flattened. i am obviously very scared of nasal collapse. i have been to see my gp who referred me to an ent specialist. they said there was no damage other than a deviated septum. this was a few moths ago and i have used since, now i think there is damage.
Avatar f tn Yes. I had the septoplasty in 2005. The deviated septum came back on the same side. I am scheduled for a revision in September 2008. There was no accident that caused it. It just noticed in my 20s. Still trying to get even air flow.
Avatar f tn Septoplasty for deviated septum and coblation of the turbinates My teenage son had this as outpatient surgery two days ago. Day one was pretty rough, so keep current on those painkillers. His doctor's advice; use bags of frozen peas instead of ice packs - they mold to the face better. The cold really helps. He also told me to get an over the counter spray called "simply saline" to spray right in the nose to keep it moist.
Avatar n tn So I went to the ENT today and had them stick that scope up my nose and apparently I have a pretty bad deviated septum ... he gave me a script for a nasal spray and an antibiotic but I'm not sure what the antibiotic is for, I don't like taking antibiotics if I don't have to so I'm hesitant to take that. He mentioned surgery but for the possible future ... I'm hoping the nasal spray will help the allergies and the post nasal drip ...
Avatar m tn Possible Deviated Septum? What can i do about it, im 17 nearly 18, im guessing it won't change much? I don't want a perfect nose, but i have an indent look at the end of my nose which leads me to lose alot of confidence and everywhere i go it's on my mind. It's like a pinch look, not sure if that makes sense but yeah really bothers me, and looks different from angles.
Avatar f tn Hey, I did figure out what it was. It was a deviated septum of all things. I couldn't really tell because the other side of my septum hardly had any indent. Hope your appointment goes well.
